Doctor Alexander "Alex" J. Mercer is the titular main antagonist of the DEATH BATTLE episode "Cole MacGrath VS Alex Mercer." He is the Blacklight Virus bent on taking over the world with his virus. He is Cole MacGrath's arch nemesis.

He was voiced by Kevin Rivera, who also voiced Dimitri and Joker.

Personality

Given that the battle pulls more from Alex's villainous role in Prototype 2, Alex is murderous and literally power hungry. He also seems to have a sense of manipulation, as he attempted to get Cole onto his side before Cole refused.

History

At the beginning of the fight, Alex uses his inky black tendril to grab a twin cadre of military helicopters, flinging one into a building, while forcing the other to spin out of control and crash down to the ground. He rips open the helicopter's door before consuming the survivor of the crash, but is suddenly interrupted by a bolt of lightning from Cole MacGrath, who defiantly walks towards him. Alex, amused by his new challenger, decides to consume him as well.

Both then begin using all their abilities to attacks each other, and their battle ends up in a building where Alex begins to consume everyone in the building to become stronger, before being impaled and blown to pieces by a barrage of ice spikes released by Cole. However, his biomass reforms from the lethal attack, as he attains his Evolved state. He attacks Cole until he is face-to-face with him. Alex then claims that Cole is wasting his power on humanity, before attemting to goad Cole into joining his plan for the world. Cole rejects Alex's offer, choosing to side with humanity, and fights back

The battle eventually goes skyward into the air. Alex stabs Cole with a morphed blade, before he begins the process of consuming Cole, sadistically laughing. As Alex appears to be victorious however, Cole, uses a large burst of electric energy forces Alex off of him, and leeches bio-electricity from his body, causing Mercer to only be able to let out screams of agony as they crash onto the ruined streets. Alex, now reduced to a single strand of the Blacklight Virus, is quickly crushed by Cole's hand, finally ending Alex's reign over Manhatten for good.
