Alter Ego Monokuma is one of the two secondary antagonists (alongside Akane Taira) of the Korean Danganronpa fangame Danganronpa Another.

He is an artificial intelligence who controls a Monokuma robot, as well as everything within the Kisaragi Foundation facility, and uses his powers to serve the Masterminds and manage the Killing Game.

As the overseer of the Killing Game, he’s the one who enforces the rules and gives the participants motives to commit murder, while also executing whoever fails to get away with it.

Personality[]

Similar to the original Monokuma, he’s an enthusiastic and humorous sadist who clearly enjoys what he does and loves seeing the participants in despair. As the manager of the Killing Game, he’s always trying to convince others to commit murder in order to escape, and will usually make fun of them for thinking they can escape or that there’s a way for them to win. He does all of this in order to satisfy the goals of Utsuro, Akane Taira and Junko Enoshima. He didn’t even care that he was going to be disposed of afterwards, as long as the objectives of his masters were successful.

Biography[]

Background[]

Towa City was known for being able to create highly-advanced technologies. One of those was the invention of Monokuma robots. However, while they were strong enough to defeat a military army, their A.I wasn’t very good. A student named Junko Enoshima wanted to create a Killing Game consisting of several students of Hope’s Peak academy and broadcast it to the world, so it can fall into despair as they watch the world’s most talented people kill each other.

However, Junko wanted to make extra preparations to make sure her future Killing Game will do well, so she decided to create another private Killing Game, involving presumably deceased students, to use it as a test to make sure her’s will go well. For that, she decided to have a Monokuma robot as a manager. She used a technology called “Alter Ego”, an AI developed by Chihiro that works perfectly like a human brain, and modified it so it would have Junko’s personality. The Alter Ego was then implanted into a Monokuma robot, which would then be known as “Alter Ego Monokuma”. Thanks to the programmation of the Alter Ego, that version of Monokuma would stand out as the smartest one, being able to talk and function like a person.

Junko entrusted two members of the Ultimate Despair, Utsuro and Akane Taira, to set up the Killing Game with the help of Alter Ego Monokuma.During the Tragedy, Utsuro and Akane, along with the rest of class 79, were rescued by Yamato Kisaragi and sent to a facility on an island owned by the Kisaragi Foundation. The two followers of Junko decided the Killing Game would happen there, so using several Monokuma robots, they killed all employees within the Kisaragi and knocked out all of the rescued students.

Once that was done, Utsuro put Alter Ego Monokuma in action, giving the latter the role of being the Killing Game’s manager. Monokuma then made the other robots remodel the entire facility to make it resemble Hope’s Peak academy. The students had their memories erased to make them think they had just joined Hope’s Peak academy. Utsuro and Akane also had their memories erased, but the twist being that they would recover them later on. With all the preparations done, the Killing Game began, and all of it was recorded and sent to Junko Enoshima until the end.

Prologue[]

All students of class 79 (Except for Yamato Kisaragi) woke up within the last floor of the facility and, thanks to having their memories erased, everyone (except for Mikako Kurokawa) was thinking they were inside Hope’s Peak. After they finished introducing each other and realized how confusing the situation was, Monokuma made an announcement telling everyone to gather at the gym.

Upon arriving at the gym, they found a robotic talking bear, which was being controlled by alter Ego Monokuma. He introduced himself as Monokuma and revealed to the students that they were in a Killing Game, where they’re gonna be trapped in the school forever and the only way to escape is by committing murder and getting away with it in a class trial. If someone commits murder and is found out in the trial, only they will be executed and the rest of the classmates will continue their Killing School Life. However, if the culprit is not found guilty, they get to escape from the academy and everybody else is executed.

Tsurugi tried to intervene and started attacking Monokuma. However, Monokuma attacked back by firing a round of bullets at Tsurugi. He managed to dodge them, but it was made clear that trying to attack Monokuma was suicide at that point. Monokuma then gave everyone handbooks, told them to respect the rules and disappeared.

Chapter 1[]

After everything they had witnessed, the participants decided to investigate around the school in order to find clues that could help them escape. Everyday, the students would investigate and talk about what they found in a meeting. In one of those meetings, Monokuma appeared and expressed his dissapointment as three days have passed but a murder has nor occured. He then decided to bring up a “motive” so the participants will have a reason to kill, and told everyone to check out the DVDs in the audio-visuals room.

In the A/V room, there were several DVDs dedicated to each participant. Each DVD was different for everyone, but what they shared in common was that they showed the destruction of everything the watcher loved, which made them desperate enough that they wanted to get out as soon as possible.

Later, Haruhiko accidentally broke Tsurugi and Kiyoka's nameplates after bumping into Satsuki. Monokuma appeared and threatened to execute Haruhiko for breaking the rules, but later revealed he was just playing and decided to forgive Haruhiko since it was an accident. Instead, Monokuma gave him a warning and told him to replace the nameplates.

Meanwhile, after seeing horrible things happening to the world and soccer players, Mitsuhiro decided to take Monokuma’s advice and started planning a murder. In an elaborate plan, he killed Kiyoka, although his initial target was Tsuruig, and then left her corpse hanging in the girl’s restroom. When the corpse was found, some suspected it was a suicide, but Monokuma confirmed that it was a murder done by one of the participants. Monokuma then gave them a “Monokuma File” which had some information regarding the murder, as extra help for the class trial, and then left the participants investigate on their own.

After a while, Monokuma told everyone to gather at the carpeted door at the end of the hallway of the school area. There, the students entered an elevator, which led them to a courtroom, where they were supposed to discuss the identity of the culprit. After a long discussion, it was concluded that Mitsuhiro Higa was the murderer. Once they were done discussing it, Monokuma told everyone to vote for who they think did it, and everyone voted for Mitch. Monokuma then announced that they voted correctly and Mitsuhiro was the culprit.

During the post-trial, the rest of the participants had a conversation regarding why Mitch committed murder. As part of the rules of the Killing Game, Mitsuhiro was executed by Monokuma for commiting a murder and failling to get away with it.

Victims[]

  • Mitsuhiro Higa: Executed after being found guilty of killing Kiyoka Maki. He was chained to a giant soccer ball. An army of monokuma robots then appeared and kept kicking the ball around, doing it more violently as time went on, to the point of catching on fire. It continued until Mitch was dead.
  • Ayame Hatano: Executed after being found guilty of killing Kizuna Tomori. She was tied to a moving vehicle which kept running away in a race stadium, while being followed by a car full of saws. As the vehicle was approaching the finish line, the “goal” flag turned out to be a sharp blade, which cut Ayame’s body in half. The “saws car” continued following and hit Ayame, finishing her.
  • 100 Cathedral Children: Killed after freeing them as promised to Kinji Uehara.
  • Kinji Uehara: Executed after being found guilty of killing Kakeru Yamaguchi and Kanata Inori. He was forced to carry a cross and then had his hands nailed to it. The cross was then sent flying towards space, but at some point, it fell back to earth and killed Kiinji.
  • Satsuki Iranami: Executed after being found guilty of killing Haruhiko Kobashikawa. She was put on a barrel and had to withstand as the Monokuma robots threw countless knives at the barrel, injuring her every time. She was later pulled to the ceiling and died.
  • Yamato Kisaragi: Had a bomb installed on his body by Mikako, which was later detonated by Monokuma so he could falsely accuse Mikako of murder and execute her “fairly”.
  • Mikako Kurokawa: Attempted victim. After Monokuma falsely set her up as the murderer of Yamato, Mikako took the opportunity to reveal as much as she could to the remaining participants. This resulted in her dying, due to the collateral effects of the Memory Manipulator, which injured her every time she tried to reveal vital information regarding the Killing Game.
    • Despite the fact she was already dead, Monokuma didn’t want to waste his execution and tried to execute her corpse anyways. Mikako’s corpse was tied to a car, which also had explosives with a cooldown. Her car was supposed to crash into Monokuma’s car and explode, but when the cooldown hit zero and the two cars were nearly colliding, the power went out in the facility, canceling the execution.
  • Utsuro: Killed after Monokuma turned on self-destruction mode, which caused the entire island to collapse. While they were drowning, Utsuro passed down his Divine Luck to Akane Taira, which caused her to survive, while Utsuro drowned and died.
    • He would also kill him under his false identity as Yuki Maeda under Akane Taira's orders in the bad ending.

Trivia[]

  • Monokuma does not appear in the sequel, Super Danganronpa another 2. Instead, Monocrow fills his role as the manager of the Killing School Trip.
    • However, he does get mentioned a few times and, in chapter 4, he has a small cameo in Monocrow's glitched broadcasts.
