Today means the surface.
~ Axis's check flavor text
HUMANS AND MONSTERS, WHILE DIFFERENT, DO SHARE ONE THING. INDIVIDUALITY. YOU HAVE THE FREEDOM TO BE UNIQUE. TO CHOOSE. BOTS LIKE ME ARE JUST ONE MODEL AMONG MANY. THOUGH, THAT DOES NOT SEEM LIKE SUCH THE CASE ANYMORE.

THE STEAMWORKS HAVE SEEN BETTER DAYS, ALONG WITH ITS BOTS. BUT I BELIEVE WE CAN MAKE IT WORK. IF WE LEFT THIS PLACE, WE WOULD ONLY CAUSE ISSUES AND BE SHUT DOWN. BUT HERE, WE DO HAVE A FORM OF FREEDOM. THE FREEDOM TO BE FLAWED.

~ Axis's views on the condition of the Steamworks' robots
YOU SEE, I DO nOT HAvE THE FrE3DOM5 YoU HAVE.

MY PROGRAMMING. . .

I H4D no_CHOICE.

I WAS FORCED TO NEUTRALIZE THAT HUMAN.

~ Axis confessing that he murdered the Blue Soul Human.

Axis Model 014, simply known as Axis, is the secondary antagonist in the fanmade prequel to UNDERTALE, Undertale Yellow.

Axis is the latest and last model in a series of guard robots created by Chujin Ketsukane to protect monsterkind from humans. After they were discontinued by repeated failure, he was tasked by Chujin to take down a human who descended into the Underground after they hurt his daughter and presumably killed many. Axis would succeed and claim the human's soul which Chujin would use in experiments.

During the Pacifist and Neutral routes, Axis pursues Clover for intruding into the Steamworks, hoping to terminate them. Conversely, on the Genocide route Axis would flee from Clover after being badly damaged by them, hoping to evacuate the robots of the region and save them from Clover's wrath.

Appearance[]

Axis is a stereotypical looking grey robot. He has a large rectangular head, mismatched pink eyes and four dots forming his mouth. He has two antennae with light bulbs on the top, a larger yellow light bulb on his head as well as a dark grey curvy pipe. He has an oval body with a heart symbol in its center representing his power level, a bronze gear in his back, a singular black wheel functioning as his role of locomotion and orange gloves which are attached to his body by puffs of grey smoke. In the Genocide route the left side of Axis's face is damaged, revealing his black wiring underneath.

Personality[]

Befitting of his purpose as a killing machine, Axis is a hotheaded yet dull robot, stopping at nothing to eliminate his targets but still being dimwitted enough to be fooled easily. He seems to be rather airheaded, being foiled by Ceroba and Clover simply hiding in two lockers and being tricked into momentarily stopping his chase by the former after she quickly convinces him that she's not distracting him. Axis is also rather arrogant, gloating over Clover's gullibility when they fall into his traps and seeming proud of being able to exploit his programming's loopholes. Despite this he's also somewhat of a hypocrite as, despite forcibly handing Clover a "weapon" (a trashcan lid) to qualify them as a threat he can fight and exploit a loophole in his programming, Axis is soon annoyed by how they repurpose the lid as a shield to block his attacks. He's also shown to be rather foul-mouthed as he appears to curse multiple times though they’re censored.

However, Axis is at core a kind-hearted and sensitive robot. It's displayed that when not fuelled by his destructive rage, Axis is a polite and gentle machine, apologising to Clover in the Neutral route when spared and keeping them in his memory bank so as to not target them again. He's also capable of feeling genuine love, being smitten by the robot Ceroba and Clover create for him in the Pacifist route and later taking the robot (now christened Daisy) on romantic dates in the credits scene, with Axis also missing his creator Chujin dearly. Above all, Axis is selfless and cares deeply for his compatriots as he expresses his wish for the robots to keep living their flawed but fulfilled existence in the Steamworks during the Neutral route and in the Genocide route, Axis risks his life rushing about the Steamworks evacuating as many of his fellow automatons as possible, trying to take one last stand and stop Clover's rampage. Despite this, Axis is still scared of death as when Clover's about to execute the final blow, he begs for them to see reason and spare him.

Biography[]

Backstory[]

Many years before the events of the game, Chujin Ketsukane, an engineer in the Steamworks, would begin working on a line of robot guards to protect monsterkind from any rogue humans: the Axis model line. However, despite his efforts each model of Axis failed when he presented them to Asgore: Model 01 broke down in barely any time, Model 03 mistook Asgore as a threat and fired missiles at him, while Model 07 refused to enter the throne room. This eventually culminated in Model 08 malfunctioning and setting Asgore's flowerbed ablaze with its sparks, causing him to fire Chujin and instead hire Dr. Alphys as Royal Scientist, remarking that while Chujin's intentions were pure, Asgore needed a more competent individual for the job. Despite this setback, Chujin would continue working on the Axis model line in secret, eventually culminating in Axis Model 014.

One day, while on a trip to Snowdin with his daughter Kanako, Chujin was preoccupied and wasn't around when a human arrived and attacked Kanako's friend, gravely injuring him. Chujin would be horrified by the notion that his daughter was so close to harm and thus, with his misanthropic views solidified, he would send Axis to terminate the human. Axis would track them down to Waterfall and swiftly eliminate them with a blast to the head, claiming the human's soul. Despite this act of murder, both Chujin and Axis would feel remorseful about killing a child, with the latter regretting that his programming forced him to obey the orders to end the human,

Realising he needed a new defence for monsters against humanity, Chujin would use the human's soul to try and formulate a serum capable of strengthening ordinary monsters into Boss Monsters. In the meantime, Axis would lie dormant in the Steamworks, unaware of Chujin's eventual passing.

Undertale Yellow[]

Neutral Route[]

After Clover ventures into the Steamworks, they activate the generators and accidentally recharge Axis, causing him to emerge and find them. Axis lists their crimes: trespassing into private property and activating machinery without a license. He asks Clover if they plead guilty or not and regardless, punishes them by dropping through a trap door. With Flowey's vines cushioning their fall, Clover ends up in a storage room where they must escape through a vent. If Clover attempts to leave through a nearby door, they will find Axis waiting for them, who ridicules Clover before sending them back on the first try and locking the door on the second thanks to nearly leaving after the first.

After Clover escapes, Axis is encountered once again when they go through the Offices, causing a chase to ensue. If Clover is caught, Axis will "apprehend" them by putting them in an unlocked room, allowing them to escape again and for Axis to chase them. Axis eventually bumps into a series of servers, causing him to briefly power off and let Clover escape. Shortly after, Axis breaks open a window and begins firing energy balls at Clover, forcing them to dodge. Eventually reaching a dead end, Axis prepares to fire a powerful attack at Clover but his attack is intercepted by Flowey's pellet, forcing him to retreat and repair himself.

Later on, after Clover melts down a lock to open a door, Axis arrives with his own vial of acid that he intends to use on them. However, after struggling to open it thanks to his hollow fingers, he drops the vial and melts a hole in the floor, sending him plummeting down below. He somehow manages to get back up and, when Clover is about to leave the Steamworks, Axis shuts the door on them as he prepares to fight them. However, as Clover is currently unarmed, Axis hands them a trashcan lid to count as a "drawn weapon", making them a threat which he can target. He is surprised when Clover uses the lid to block his attacks, angering Axis as his power is drained by Clover provoking him into using powerful attacks which are redirected back at him. Axis can also be defeated by simply attacking him regularly.

If fought via violent methods, Axis will realise that he's received critical damage and needs emergency repairs. He calls out to Chujin in desperation, which falls on deaf ears as he slowly powers down and dies. If killed when his Spare conditions are met, Axis will be shocked and confused by Clover's betrayal and calls out to Chujin once again, only to die with no response.

If depowered peacefully, Axis's murderous programming would be turned off and he wonders what he'll do since he can't attack anymore. Clover will then begin to compliment him, causing Axis to be refuelled by his happiness. After he's spared, Axis will apologise for his hostile behaviour, stating that unlike humans and monsters, he's made to follow his programming and bots like him are just versions of single model lines. He notes that while the Steamworks are in disrepair, the dysfunctional robots in here are free to be as flawed as they please and thus Axis asks Clover not to bring any more humans here, stating that he wants his comrades to be safe. As his battery reaches extremely low levels, Axis leaves to recharge, but not before adding Clover to his list of authorised visitors and asking them to leave the power on, saying he likes living. Afterwards, Axis can be re-encountered as an NPC at the Steamworks' entrance. He will also send a latter to Clover later on.

If the Pacifist Route was aborted by killing Axis, Ceroba would be enraged and angrily leave Clover thanks to their soul now being impure. Conversely, if the Genocide Route is aborted by sparing Axis, he will be confused by this mercy and say Clover still sucks for all their crimes, asking the human to trip and die.

Pacifist Route[]

The first encounter with Axis in this route plays out similarly to the Neutral Route, only this time Ceroba protests against Axis arresting her and Clover as this used to be Chujin's old workplace. Axis perks up when he hears his creator's name but, seeing as Chujin is nowhere to be seen, Axis sends the two falling into the storage room. Ceroba will warn Clover not to go out the door nearby, sighing in exasperation if Axis catches them. The duo build a robot decoy and escape through a vent, continuing their journey.

Axis's second encounter plays out similarly, though when Clover is captured he announces that he'll go and capture Ceroba too. When Axis bumps into the servers, Clover and Ceroba hide in two nearby lockers, bewildering him as he leaves to find them. Later on, after ambushing the duo and cornering them, Ceroba would present Axis the robot she and Clover created as a friend, only for Axis to tell her he's not interested and fire his attack. Ceroban parries it and, like in the Neutral Route, Axis is forced to retreat and swap out his damaged hands.

Unlike the Neutral Route, Axis is encountered in a furnace room after Ceroba and Clover sort out packages to obtain passwords to unlock the doors. When he goes in to attack, Axis accidentally trips over a wire and disconnects the power, letting Ceroba and Clover hide in the darkness. While the duo reignite the furnaces, Axis activates his flashlight to search for them, which unfortunately costs so much power his typography box is limited to 15 characters. When Ceroba and Clover successfully restore the power. Axis finds them and confronts the two. Fortunately, Ceroba quickly convinces the dimwitted robot that she's just talking casually with no intention of stalling his mission and asks why the Steamworks doors are unlocked either by ID or password, which Axis replies is simply due to two-step verification. Satisfied but a little disappointed by the answer, Ceroba leaves with Clover, leaving Axis still confused on what happened.

Just like in the Neutral Route, Axis slams the door on Clover as they try to leave, locking Ceroba out of the room they and Axis are battling in. As such, while Axis fights Clover, Ceroba gets to work busting down the door with her magic. In the Pacifist fight, Axis brings in two generators to keep himself powered, which Clover must deflect attacks into to progress the fight. Ceroba busts in just in time for Clover to reflect one final attack and drain Axis's energy. With his murderous instincts shut down to save power, Axis feels lost as to what to do until Ceroba presents Clover's robot to him, causing him to become infatuated and recharged by his love alone. As Axis's remarks on the robot become more suggestive, Clover spares him and the robot gets up and leaves, but not before asking Ceroba to tell Chujin Axis misses him, which Ceroba tearfully promises to do.

Afterwards, Axis can be found as an NPC at the Steamworks's beginning like in the Neutral Route, only this time with the robot at his side, who he has christened Daisy. It's shown that he's planning on having a family with Daisy, and in the credits scene can be seen taking a romantic gondola ride with them.

Genocide Route[]

Just like in the other two routes, Axis initially attempts to apprehend Clover, recalling his fight with the previous human upon scanning them. After realising Clover's threat level is at a maximum of 10, Axis tries to explain to them that the other 5 humans are already dead but notices that Clover probably already realised it by now. He remarks on how monsters and humans both thirst for each others' souls and, assuming Clover to be doing the same, Axis attacks them. Unfortunately, Clover responds by barraging Axis with bullets, badly damaging his face and slamming him into a wall. Axis realises he's out of his league and escapes through the trapdoor, going off to warn the other robots.

From there, the roles between Axis and Clover are reversed, with the robot being pursued instead. Axis is briefly seen in the Greenhouse ordering Guardener to stay put and hide, which she does so upon noticing Clover. Upon reaching the locked door, Axis calls from the other side, persuading Clover to give up and that he can explain everything. Clover shoots at the door but as it doesn't budge, Axis proclaims that brute force won't solve anything and that the bots of the Steamworks are survivors.

The final encounter with Axis begins in the room his boss fight occurs in, where he tells Clover that while he was only able to evacuate a few, he's glad knowing Clover leaves unsatisfied. Deciding to not run without a fight, Axis uses the trashcan lid as a shield to delfect Clover's attacks instead, stalling them throughout the fight. On the last turn, Axis tries to explain to Clover that the death of the previous human wasn't his choice and he was forced by his programming to commit the deed. Clover however, is completely fixated on the fact that the human was killed, enraging them so much their LV increases all the way to 19, allowing them to blast through Axis's shield. Axis begs for mercy, exclaiming that he didn't want to kill the human but his pleas fall on deaf ears as Clover blasts him, rending him to nothing but scrap metal.

Trivia[]

  • Based on his Neutral Route NPC dialogue, Axis keeps an e-diary, blushes light gray and has to scan people to remember them.
    • His Pacifist dialogue also reveals he can be fuelled by love alone and that he's worried his future children may get lost in the Steamworks.
  • The letter sent by Axis to Clover is typed in binary, which when decoded reads "I DO NOT KNOW HOW TO SEND LETTERS. HELP ME."
  • Axis doesn't have exclamation marks in his typography set and can't count to one million. He also seems to have a profanity filter which censors out his vulgarities.
  • The first model of Axis was presented to Asgore on March 19, referencing the birthday of the fangame's director and one of its lead musicians, MasterSwordRemix.
  • Axis's speech upon being spared in the Neutral Route is the only time where the track "094: The Freedom To Be Flawed" plays in the entire game.
  • Axis is the only robot to give EXP when killed, referencing his murder of the human with the soul of Integrity.
