“ | Don’t you understand, Mirabel? It didn’t have anything to do with ‘not loving him’, or ‘vengeance against him’, no. It wasn’t personal. It was just fate. He had predicted something so dangerous that I couldn’t even see it coming. I couldn’t let anyone know about this! It was never about the family, no, it was all for my country. | „ |
~ Alma after confessing to sending soldiers after her husband. |
Alma Madrigal, known by her grandchildren as Abuela, is the overarching main antagonist of the fan fiction Encanto spinoff franchise, serving as the secret antagonist of the movie and the main antagonist of short story sequels The Greater Power and All For One.
She is the head of the Madrigal family and the corrupt leader of the village. After her husband predicted the bloody conflict known as La Violencia, she sent corrupt soldiers after him to kill him. In doing so, she created the magical candle that gave life to the infamous house Casita, and rebuilt the village, as well as gave gifts to future children. After the magic was saved and restored, Alma began to grow power-hungry and want the magic all for herself to prevent the future conflict, going with unorthodox methods to get what she desired. She was stopped by her granddaughter Mirabel as well as the rest of the family after her true intentions were revealed.
Biography[]
Post-Magic Removal[]
After the events of the movie, Alma knew that the magic was never going to be the same as it once was, due to them not being in control of the magic anymore. She feared that the family would figure out that she was the one who sent the soldiers after her husband and revealed their location after he predicted the infamous bloody civil war known as La Violencia. With this in mind, as well as knowing that she had control over the village and her family’s trust, Alma began her conquest to find a way to trap the magic.
Interrogating Bruno[]
Her first target was Bruno, as Alma knew that he was not sharing something with them. Alma started out by trying to coax Bruno into having another vision, but Bruno was hesitant. Alma reassured him and said that it was for the future of the village, and they couldn’t risk something like what had happened to happen again. They needed to deal with it as a family. With this, Bruno looked into the future and saw what Pedro predicted, the Colombian Civil War. Suddenly realizing his mother’s true intentions, Bruno tried to disarm her, but Alma knocked him out, tied him up, and locked him in his tower, and began torturing him for information, but left when he told her nothing.
Heading to the Village[]
Alma decided to head to the village, and while walking around saw a strange man. She immediately ambushed him, and figured out the man’s name was Alfredo Amez, a Nicaraguan Terrorist. Alfredo told her he simply wanted some of the magic for himself, a simple request. Alma told him her plot. The two formed an alliance to take down the casita and the rest of the Madrigals. The plan was to launch an attack on the Casita, but Alma’s real plan was to frame Alfredo so the suspicious on her were lifted. The next day, the two broke into someone’s house, a person who was a former member of Alfredo’s gang. Alma killed him after the man revealed he knew what Alma did, and burned down his house, destroying evidence that she was there.
Framing Alfredo[]
The attack began in the next week, when Alfredo and his men stormed Casita. The Madrigals fought back, using their powers to stun the men and take them out one by one. After the Madrigals fought off the men, they captured Alfredo and thought of what to do with him, eventually deciding to lock him up in a cell. Alma’s reputation was saved, and her plan began to fall into place after she went into the kitchen and noticed a strange, golden substance dripping off the counter. Scooping it into a jar, Alma knew that this was the magic she was looking for,
Trapping the magic[]
With her image cleared, Alma retreaded to her quarters to begin harnessing the magic. She started with retrieving the blown-out candle, which formerly held all the magic inside of it. Dripping the golden substance on the candle, it immediately flickered back and lit on fire. Shouting out a command, Alma realized that she once again had full control over Casita.
Alma visited Alfredo in his cell. He questioned her on why he would betray her, and Alma responded, “It was never about you. It was only me. Me and the future”. Alma then shot Alfredo with a silenced pistol, then suddenly realized something about Mirabel: that she held the title of Keeper of the Encanto as well, and she had the ability to be as powerful as Alma. Alma thought about killing Mirabel, but instead decided to try to convince Mirabel into joining her.
Confronted by Mirabel[]
Walking out of the cell, Alma was confronted by Mirabel who demanded to know what was going on and why Alma had been more distant from the family. Alma decided to tell Mirabel the truth and said that she was the one who killed Pedro. Shocked, Mirabel asked why and Alma replied that he predicted something so dangerous (the war) and that couldn’t be let out to the public early, as it would cause fear. She also said that she needed the magic for herself to take control and prevent more violence, lying to Mirabel about her true intentions. Alma then asked Mirabel to join her, but Mirabel refused. Alma warned Mirabel that the family would die if Mirabel didn’t join, but still she refused. Finally, Alma shoved Mirabel to the ground and ran off, taking the candle with her. Mirabel alerted the rest of the family.
Final Plot[]
With Mirabel no longer on her side, Alma’s final plot was to release the magic on the world in a hostile way so she could take it over. Harnessing the candle, the same cracks that had tried to destroy Casita before began to tear the village apart. The entire family confronted Alma, but with the power of the magic in her hands, she was too strong for all of them and began absorbing their powers, eventually using it against them. Alma turned to Mirabel and was about to kill her but was shot in the leg by Bruno, who had escaped from his tower and binds. Enraged, Alma reached for the fallen candle but Mirabel stepped on it, destroying the last fragments of the magic.
Imprisonment[]
Alma was imprisoned within Bruno’s tower as her mental health began to deteriorate. The final moments of the story showed Mirabel visiting Alma two years later, and proclaiming that she spoke the truth, and that Pedro really did predict the future.
Personality[]
“ | The complexity of this situation is so complex that I will not allow it to fall into your hands. You are useless to me now. | „ |
