Arnulf von Wagenheim is the posthumous overarching antagonist of the dark fantasy Countryhumans fanfic, The Full Moon Hangs Above and will be the villain protagonist of the upcoming prequel, Ulfsbane, and its continuity, Perdition. He was the father and creator of the series' protagonist, Siegfried von Wagenheim.
After Walther von Wagenheim, he was the second to be created by Anton von Wagenheim as the other Weimar Republic in case Walther failed.
Appearance[]
Arnulf has red skin with the Nazi Germany flag on his face, with the swastika replaced with an X, which is also on his armband. His face is rarely shown and is usually wearing a gas mask. As a Blutsauger, he has sharp teeth and can sprout black wings. He wears a black SS officer uniform with a Nazi armband. Apparently, this SS uniform is different as to befit his high rank as the Führer. When not in his uniform, he wears a white long-sleeved button up shirt (more info about Arnulf's non-uniform outfit will come out later).
Before becoming Third Reich, he has yellow skin with the flag of Germany on his face when he is the second Weimar Republic. He wore a black suit over a beige trench coat and a black Homburg hat.
Personality[]
Like Salvatore, Naoko and Yelena (although not completely), Arnulf is cruel and sadistic to his enemies, as he occasionally devours his enemies, and is shown to physically and verbally abuse Siegfried for not accepting his Nazi ideology; however, Arnulf does have his kind moments, where he gave Siegfried glasses for his 6th birthday, and even let Siegfried flee with Heinrich when the Allies are closing in on him before suicide by gunshot, with the latter obeying willingly, meaning that Arnulf actually does not want to kill his son.
Even though he is friends with Salvatore and Naoko, Arnulf isn't above betraying and abandoning them in order to do his own selfish ways, as when he refused to transform Salvatore into a Blutsauger because he thought he became more incompetent after losing to Athena Angelopoulou. Instead, he abused and humiliated him, kidnapped his son, Renato, and transformed him instead as punishment. And after killing himself, Arnulf left Naoko to do everything on her own (However, Naoko sees this as a sign of respect, mainly due to her being more mature and competent than Sal). This reveals Arnulf to be a very selfish and uncaring person even to his own allies (with the sole exception being Naoko), and that he is only concerned about his goals.
Arnulf is a cunning and manipulative individual. With his power of contract bestowal, he uses it on other quasi-gods to get what he wants and also for the benefit of Nazi Germany under the guise of providing the help they need (get revenge on Yelena on behalf of András and Lyudmyla for putting Hungary under Soviet control in 1919 and Holodomor respectively, help Slovakia and Croatia gain independence for Alžběta and Zdravko and save Viorel's sister Zavastia for Moldova) in order to turn them into his puppets. However, they instantly know that Arnulf's tricking them and they manage to snap out of his control and defeat Arnulf as revenge.
However, deep down from his heinous and dangerous exterior and his cunning and cold-hearted demeanor, there exists a deep sense of remorse and regret within him when the situation bitterly festers, as when Siegfried, when he was ten, asked him why he killed Walther after Arnulf kidnapped him to stop his escape, Arnulf was so swayed and shocked by how his son instantly remembered killing his older brother he decided to explain the whole truth, and when they went back home and sat down, Arnulf truthfully explained to his son how it all started with Anton making Walther heir and his relationship with Yelena, and revealing how Arnulf became Nazi Germany and Siegfried's birth and Walther's fratricidal death and lying to his grandparents about it, which unfortunately alerted a tearful Luise and enraged Werner who scolded Arnulf over manipulating them, even adding that Anton should've punish him. Arnulf fearfully tries to reason with his grandparents as Siegfried came over to Luise to come to her and and takes him somewhere else to protect him from his father. Werner reveals that Goddess Europe will come punish him as he catches up with his wife and great-grandson. As Arnulf quivers in cowardice and wracked remorse over this, Heinrich betrays him and leaves to Werner and Luise's place. When Arnulf asks if he's so fucked, Goddess Europe appears and confirms, and has the punishment that shames Anton's punishment. However, Arnulf foolishly stands his ground in uncontrollable anger by telling her she's not gonna punish him the same way she did to his dad for killing off two African groups, only for Europe to shut him up by grabbing his neck and lifting him up to her eye level, making Arnulf even more scared. Europe then says that, as his divine punishment, she'll make sure to inflict him monstrous night terrors that can only be cured if he has a change of heart and stop being so mean to everyone and have him resign from God-King of Nazi Germany as she spirits him away to Arnulf's most unfathomable nightmare.
History[]
Background[]
(More details will be explored in the prequels later, as most of these are flashbacks from TFMHA in chronological order)
Anton created Arnulf in January 4, 1899, just one year after the creation of Walther. When the first world war started in 1914, Anton left his family to fight in the war, leaving the two brothers to their grandparents Luise and Werner to take care of them. As the war ended in 1918, Anton was close to disintegrating from his retirement. He chose Walther as his successor because he believed the eldest child had better responsibilities. This angered Arnulf, which made him kill his brother and cover up his death as a tragic accident in March 23, 1933.
At the same day, Arnulf created Siegfried and made him his heir in hopes of becoming his successor after his death, which, in the modern era, didn't work.
In 1936, they went to Italy for a meeting with Salvatore, who brought his twin children Beatrice and Renato over. In the same year, he gets a visit from Nao for the Anti-Comintern Pact, who also brought her daughter, Kanoko, over as well. Beatrice and Kanoko became Siegfried's friends, and he and Renato are also good friends until his death.
In 1939, he paid a visit to Yelena with the intention of signing the non-aggression treaty. Despite signing the treaty, Yelena remains apprehensive of him due to their ideological differences, as she is aware of what happened to Walther.
A month later, Arnulf managed to capture Dobiesław and Zbigniew Malinkiewicz, who were father and son. He chose Dobiesław and brought him to a formerly-unknown room, where he proceeded to extract his blood before placing his remains inside a bag. He returned to where he had confined Zbigniew, who was in a fit of annoyed rage and asking him about his father, while fearing that he might have harmed him in some way. Arnulf presented the bag to Zbigniew, which caused him severe emotional distress upon inspecting its contents. Arnulf chuckled at his response and proudly declared it to be his inaugural experience of savoring the blood of a Slavic country. However, Arnulf's arrogance got the better of him, as Zbigniew did manage to escape his prison when he turned into Polish Underground State, and successfully defeated and beaten up Arnulf as karmic revenge for killing his father. Luckily, in the present day, Zbigniew is aware that Siegfried is nothing like his villainous father, and sometimes avoids him.
In 1941, Arnulf asked Yelena to visit his office, which initially made her hesitant due to her suspicion that he might have laid a trap. Arnulf appears unexpectedly behind her as she enters his office and announces that the agreement has been terminated. In a bid to weaken her, knowing fully well about her prowess, he attempted to blind her by scratching her right eye, to which he did. Yelena managed to evade Arnulf's attempt to claw her left eye by landing a swift punch before fleeing, and found out that Operation Barbarossa had been launched, much to Roza's worrying concern.
Arnulf then met Lyudmyla (who was called Lyudmila at the time), who was sent by Yelena to patrol a Ukrainian village. She aimed her rifle at him, but was hesitant to shoot because she didn't want this job in the first place, so she lowered her rifle and Arnulf smiles as he found a new vulnerable target, and grabs her arm to go somewhere private.
He recognizes her as one of Yelena's daughters through their conversations 2 years ago. Arnulf asks Lyudmyla if she has a wish that he can grant, and she tells him that she almost starved to death because of how Yelena mistreated her. Arnulf turns into his Weimar form to appear less intimidating and hands out a contract, promising her that this will help liberating Ukraine from Soviet control (which unfortunately turns out to be just a lie to manipulate her). Lyudmyla signs it and Arnulf bit her hand after that, putting her into a numb state. However, Yelena managed to save her from Arnulf, as Lyudmyla came back to her senses as Kyiv is free from Nazi occupation.
He met Yelena once again, who was injured in the snowy woods. With Yelena being unable to walk, Arnulf thinks it's the right time for him to successfully devour her. But then, Roza shows up behind him and shoots him in the leg. Arnulf screeches and knocks Roza out, and flew away, which fails her plan to capture him.
When Siegfried turned six years old, Arnulf bought him glasses as a birthday gift, because Arnulf reminded him a lot of the former's late brother, Walther, without them. Arnulf started telling him stories of relatives Siegfried never got a chance meet in person (with the sole exception for Werner, who's still alive), then he started to indoctrinate him, trying to convince him into supporting Nazism several times; sometimes, he physically and verbally abuses Siegfried for trying to go against him.
As Siegfried got older; he now learned that his father is responsible for the Second World War and the atrocities he, Sal and Naoko has committed. Arnulf accidentally and stupidly revealed the truth that he was responsible for Walther's death. Upon hearing this, Siegfried attempted to escape, but got caught easily and was forced to live with his father for the rest of his life, but thankfully, this forced imprisonment did not last long.
In 1945, as WWII neared its end, Arnulf found out the Allies had arrived in Berlin and made plans to escape together with Siegfried, but it was too late, so he ordered Heinrich to take Siegfried to run and hide somewhere safe where he couldn't be found by the Allies, and the latter obeyed. In his final moments, he took out his gun and shot himself.
Later, he now lives as a Replica that can manifest in Siegfried's dreams, though the manifestations thankfully do not last long.
Relationships[]
Anton von Wagenheim[]
Arnulf despises his father for not making him the heir and made him the next in line to the throne instead. Not much is known about their relationship, although he also didn't care that his dad got beaten up in a fistfight against Naoko due to conquering the German-occupied Pacific Islands, showing he has favor for Naoko instead, as well as Salvatore having a bad relationship with his father i.e. the Triple Alliance.
Walther von Wagenheim[]
Arnulf had a deep resentment towards his older brother Walther, due to their father's decision to appoint him as the heir, with Arnulf as the next in line. Since they were kids, Arnulf loved to make fun of him for his inability to swim. When Walther assumed power, Arnulf attempted to drown him by pushing him into the lake Königssee, which got Arnulf arrested (and was released after for some reason).
When Walther met Yelena, Arnulf began spying on them. He hates his brother's friendship with the Slavic woman because he thinks there's something off about her, given that she is from the Ozarovskaya/Ozarovsky family. Arnulf started throwing false accusations at Walther about being romantically involved with Yelena, which resulted in him getting smacked. He tried to convince Walther to stop talking to her or letting her into their house because he didn't want them to become allies.
Werner von Wagenheim[]
Not much of their relationship is explored, but Arnulf appears to despise his grandfather Werner for disagreeing with his political beliefs.
Luise von Wagenheim[]
Apparently, Arnulf despised his grandmother Luise for being against his political beliefs.
Siegfried von Wagenheim[]
When Siegfried turned 10 years old, Arnulf's relationship with his own son deteriorated due to his Anti-Nazi morality, and is very malicious towards him when it comes to the ideology, and even almost had the chances of threatening to kill Siegfried too, as shown in Chapter 2, yet he fails to do so.
Beatrice Gastaldello[]
Arnulf despised Beatrice due to her Anti-Fascist morals, and even tried to kill her, and wants to stop her from marrying his only son, both to no avail.
Kanoko Sakuranomiya[]
Oddly, despite her Anti-Imperialist morals, Arnulf showed no hostility or interest to Kanoko.
Heinrich Würdemann[]
Arnulf is very cruel to his former chief assistant, Heinrich, going as far as threatening to shoot him for refusing to participate in his atrocities.
Zbigniew Malinkiewicz[]
He showed resentment to Zbigniew due to his escape from confinement after Zbigniew barbarically beaten Arnulf as his punishment for killing his dad out of justified anger.
Salvatore Gastaldello[]
He used to be friends with Sal, until he became fed up with his failures, so he horrifically abused, humiliated and betrayed Sal after he lost to Athena, kidnapped Renato, and turned him into a Blutsauger, leaving Sal to die on his own.
Naoko Sakuranomiya[]
Apparently, Arnulf greatly respects Naoko and even treats her like a goddess, and Naoko shows care and honor to Arnulf in return, obviously because she's far more crueler, cunning, aggressive, more competent and smarter than Salvatore. After Sal is betrayed, Arnulf chooses Naoko as his ally and female counterpart-successor on account that Naoko is aware that Sal failed them too much, and the two shook hands that they will rule Earth together, even after Arnulf killed himself.
Yelena Ozarovskaya[]
Arnulf and Yelena are arch-enemies due to their ideological differences. When they first met, Arnulf could barely talk to her to due to him suspecting her of having a romantic relationship with his older brother Walther. After Walther's death, Arnulf developed an unhealthy obsession with Yelena, and wants her as his meal if she loses the war.
Roza Ozarovskaya[]
Not much of their relationship is explored, but it's shown that Arnulf despised Roza for shooting him and ruining his plan to cannibalize Yelena.
Khashayar Khalilzadeh[]
Arnulf and Khashayar had a short-lived friendship. When Khashayar first met Arnulf, he thanked him for sparing Iranians living in Germany from the Nuremberg Laws because they are classified as pure-blood Aryans. Khashayar later found out that Arnulf only befriended him in order to manipulate him and make him his collaborator. Arnulf handed him a contract but he snatched it and ripped into glowing smithereens, which left Arnulf frozen as Khashayar angrily left his office. Arnulf had no interest in taking him back due to Khashayar being a light user.
Powers & Abilities[]
- Flight - Arnulf can fly via sprouting black wings from his back.
- Manifested Guardian - Arnulf can summon his partially awakened demon, Halphadriel as his sentient shadow via strong negative emotions. Due to a drug Arnulf is taking thanks to Dr. Albrecht, Halphadriel cannot use his powers or turn into full form, lest Arnulf will black out into unconsciousness if he tried.
- Typhokinesis - In the Hold Them Down animatic, Arnulf can create feathers that turn into smoke, which can form into a snake. The purpose of this ability is not only for attacking but it is shown to put Viorel and András into a trance by corruption, although both Viorel and András managed to snap out from the trance.

Kindness and Generosity: Salvatore Gastaldello Reforms as Good[]
Arnulf appears in the crossover fanfic titled Kindness and Generosity: Salvatore Gastaldello Reforms as Good by lucasblakeman0, this time as the tragic villain, who is now a slave to Naoko's omnicidal tendencies, along with Himmel. Apparently, the X on both Arnulf's face and armband are now replaced with Nazi swastikas. After their revival and enslavement, Arnulf and Himmel suffered Naoko's psychotic, cruel, heartless and harsh abuse and mistreatment badly, even when they try to attempt to stand up to her in order to correct and punish her, something that really pisses off Naoko and that she practically goes on fire.
After the psychotic and deranged warping of the Cold War, Naoko went back to Arnulf and Himmel, and as their punishment for refusing to do anything because of the abuse, vulgarity, profanity and cruelty they suffered, were inappropriately punished, murdered and cannibalized by Naoko, only to have their ghosts revived to continue cruelly mistreating them, along with successfully conquering North America to finally complete her already-failed All Continent Enslavement Act (because she already did South America, Europe, Asia, Africa, Antarctica and Oceania), much to everyone's horror. Luckily, Sal, along with the rest of the gang, saved Arnulf and Himmel and punished Naoko. Curiously, even when they're brought to a now-peaceful rest, Arnulf and Himmel are also present to watch over Naoko after her redemption promise, with Arnulf hanging out with Hoki while officially calling him Grandpa Scarby/Scarbo. Interestingly, since Naoko has behaved better, Arnulf bravely reconciled with her, and politely asked her if she wants to be married to him, to which she delightfully agreed, and since Naoko is in a generous mood, she said that she'll also marry him in return, much to Arnulf's happiness. In fact, during March 1, 2023, they recently got married, much to Hoki's joy.

Trivia[]

- The first element indicates Arnulf as a Blutsauger, an in-universe vampire species that can shapeshift into an eagle.
- The name also looks close to "Adolf" (noble wolf), referencing Hitler.
- Aside from the black eagle, another one of Arnulf's animal motifs is a snake, a nod to one of his aliases "The Tempter".
