Alphys is the secondary antagonist of the dark Undertale AU: Horrortale.
She serves as the main antagonist of Chapter 3, the secondary antagonist of Chapter 4 and a (presumed) posthumous antagonist in the current day.
Similar to the other characters, Alphys originally acted the same to that way she was in Undertale, but the core running out of power led to her becoming so desperate that she told Undyne to sacrifice Sans and use his magic to jump start the core, however there may have been other reasons as to why she did this.
Biography[]
Sometime after Frisk finished a neutral route, Alphys repairs her robotic companion, Mettaton. The core eventually shuts down and when Undyne, the new queen of the Underground after the death of Asgore and exiling of his ex-wife Toriel, turns to her for help, Alphys silently gives her the message that she can't fix it. Undyne then lashes out at her and leaves, much to Alphys' sadness.
When Papyrus, Undyne and Alphys are trying to fix the core, Sans arrives and gives Undyne blueprints that'll help out. Alphys watches Undyne thank Sans and when the latter convinces her to repair her relationship with the royal scientist. Undyne then hugs Alphys as they reconcile, but the lizard shows a crazed and jealous stare towards Sans as he and Papyrus leave, much to his discomfort.
Months pass and the core is nowhere close to being fixed. When Alphys arrives in her lab, she finds a suicide note left by Undyne. Afraid, Alphys stops her before she jumps off of a ledge in Waterfall and tells her about Sans' magic and how they can use it to re-power the core. She becomes annoyed when Undyne refuses.
After two weeks pass, Alphys tells Papyrus to come to the core in an attempt to lure Sans in and it works. She watches as a mother's child dies and she comforts Undyne afterwards, before she again attempts to convince her to kill Sans and take his magic. Undyne refuses and insults her. When she looks away in regret, Alphys spots Sans arriving and retreats to her lab. She then watches through a camera Undyne and Sans converse; The latter believes they should destroy the "Core's core" and re-power it with some of the monsters' magic.
This causes Undyne to grow confused and frustrated to the point of getting in an argument. This is the last straw, as Undyne snaps and she and her guards fight Sans for his magic. Alphys tells her to tire him out through the speakers, but Sans destroys them before she can give out any more information. Undyne eventually succeeds in tiring out Sans and extracts his eye. Alphys then encourages Undyne to "save them" and use the eye to re-power the core. Surprisingly enough this works.
However, it comes at a great cost as Sans is revealed to still be alive, yet he is now insane and is out for blood. After launching an assault on Undyne and some of her guards, Sans goes searching for Alphys. He finds her and as he prepares to kill her, Alphys shows him the core and tells him he is the one to be thanked for saving the monsters. Just as Sans seems to understand where she was coming from, Alphys makes the mistake of telling Sans she did the right think and doesn't regret her choice.
In retaliation, Sans lobotomizes the back of her head and exposes her brains and destroys the core with bones, rendering the Underground without power once more. Mettaton then shows Undyne the now delusional Alphys, causing to Undyne to become disgusted after seeing the hole in her head. Meanwhile, Mettaton takes Alphys to an unknown place, presumably for medical attention.
As of now, her current status in the present timeline of Horrortale is unknown and if she recovered from the lobotomy or not. In the Horrortale game on Newgrounds, Sans reveals that he doesn't know if Alphys is alive or not, but he doesn't care due to her convincing Undyne to kill him.
Personality[]
Alphys was just like her Undertale counterpart. That being said, shy, nervous and anime obsessed. However, she becomes down lived after Undyne screams at her failure to fix the core. She also became spiteful and jealous of Sans when Undyne praised him for showing her the blueprints of the Core. This caused her to become bitter and selfish, as she later tells Undyne about Sans' magic and how they should use it to fix the core, even going as far as to say he may want this because he is depressed. In turn, this causes Undyne to go crazy and almost kill Sans, which in turn also causes him to go insane.
Alphys seems to express more anger and brashness than she did in Undertale, as she yells at Undyne whenever she refused to sacrifice Sans. However, she can be considered more brave, since she helped Undyne fight Sans by telling him how to wear him down, much to Sans' frustration. After Undyne succeeds in taking his eye, Alphys shows no remorse for causing Sans' supposed death and Undyne's insanity, even smiling as she told Undyne to go through with the plan. Alphys becomes a total coward when Sans confronts her and she fearfully says she had a reason for trying to kill him. She does not seem to be as smart as she was in Undertale either, as she selfishly and arrogantly told Sans she wasn't sorry for convincing Undyne to sacrifice him.
After Sans lobotomizes her, Alphys losses all common sense as she now slurs gibberish and laughs maniacally, supposedly as revenge for the pain she caused him.
Trivia[]
- Alphys has received a lot of hate and backlash from the fans of Horrortale due to her being the main cause for the story's events.
- It is unknown why Alphys ratted Sans out. While it is possible that she only did so Undyne wouldn't kill herself, Sour Apple Studios hints that she may have partly done this because she was jealous of Sans getting on her good side.
- Sans lobotomizing her serves as karma for her indirectly causing him and Undyne to go insane. This is further supported by the fact he has a hole in his head because of her.
- It may have been possible that Alphys was able to fix Mettaton after the neutral run. She herself says to Frisk that she could repair him.
