She’s going to whisper things, follow you, and whatever else she can to get your attention. It’s going to be very difficult, son, but you must never interact with her. I promise she will leave, but only if you pretend she isn’t there, and try not to think about her. Promise me. | „ |
~ The narrator’s father warning them about the parasite |
The Attention Parasite is the titular main antagonist of the short horror story from R/Nosleep, You are going to notice a woman in your home, you must ignore her. Physical Appearance[]
Typically, the parasite manifests as a humanoid figure, resembling a rotten corpse of a woman, with long black hair, decrepit skeletal hands, and grey skin.
Biography[]
Prior to the events of the story, the earliest known appearance of the parasite was in the 70s, when the narrator’s aunt had been infected by an his father’s sister, who was also previously infected by an unknown individual. She has apparently disappeared for years until 1999, when she came back due to the father remembering her existence.
The narrator first learns of her after their father stops them from going downstairs and informing them about the parasite and to ignore her at all costs, and to never tell anyone of her existence in order to quarantine her. The narrator obliges and goes to dinner, with the parasite watching them.
The author’s sister briefly fails to keep it together, allowing the woman to approach her and rest its hand on her shoulder. They spend the remainder of their dinner in silence as to not trigger the parasite.
It had remained, visible to nobody but the author’s family. Even following them to places it reasonably couldn’t have walked to.
Finally, the author’s mother cracks and yells at the parasite to leave them alone, prompting it to attack. Whatever it had done to her, it left no body behind, merely a pool of blood.
After this, it remained for years, beckoning the author to look at her in order to see their mother again. The narrator finally decides to tell the reader about the parasite in order to pass it onto them in order to save his family.
Personality[]
From the little that is gleamed from the parasite’s personality, it is a sadistic being who only chooses to attack when noticed, and even trying to coax the narrator into killing themselves when they were a child under the “promise” of being able to reunite with their mother.
Trivia[]
- In Grimoire Horror’s adaptation, she actually succeeds in killing the entire family, whilst in the story her only confirmed kill was the mother.
