The Atomwaffen Division is one of the main antagonists in the Hearts of Iron 4 mod, The Fire Rises, and is a potential member of the National Front (alongside the Patriotic Front and the National Socialist Movement), and is the main villainous protagonist if the player decides to play as Atomwaffen Division.
It is a neo-Nazi terrorist network that seeks to provoke a nuclear apocalypse to exterminate all Jews and non-whites around the world.
History[]
Background and Early years[]
It was founded by Brandon Russell in October 2015, who announced its formation on the neo-Nazi forum Iron March under the username "Odin." Russell stated that the group had been in development for at least three years. The group was formed in the southern United States and later expanded across the country and to other countries.
Russell stated that Atomwaffen was for "very fanatical and ideological people who do military training, absolutely no keyboard warriors." They initially claimed to have 40 members in the United States, mainly in Florida. Their propaganda and recruitment strategies were based on The Order, a white supremacist terrorist group from the 1980s.
Early expansion and criminal activities[]
In 2017 and 2018, AWD attracted significant attention, particularly among neo-fascist accelerationists, due to a series of high-profile violent incidents. In May 2017, AWD member Devon Arthurs murdered two roommates. Following this incident, FBI investigators discovered a large quantity of explosive material in Brandon Russell's garage, leading to his arrest.
Russell was arrested for possession of unregistered destructive devices. The prosecution alleged that he planned to attack civilians, synagogues, and nuclear facilities with the explosives. In September 2017, Russell pleaded guilty and was sentenced to five years in prison in January 2018.
Over an eight-month period between 2017 and early 2018, there were five deaths linked to Atomwaffen Division. Since 2017, the organization has been linked to eight murders and several violent hate crimes in the United States, including assaults, rapes, and multiple cases of kidnapping and torture. The group maintained a cell-based organizational structure with an estimated membership of several dozen to 80 people located throughout the United States. With approximately 50 to 80 members nationwide, AWD's strategy was to commit acts of violence to destabilize society and provoke a "race war."
As a result of these incidents, AWD became a dominant brand in the field of accelerationism and was considered by experts to be a key entity in the generation of "franchised" networks and environments. In February 2020, the Department of Justice announced the nationwide arrest of members of the neo-Nazi group Atomwaffen Division for cyberstalking and sending threatening communications, including posters with swastikas in a campaign against journalists in several cities.
2020s[]
In March 2020, James Mason announced Atomwaffen's disbanding, but it was heavily speculated that they had gone underground. In the period before the 2020 election, Atomwaffen, along with other extremist groups, expanded its ranks with new members thanks to the economic collapse precipitated by the Oil Crisis and COVID-19.
When the Second American Civil War broke out, Atomwaffen seized control of much of southern Florida after a series of brutal massacres upon minorities and political dissidents. If the Atomwaffen Division were to join the National Front and then unify the United States, a “National Conference” would be convened among the members of the front to decide which far-right faction would lead the unified United States. If Atomwaffen has the greatest legitimacy, the negotiations would fail and the National Socialist Movement and the Patriotic Front would declare war on Atomwaffen. Only after winning would they unify the United States.
Regardless of whether or not they join the National Front, if they succeed in unifying the United States under their control, they will declare war on the United Nations, essentially the entire world. After that, they will endure invasions from both Mexico and Canada and even the remnants of the Naval Command, while they begin to amass enough nuclear weapons to destroy the world.

Ideology[]
The central ideology of AWD is an extreme form of accelerationist neo-Nazism, classified under the umbrella of National Socialism, but with ramifications that make it unique and omnicidal (i.e., aimed at the total destruction of humanity in order to “restart” society). Accelerationism, as the main doctrine, seeks to accelerate the collapse of modern civilization—considered degenerate and controlled by “Judeo-Bolshevik manifestations”—through acts of indiscriminate violence, sabotage, and chaos. This is based on the “Doctrine of Destruction,” taken from Siege, which promotes inflicting maximum damage on perceived enemies, including not only racial minorities and Jews, but also whites who do not share their extremist vision, whom they consider traitors to the race. The ultimate goal is to create a world in ruins from which the “white race” can rise again and dominate, eliminating any form of diversity or dissent.
The AWD is divided into three main political factions, each with its own sub-ideology, leaders, and approximate popularity at the outset (around 60% for the accelerationists, 17% for the Christians, and 16% for the Satanists). These factions compete for influence, resulting in ramifications that alter the country's name, its policies, and its ultimate goal of unifying the United States.
- Accelerationists (National Socialists): Led by Brandon Russell (founder and initial leader, expert in militia tactics with attack and defense bonuses in central territory), this is the dominant faction. Their ideology is pure accelerationism, adhering to siege warfare, focused on racial purity, anti-Semitism, and social collapse through nuclear weapons. If it wins (neutral moral balance), the country is renamed the “National Socialist Order of America.” It includes elements such as the implementation of Juche principles in its accelerationist tree, showing an ideological fusion with state authoritarianism to maximize destruction. James Mason can assume leadership after unifying Florida, with traits that increase stability in war penalties. This branch emphasizes chemical/biological warfare, destroying food supplies and population centers to accelerate the apocalypse.
- Satanists (Babylonians/despotic Nazism): Under Joshua Sutter's command, this faction incorporates the Order of Nine Angles, a Nazi satanic cult. If Sutter takes command, the ideology evolves into a despotic satanic Nazism, which rejects all religions (especially Christianity) and promotes human sacrifice, church burning, and an “Empire of the Final Aeon.” This reflects “Hollywood Satanism,” where Satanism is used to intensify terror and genocidal white supremacy.
- Christians (Clerical Fascism): Led by Jordan Jereb, this branch embraces Christian Identity, a Christian neo-Nazism that views white people as the chosen people and justifies racism, anti-Semitism, homophobia, and slavery with distorted biblical interpretations. If they take the lead, the country becomes the “Kingdom of God upon Earth.” This sub-ideology is an “evil religion” disguised as Christianity, supporting the nuclear plan to “cleanse” the world of non-Christian white heterosexual neo-Nazis. It includes recruitment through parties that mimic Jim Jones' People's Temple to attract communists with right-wing potential.
