Akane Taira is one of the two secondary antagonists (alongside Alter Ego Monokuma) of the Korean Danganronpa fangame Danganronpa Another, she's one of the Ultimate Despair External Agents and a servant of Utsuro.

Just like Utsuro, she starts off as a supporting character during chapters 1-5 until she's revealed to be one of the two masterminds behind the Killing Game, having erased her memories beforehand to act like an innocent participant.

Personality[]

Amnesiac[]

Just like Utsuro, Akane was significantly more heroic in her amnesiac state. She was an optimistic and friendly girl who was always working hard to find a way to escape the Killing Game with her friends.

Despite being friendly most of the time, she would sometimes lose her temper easily, especially when dealing with people like Tsurugi Kinjo.

After Ayame Hatano died to save her, Akane became very depressed because she believed she was at fault for Ayame's death and even started to grow suicidal tendencies. Though she eventually got over it.

Ultimate Despair[]

Akane Taira was completely obsessed with Utsuro, she loved and never held any grudge against him. She obeys and does anything Utsuro orders her to do with a few exceptions and she's completely okay with doing plenty of vile actions as long as it benefits Utsuro.

After recovering her memories as an Ultimate Despair External Agent, she became very playful, often making fun of the survivors and laughing whenever they found out about a secret. She never cared if they felt anger or annoyance towards her.

For some reason she also genuinely cared for the last survivors of the Killing Game, even refusing to kill them despite being ordered by Utsuro.

Biography[]

Background[]

Akane Taira was one of the many people who had a miserable life but were saved by Utsuro's Divine Luck, and ever since then she became a servant of Utsuro. Presumably because of the same Divine Luck, Akane Taira became a professional maid and was invited to join Hope's Peak as the "Ultimate Maid".

At some point Utsuro and Akane Taira met Junko Enoshima and ever since then, they became members of the Ultimate Despair and decided to help Junko Enoshima by setting up a Killing Game as an experiment for Junko's future Killing Game. Akane Taira, along with Utsuro disguised as the "Yuki Maeda", joined Hope's Peak and spent three months studying there waiting for the Tragedy to happen. During that time, Akane and Utsuro pretended to not be friends in order to avoid suspicion.

Since Utsuro was disguised as Yuki Maeda, he ordered Akane to attack the real Yuki Maeda. Akane then invaded Yuki's house, killed his parents while filming it, and then imprisoned Yuki somewhere.

Three months later, the Tragedy happened, several Monokumas started attacking the city killing plenty of people. Yamato Kisaragi then rescued all 15 students, including Akane Taira and Utsuro, and brought them to the Kisaragi Foundation to protect them. As part of their plans, Utsuro brought Monokumas inside the foundation and had them kill all the executives while knocking out the other students. Akane and Utsuro then started preparing for the Killing Game.

The monokumas modified the Kisaragi Foundation in order to make it look like Hope's Peak. Utsuro erased the other students' memories to make them think they had just entered Hope's Peak. He also erased Akane's and his own memories to make them think they were normal Hope's Peak students just like the others. He also made it so that Akane Taira would recover her memories upon hearing the words "Ultimate Despair", and that himself would recover his memories after finding out he's the real Mastermind.

Utsuro trusted his Divine Luck so that he and Akane Taira would survive the Killing Game and with that, Monokuma was put into action and the Killing Game began.

Chapters 1-4[]

Since her memories were erased, Akane Taira acted like a normal Hope's Peak student. Just like all the others, she was against the Killing Game and wanted to escape with the others. Akane Taira and "Yuki Maeda" became close friends during the game despite their memories of being allies having been erased.

Akane Taira had a major role in Chapter 2 when Kizuna Tomori tried to kill her, but Akane escaped and accidentally stabbed Kizuna in the process. Ayame saw everything and, in order to prevent Akane from becoming the culprit and getting executed, she picked up the knife and stabbed Kizuna, becoming the real culprit of the case.

Ayame was later found out in the class trial and revealed her reasoning behind the murder, she was then executed due to the class trial rules. Akane Taira became depressed ever since then, believing that Kizuna and Ayame died because of her fault. She even tried to kill herself at some point.

Akane Taira continued surviving as an amnesiac supporting character without ever raising any suspicions.

Chapter 5[]

At some point Monokuma introduced a new "transfer student" named Yamato Kisaragi, and a few days later he was mysteriously murdered. While Monokuma was the real killer, having detonated the bomb inside him, Monokuma made it look like Mikako Kurokawa was the real killer.

During the class trial Akane had an important role as she defended Yuki Maeda by providing an alibi that proves he couldn't have killed Yamato, and all suspicion turned back to Mikako again.

A few moments later, Mikako was falsely found out as the "culprit" as Monokuma planned. Since she was about to die anyways, she spent her last moments leaking as much information as possible. In her last words, she told the participants that the Mastermind was among them, most likely referring to "Yuki Maeda" and Akane Taira.

When the power went out, Tsurugi Kinjo appeared, having finally woken up from his coma, and told everyone to stay away from Akane, claiming she's the Mastermind. At first Akane was confused but then Tsurugi said the words "Ultimate Despair". That made Akane Taira shake and scream uncontrollably as she slowly regained her memories.

Everyone was surprised at Akane as she revealed her true identity as a member of the Ultimate Despair. After jokingly saying she's gonna kill them and later denying it, Akane tells everyone to get ready as the "grand finale" of the Killing Game is going to come soon.

Chapter 6[]

Yuki Maeda wakes up on his bed only to realise that Akane was sleeping with him. After a while she leaves his room at an inhuman speed.

Later she appears at the dinner desk where everyone meets and announces the final class trial, where the participants will have to investigate and find out about every secret about the Killing Game in order to win and escape. For the investigation, she purposely left several clues and unlocked every door in the school. In reality, the real purpose of the class trial was to make Yuki Maeda recover his memories as Utsuro.

When confronted by Yuki, she revealed that the real culprit who killed Yamato and framed Mikako for it was Monokuma.

Class trial[]

The class trial was a success, Yuki Maeda with the help of the others were able to uncover almost all of the secrets behind the game. Everytime they would explain their theory and get it right, Akane would excitedly confirm it. As the class trial progressed, Yuki's headache kept getting worse, as his real memories were reacting to all the information.

Later, Akane revealed that in reality there were two masterminds who were responsible for setting up the Killing Game, and that the main one was still amnesiac and unaware about it. The participants started talking about their backstories as alibis that they couldn't be the Mastermind, and Yuki realised that he had none, he couldn't even remember the schools he went to or even his own mother's name. At that point, Yuki Maeda realised that he was the mastermind.

After a lot of headaches, Utsuro finally recovered all of his memories and went back to his original, emotionless and evil personality. The other participants tried to make Utsuro go back to normal but it was useless. Utsuro then made Tsurugi, Rei and Teruya fall into despair one by one by revealing the harsh truth about what happened to their relatives.

Post-trial[]

As the Killing Game had finally ended and all remaining participants had fallen into despair, Utsuro ordered Akane Taira to kill them, but she refused, she tried to talk him out of killing them although it was useless. Utsuro then ordered Monokuma to kill Akane, but suddenly Alter Ego Kisaragi appeared in the monitor and stopped the Monokumas from working. Kisaragi also managed to give the participants hope again, removing their despairful state.

The remaining students were ready to attack Utsuro when suddenly a Monokuma tried to kill Rei. Akane then threw herself in front of Rei, getting attacked and heavily injured instead. Monokuma then activated his self-destruction, making it so that the entire island would collapse and drown in 15 minutes.

Guided by Alter Ego Kisaragi, the three remaining participants were able to escape with a helicopter, but Utsuro decided to stay with the injured Akane. The two had a short conversation during their final moments, with Akane making a few theories about his actions. Akane then told Utsuro that he should try to survive, with Utsuro secretly refusing and accepting his fate.

When the island finally collapsed, Utsuro passed down his Divine Luck to Akane, allowing her to survive unlike him who drowned to death.

Super Danganronpa Another 2[]

Throughout a good portion of the story, Sora believed herself to be Akane Taira after losing her memories, especially after activating her code and regaining Akane’s memories. In reality, those memories were fake and Sora was, in reality, a virtual program based on Akane.

The real Akane Taira managed to survive the island collapsing and ended up in a hospital. Since she was an important part of Mikado Sannoji’s plan, he had Syobai kidnap and connect Akane to the Neo World Program. They made it so that, while the rest of Akane’s body would be working, her mind was dead. This was because Mikado wanted to possess Akane’s body after stealing the Divine Luck.

However, his plan backfired and the one who actually possessed Akane’s body was the real Yuki Maeda. Ever since then, Yuki continued living with her body and was also blessed with Divine Luck.
