Alma Madrigal is a character from the "Disney Princesses but they're Villains" series of songs by British musical artist Lydia the Bard. She is a villainous adaptation of the character from the 2021 animated Disney film Encanto, serving as the main antagonist of Isabela's song and animatic.
Biography[]
This version takes place of the music animatic video of Isabela's story. It would begin off similarly as to how it did in the original Disney version: Alma's family, the Madrigals, were blessed with a magical candle that granted members of the family useful superpowers and abilities, as well as a magical sentient house called Casita.
Alma's family would use their gifted superpowers and abilities to serve their community, with Alma being under their watch. However, Alma's want to keep her family caused her to want to make her family to be "perfect" in her eyes and not liking anything she sees less than "perfect". When Isabela's powers of botanokinesis manifested, Alma only allowed Isabela to create nice things like flowers and vines, unlike in canon, where Isabela never knew she could make anything other than that until the climax. However, Alma would punish Isabela for anything she sees as "imperfections", such as growing things like cacti or thorns, playing rough or getting dirty, as well as telling Isabela that she had to represent the family. This would be Alma's actions of stringent perfectionism.
As Isabela became an adult, Alma still kept Isabela to maintain her "perfect" lifestyle, as well as Alma arranging her marriage to a local man named Mariano Guzmán, who Isabela did not love. Even after Isabela tried to reason with her, Alma shut her daughter down. This would cause Isabela to become enraged by her family's constant pressure on her and abuse at their hands, causing Alma's daughter to reminisce about her difficult childhood in her own room, only to eventually cracks from the stress, and exits her room to lash out at Alma and the rest of her family. Isabela would then embrace her new vengeful dark side by trapping her family, including Alma in vine cages and changing her clothes to better fit her angrier personality. She expresses that she can do so much more than her restrictive and abusive family allows her.
Isabela traps Alma in a cage as well, chastising her for her treatment of her. Alma would show to feel quite guilty of what she has done as she let out tears from her eyes. Alma would try to reach out for Isabela only for the latter to leave her with one last flower before storming off, leaving Alma her family trapped to whatever fate awaits them.
Personality[]
Though she does not speak during the song, she is shown to be a strict and serious authority figure. However this leads to her abusing Isabella just to have her be "perfect" in her eyes.
However, in the end of the song, Alma is shown to feel remorseful, with tears coming out of her eyes after realizing the damage that she has done to Isabella.
Trivia[]
- The story of this version of Alma does not take place in the same continuity as Lydia the Bard's story of villainous Mirabel.
