Blutsaugers are supernatural creatures that exist in the dark fantasy Countryhumans Wattpad fanfiction The Full Moon Hangs Above and its animated adaptation. They are a vampiric species with avian features originated from their progenitor whose real name is kept secret, but goes by the alias, Himmel (German for "Heaven"). While they serve as the major antagonistic force of the series, there are Blutsaugers with heroic qualities and standards, with the best known heroic example being Siegfried.
Appearance and Behavior[]
One of the Blutsaugers' known traits are their sharp black claws and long tongues. However, they are not your usual mainstream depiction of vampire. Having rows of sharp teeth instead of just fangs, feathered black wings because of their association with black eagles instead of bats, being immune to sunlight, and can eat normal food because they don't need to drink blood to survive. If their powers weaken during the night, that's the only time they'll feel thirst because they only use blood as their "fuel" to strengthen themselves. And unlike normal vampires, Blutsaugers can be good or evil.
Unlike how most Blutsaugers are usually described, majority of Blutsaugers are now limited from using their magic in combat and depend more on weapons to retain themselves from drinking blood. However, this does not stop them from being still viewed as hostile creatures, as there are few exceptions, with Arnulf von Wagenheim being the most infamous example.
Some humans form a close relationship and work under them by forming a contract. To make a contract, the human must trade something to the contracted Blutsauger, usually their blood, but can be anything else in Beatrice's case. Those who made a contract with a Blutsauger will have a mark on their chest that can only be seen by other Blutsaugers or people that have made a contract with them, the mark varies on the rank of the Blutsauger they made a contract with. To seal the contract, the Blutsauger has to bite their contractor's right hand.
Albrecht Häussermann, who had a contract with a Blutsauger before when he was Austria-Hungary, namely Anton von Wagenheim, said that there are still Blutsaugers practicing this today.
Subspecies[]
Stray[]
Strays are formerly humans who drank blood of pure-blood Blutsaugers out of curiosity, or have selfish desires of becoming powerful. Because of this, Blutsaugers view them as a shame of their species. They appear to have glowing red eyes. Although they have weak magic, they are the most dangerous type of Blutsaugers to humans because they only depend on blood and are impossible to control unlike the regular Blutsauger. They are afraid of sunlight (which is unusual for a Blutsauger), so they hide in the dark and only come out at night.
History[]
The real origins of Blutsaugers are unknown. However, several years after the dissolution of the Holy Roman Empire, Blutsaugers came to existence in the year 1819. The first known Blutsauger goes under the name "Himmel", who goes on different human disguises and wanders in the night. He encounters a couple and offers them two vials of blood (which are actually his own), claiming they are medicine that will turn them into vampires and gain eternal youth. The couple thought this was a joke at first, but they accepted the offer anyway. Himmel mixed the blood with water and poured them into two glasses, the couple then drank the liquid which leads to their transformation. After that, Himmel told them he will teach them how to use their powers later when he comes back in the next night because he is searching for more people who are seeking eternal youth. He encounters Werner and Luise after that but more will be explored later.
When the Blutsaugers became widespread in Germany and Austria, it resulted in several attempted mass murders of humans caused by Strays and Blutsaugers who abused their powers. Because of this, humans started hunting them for sport, especially the innocent ones.
At the end of the Blutsauger huntings of the 19th century, 10 Blutsaugers survived, they were called by Himmel to gather in a forest so he can choose the good Blutsaugers who can enter his dimension, while those who violated the rules of the Blutsauger will be exterminated (The rule most of the exterminated survivors broke were they shouldn't attack innocent humans). 4 were chosen and they formed a group called the "Cherubim".
Since hunting Blutsaugers for sport got completely abolished for good, Blutsaugers can now repopulate as long as they won't attack innocent humans.
