Ashton Bunston is the main protagonist of the web series/ ARG "Project Evidence". In the first season he is left cryptic videos on his cell phone by someone in a smiling mask, in one of the videos the mask comes off and it is revealed that Ashton himself is Smiley, without realizing it. It is not confirmed in the first season why Smiley exists but it is heavily implied that he is working for The Creature (who would later appear in season 2 and stalk Ashton and Evan). Making him a proxy. After Ashton finds out he is Smiley he throws the mask away and is never Smiley again. But not before he (as Smiley) had already forced Ashton's girlfriend Emma to commit suicide, (which led Ashton to continue investigating until the season 1 finale when he quit). In between seasons 1 and 2 people tried to email Ashton's Gmail account but only one person ever got a response. That led fans on a journey through different websites of Airabe Lakes, the fictional town that Project Evidence takes place in. In season 2, he is stalked by The Creature, which is Project Evidence’s take on Slender Man.
Season 1:[]
12 year old Ashton is walking to his friends house when he finds a pill bottle on the ground which he takes due to it looking a lot like the pills his girlfriend takes. He decides to talk about it on camera and posts it to a YouTube channel under the name “Introduction” as he plans on documenting what he finds out about these pills. He goes to his girlfriends house and asks her about the pills, finding out that they are in fact hers. They go to a forest that has been banned to the public due to children going missing in it. He uploads them as Entries #1, #2 and #3.
Ashton finds Emma dead and records himself talking about it, labelling it as Entry #4. He mentions finding bullets in her room and that he doesn’t believe she killed herself and that there has to be more going on. He finds 3 videos on his phone from somebody in a strange smiling mask, who, in the third video, turns out to be Ashton himself under some sort of trance. It is revealed that Ashton turned evil and became “Smiley” and forced Emma to kill herself.
Ashton goes to an abandoned house and uploads it as Entry #5. He goes inside the abandoned house and he is attacked by two hooded people, he kills one of them and the other gets away. He labels this as Entry #6. He starts a Twitter to keep people updated about the videos. Ashton later goes back to the abandoned house and disappears. His brother Evan finds his phone at the abandoned house and uploads the footage from it as Entry #7.
Evan posts a video from Ashton’s phone that he recorded before going to the abandoned house. In the video, Ashton messes with a journal that seems to have a spirit in it that says its name is Logan Barons. The journal tells Ashton that the abandoned house will have the explanation he seeks. Ashton is saved by Evan from his kidnappers and uploads it as Entry #8.
Ashton decides to quit investigating and uploads a goodbye video as Entry #9 before deleting his channel and Twitter.
ARG:[]
Ashton’s YouTube channel is brought back online with no videos, only having an email in the about section. Someone sends an email to the address and gets strange responses talking about something watching Ashton and references to Slender Man.
Eventually, the reader was sent to a police station website from Airbe Lakes, the fictional town that Project Evidence takes place in. The site had a link to a submit tips site which had 6 videos of Ashton and Evan taking place after season 1.
Ashton and Evan receive a memory card and find strange footage on it. They go to an abandoned house and look for anything that could be connected to the footage. Ashton sets up his own website with 3 more videos. Ashton’s site has a link to a site where you can buy cameras, and a secret page has another video.
Much later, in another video, Evan finds out that Ashton has been taking pills for some sort of sickness that he has gained and that it has gotten worse and he needs to sell his pills to a mysterious figure in order to get a better dose. Ashton later records himself at home out of paranoia and gets texted by the man leaving him the medication. It turns out that someone has stolen the meds. Ashton goes back to the abandoned house the next day and finds notes from somebody that contain a strange symbol of a circle with two white eyes and the rest all black. He brings Evan to the abandoned house and they find more pages from this person.
Ashton finds Evan at the abandoned house after he had been attacked. He hears something and they hide and Evan is taken before Ashton is also taken, only for them to wake up in their beds and believe all of the ARG story to have been a dream.
A very long time later and the two are sent a giant box with many strange items. They find cards wth two symbols that correspond with two masks worn by characters of the AR G, with their names being confirmed as The Masked One and The Hooded One. They go back to the abandoned house and attempt to do a ritual to get rid of the sickness that Ashton has. The ritual doesn’t end up working. This is the last time we see Ashton in the ARG.
Season 2[]
The first episode of season 2 (Entry #10) does on feature Ashton except for a small cameo at the end where he talks to Evan about what occurred while he was gone (That being, The Masked One giving him a strange device). Ashton and Evan go back to the abandoned house. They post it as Entry #11.
They go back again and are attacked by The Hooded One and knocked out but are not taken by The Creature as they are not dead. This is uploaded as Entry #12, but couldn’t have been uploaded by Ashton. They later wake up and head inside to find that there is a twitter account logged in on the PC and Ashton manages to make it his. They find videos on a site from the ARG that seem to show The Masked One finding his mask. They post this as Entry #12.5.
Ashton goes to the abandoned house again, this time alone, after being told by a Twitter follower of videos that had been published to his channel that he couldn’t see that someone was stuck there. He walks into the shed of the backyard and ends up unable to leave through an invisible barrier. After about a week he ends up teleported home.
Much time passes and Ashton eventually finds The Masked One at the abandoned house while there with Evan. They manage to knock him down and unmask him, finding out his name is Logan Barons, who happens to be the kid who possessed the journal from season 1. They post this as Entry #13. After Logan returns to being himself and not The Masked One, Ashton asks him a few questions.
Some more time passes and Ashton receives a note from Logan, saying that he wants to meet in the forest. Ashton goes but Logan never shows up. Evan is attacked by The Creature after losing his device and turned into a proxy, making Ashton want to give up before deciding he wants to rescue Evan.
A while later and Ashton posts Entry #14, where he talks about going to the forest to meet Logan and how The Hooded One and The Creature appeared and tried to kill them. He says that the footage was too distorted to see so he had to just recap it. On his one year anniversary of having started his channel, Ashton posts a video talking about how he went to the abandoned house and found a strange creature that he managed to find Evan’s device and that the strange creature turned out to be Evan and that he had been turned into a proxy.
Ashton is taken by somebody. We don’t see him for the rest of season 2.
Season 3[]
At the beginning of season 3, Ashton reveals that he has been living with some strangers as he arrived there after being taken in season 2. Ashton is taken from the place that he is staying at and wakes up in a strange house out of space time. Ashton finds a USB, with videos that take place between seasons 2 and 3 on it, showing Ashton arriving at the place he was staying, as well as trying to keep The Creature from attacking his new family. Ashton and The Creature make a brief alliance to get him out of the house. Eventually, Ashton leaves the house. He returns to the site of the house, and it is gone. Ashton decides to return to the abandoned house from season 2, and finds a note there left for him. Ashton's friend Hunter goes missing and Ashton goes to the dog park to find him. Ashton is attacked and wakes up in the abandoned house again. Ashton meets his future self, and is taken outside of space and time again to avoid his own death, which changes the future and erases that specific version of his future self from ever having existed. Ashton returns to the present day, but is attacked during an event known as The Feast. Ashton is spared by The Creature, but is attacked by somebody else and is transported to the future and tortured.
Ashton is trapped in the future, and is attacked by a future version of Evan but kills him. Ashton's camera is destroyed during the fight, and Ashton commits suicide afterward.
Ashton arrives in The Sanctuary. Ashton stays trapped in The Sanctuary for over a year before he escapes. Ashton is sent through time into the past but gets back to the future. Ashton is attacked by The Creature and turned into a proxy. Ashton is given the soul of a serial killer named Chuckles The Clown. Ashton is turned into Future Ashton, erasing the original Future Ashton, and goes on a killing spree.
The original Ashton returns, and uses the ability to time travel to find a journal and save Evan from The Sanctuary, before he removes himself from the proxies. After Ashton is taken by The Creature, he agrees to allow Chuckles to take over his body and turn him back into Future Ashton.
The original version of Ashton does not appear until part 5 of the 6 part series finale, where, in the path between worlds, he speaks with Evan one last time before they both lose their memories.
