Black Mage and Bruiser are the main protagonists of the Smashbits series, Counterspell.
Biography[]
Black Mage and Bruiser were a pair of dungeon bosses alongside a Red Mage. They have dealt with heroes before, but the latest set were plowing through their defences like nothing. This got Black Mage in a panic as he realizes how close the heroes are to reaching them and realized how likely they are to die.
Red Mage assures his partner that they will win, but not only is Black Mage not convince, Bruiser agrees with him on these heroes being different. Eventually, Black Mage retreats, not wanting to die. Bruiser picks him up to join him, leaving Red Mage to fight the heroes and die alone.
Eventually, they arrive in a town with an armory, and Black Mage decides they should get some weapons to better defend themselves. They try to convince the smithy that they are heroes in hopes of getting free stuff, but the smithy informs them that not only does he charge everybody, but also that he can tell they are monsters, telling them to pay or leave. Annoyed, Black Mage suggests Bruiser hold the old man down so that they can rob him, prompting the smithy to pull a sword out on them. Before he could strike though, Bruiser punches him and kills him in one hit due to him being old and feeble. Seeing how killing the old man got Bruiser xp, Black Mage suggests he continue punching people to level up before the two of them loot the shop.
They are then surrounded by the townsfolk who get ready to attack them before a world boss invades the town and devours everybody sans Black Mage and Bruiser. Black Mage thanks the monster for eating everybody else before he and Bruiser are visited by a thief named Lady Shiv who offers to serve as a bodyguard for them.
Black Mage is sceptible, but Bruiser hires her. As they sleep after looting the rest of the town, Shiv makes off with all the stuff they stole, prompting the duo to hunt her down and get it back. When she sees how determined they are to get the stuff she stole from them, she attempts to offer them a mega phoenix down in an effort to keep them from punching her head off, only for bruiser to make her drop it which inadverantly revives Red Mage as a Wraith.
They eventually reach the castle of Dragon Prince Dagara who welcomes them in when they explain how they are on the run from heroes. However, Black Mage realizes that the heroes are still coming for them and that they have nowhere left to run. Shiv and Bruiser encourage Black Mage that they can win, prompting duo to get ready to fight the heroes they were running from, emerging victorious afterward.
However, their celebration is cut short when Dagara awakens Dredge who flies off to destroy the world crystal and plunge the world into darkness.
