Oh, you won't be able to do anything of the sort, Siegfried. The only place you and your little cyclops girlfriend are going is death row for the murder of Janus Harvey. And I know when they seat you down in that chair, just before they flick the switch... you will remember this moment and weep in rage and anger. And the thought thrills me more than anything in my life.
~ Captain Renard to Dr. Siegfried.

Adel Renard is the main antagonist of Operation: Turnabout. He is the Security Captain of the Peacemakers base in Los Angeles. In his early appearances in the case, he is shown as a competent leader that always does his job to the best of his capabilities. However, beneath the surface lies a cruel and sadistic war criminal that committed acts against humanity along with corruption for the sake of thrill.

History[]

Four years before Operation: Turnabout, Renard was an intelligence officer for the military who was stationed in Aresia which was undergoing a civil war. At one point he made contacts with an insurgent group during his stay who were willing to "pay" him for Helios-6 explosives. Renard knew full well the payment was going to be useless to him as the currency had already been discontinued, but he decided to go along with the plan and backstab them first because he wanted to challenge himself. He negotiated with Captain Janus Harvey to deliver the explosives under the pretense that it was for the military in exchange for payment. After that was done, he gave the explosives without the detonators in order to betray the insurgent group. Before they even had the chance to rat him out, he notified the police and firing squad to get them all executed.

Curious on how far he can psychologically torture Captain Harvey, who was himself an amoral man, he pressed on further. He told Captain Harvey about what really happened with the explosives and made him panic while giving him no evidence of his own involvement. He convinced Captain Harvey to kill his subordinates using the Helios-6 bombs as it was his only way out of being arrested for the incident due to his already horrendous reputation. Pressing on even further he made sure he was the lead investigator of the Helios-6 incident in order to cover up his scheme. He also went to Harvey and blackmailed him with constant payment in exchange for keeping him away from legal harm.

Ever since then, he joined the Peace Corps as the Captain of Security in order to observe his victims and see Harvey suffer for his own entertainment. Unfortunately for Renard, after 4 years the Allied Nations wanted the investigation into the Helios-6 incident to be resolved as quickly as possible. The Allied Nations would promote Captain Harvey into a Major in exchange for a confession. This would grant Captain Harvey legal immunity to the incident which would mean he would no longer be under Captain Renard's thumb. Knowing Captain Harvey could expose the truth of the incident, he snuck into his office at 12:11 PM using his keycard. He spiked one of his spirit drinks with old heart medicine which would slowly kill him within 15 minutes. After being alerted of Mike November's arrival to meet with Captain Harvey via the doorbell, he stepped out and hid in one of the cardboard boxes outside the office. Unfortunately for his plan, when Mike November left, he pulled down the kill switch which would turn off the power in the office, locking the door. Captain Renard needed to get back in because he had yet to delete his own entry from the record, so he bided his time for 10 minutes before the power was turned back on again before entering. Upon entering, Captain Harvey was going to receive from Dr. Siegfried to check on Private November, but Captain Renard silenced him with a chop to the neck before he could reach the phone. With Captain Harvey doomed to die, he used Harvey's finger to access the logs and delete his entry. After murdering Captain Harvey, he planted a fake suicide note to throw the investigation and went back to his own office and unexpectedly heard the alarms go off which went on for 10 minutes. After the murder, he was informed by the police that a bomb went off in Captain Harvey's office.

The protagonists Phoenix Wright and Maya Fey first meet Captain Renard when he notices that Sergeant Tenant was "disciplining" the two after Maya Fey attempted to scale the fence. He notes that the Sergeant's methods for disciplining were unnecessary and that he himself is to blame as he was not guarding his post properly. After ordering the Sergeant to night patrol for two weeks in the forest, he lets the two in after showing him the letter of request. He leads them both to Lieutenant Victoria in order for them to be issued keycards for their investigation. After the first trial, he orders the media to stay away or else they will be arrested. After the announcement, he greets and questions the two on how the trial hasn't ended yet due to the evidence stacked against Private November. He doesn't give the two a lot of information into Captain Harvey as his current occupation status allows him to feign ignorance on the main chain of command's social lifestyle. It's also revealed that he wasn't watching the trial as "it doesn't concern him". On the day after the second trial, he is brought to the front entrance yet again after Maya uses the intercom to embarrass Sergeant Tenant for slacking off from the post. He scolds the Sergeant for refusing to follow orders again while Phoenix and Maya snuck into his office to return a classified document. When they returned, he asked for the status of the trial and after they mentioned that there were two "suicides notes" he realized that the attempted murder with the bomb was motivated by the Helios-6 incident and decided to watch the trial for potential amusement. After the conversation was over, he planned to demote the Sergeant. Maya berated him for being too harsh on Sergeant Tenant, but he refused to comply and left them.

During the trial, he watched Dr. Siegfried testify and Lieutenant Victoria along with him confessing to "the murder". He also watched Lieutenant Victoria "confessing" to being the culprit of the Helios-6 incident and found it humorous. After Phoenix Wright puts him on the stand for being the culprit behind Captain Harvey's murder, he pleaded the fifth. When Phoenix Wright threatened that he could expose him using the evidence he has without his own defense resulting in a pathetic loss, he decided to take on the challenge and testify. When it came time to expose his connection to the victim, he threatened Phoenix Wright with a felony charge for possessing a "classified document". After Phoenix Wright exposed the classified status for being outdated, he continued to go along with the trial. After his forgery into the investigation was exposed, Captain Renard gleefully admitted to his heinous actions regarding the incident 4 years ago along with the subsequent blackmailing of the victim knowing full well the court has no authority to arrest him for his crimes. He taunts the victims saying how funny it was for Victoria to think she was the true culprit behind the incident and how easy it was to manipulate Captain Harvey into committing heinous acts against his own subordinates. He saw people with emotional weakness as people who were beneath him and deserving to suffer against his wrath. After he was about to walk out the doors and planning on hiding from the Internation Allied Nations to escape justice, Franziska Von Karma ordered him to stay and finish his testimony on the victim's murder or else he would be held in contempt due to his heinous insults. After Phoenix is able to place him at the scene of the crime due to the suicide note's handwriting analysis matching his, he makes one final move. He decides to threaten the lives of everyone in the courtroom with a Helios-6 Bomb. After Phoenix Wright calls the bluff proves that the bomb was a fake, Captain Renard is left with no more moves left. He screams, faints, and his arrested for the murder. After his arrest, he was brought to the International Allied Nations and was tried. He was convicted and ultimately incarcerated for life without parole. During his years in prison, other potential actions during his time as Captain and Intelligence Officer were being investigated by the Allied Nations.

Personality[]

Adel Renard is an intelligent man who knows how to manipulate other people into getting what he wants. He's nothing but a cruel, sadistic, and corrupt person who plays a game of causing the most damage to others. He treats other people's lives as chess pieces and his cruel acts as a game of chess for how long he can commit them without arrest. He knows the law well and knows how to pull the right strings to escape justice. He laughs and taunts people when they're powerless against him, having a sick sense of humor and even dwelling over their misery. Renard's only cowardly trait is when he's completely cornered and uses a fake weapon to threaten the lives of everyone in the courtroom.

Trivia[]

  • Many viewers suspected him of being the culprit before the final part was released. However, few people predicted how heinous of a villain he truly was.
  • He is one of the few Ace Attorney antagonists in any fanon who made a move to resist arrest even after their guilt was conclusively proven.
  • The last name Renard is a reference to a fox, a creature stereotypically portrayed as sly and untrustworthy, a fitting name for the final villain of a case. Ironically, Adel means just and fair, something he is the anthesis of.
