Randall Jasper Boggs, simply dubbed as Boggs, is the main antagonist of the Monsters Inc. live-action reboots. He is the secondary antagonist of the 2022 Fantech fanmade film Monsters Inc., the second fanfilm from the Pixar Fanverse, and of it's sequel Monsters Inc. 2 and will return in the fanmade live-action TV show Monsters Inc: Business. He will also appear as the titular main protagonist of the prequel series Boggs.
He is a lizard-like monster who can imitate human forms and a master of trickery who is in league with John Waternoose Junior. After being betrayed by his own boss, planning to keep Boo for himself and have his revenge on Sulley, Mike, Boo and Waternoose, he was ultimately defeated by Sulley, believed to be dead. However, he found himself in the human world after his fall, almost being beaten up by a man with a broomstick.
He then spotted Sulley and Mike in Los Angeles, planning to have his revenge on them both and later aiding Mr. Nigels with his conspiracy.
He is portrayed by Jake Gyllenhaal, as seen in his human form.
History[]
Boggs is the sadistic, heavily ambitious, power-mad and ruthless right-hand man of Waternoose in his evil scheme to kidnap and exterminate Boo by using a machine called the scream extractor and using it to extract her voice for more electricity.
He was unaware of Waternoose's endgame however. Neverless, he was a sadistic, monstrous psycopath who acted both as a conspirator and a scarer, and he enjoyed both titles.
He also had the ambition of becoming the top scarer instead of Sulley, and even disposing him later on.
Boggs at first attempts to use the machine on a little girl named Janice Wilcock. However, she escaped him. After that, he went to the scaring competition to impress Waternoose and the entire factory and city. However, Sulley once again won, as he angrily yelled at his right-hand man and large assistant Fungus.
Boggs was later ordered by the manipulative Waternoose to capture Boo, as they've both known that Janice was disguised as the monster youngling Boo, and was with Sulley and Mike. Boggs then followed Mike and he disguised himself as a human to gather Mike's attention, before grabbing him and threatening him that he shall suffer if he does not bring Boo to him.
Boggs then captured Mike for his failure, and he took Mike to be tested with the Scream Extractor. He revealed to Mike that his plans are to enslave all the workers of the company together with Waternoose, and that the machine terminates children and creates electricity from their screams, as 4 children were already killed because of it.
However, Sulley and Boo manage to rescue Mike from Boggs, and the trio go to explain matters to Waternoose. Waternoose however reveals his true colors and that he was Randall's boss as well as the scheme's main mastermind, and that their purpose is to cover up Waternoose's past crimes, as he has killed his own father. Waternoose was careless of Sulley or anyone else in truth, and Boggs then banishes Sulley and Mike to The Himalayas, just like Waternoose banished The Yeti and sent his father to freeze there to death.
Back inside the lab of the factory, Boggs tests the machine on Boo once again. He asks Waternoose if he ever cared for Sulley. Waternoose reveals that it was all merely a ploy and manipulation so he could use Sulley for his own ends.
Waternoose then betrayed Boggs by calling Agent Monus of the CDA in and manipulating him into wrongfully arresting Boggs. Waternoose however tells Boggs that if he passes Boo to him they can settle down as Boggs shall escape justice. Boggs out of anger and lust for power and need to kill Boo himself disagrees. He declares himself as the rightful owner of Monsters Incorporated and as Sulley comes to rescue Boo, thus knocking Monus out, Boggs escapes all of them with Boo held as his captive.
Boggs follows Sulley and Mike, and he lunges onto a door, as it moves upwards along with Boggs and Boo. Sulley and Mike manage to follow Boo and Boggs, but when Sulley enters a door and finds Boo, Boggs lunges at him from the celling and kicks him so he will hold on to the door or else he will fall to his doom. Boggs taunts Sulley for being the number one scarer and kicks him again, thus making him almost fall down. He sarcastically promises to teach the kid a good lesson. However, Boo rises up and smacks him multiple times with a stick, as Sulley gains the upper hand and Boggs holds onto the door instead of him. Boggs cowardly begs Boo not to smack him again so he won't fall. Sulley however remarks that she was never afraid of him, and Boo once again smacks Boggs, causing him to fall to his presumed demise before he continues falling into the human world.
Monsters Inc. 2[]
Boggs fell into a house which belongs to a poor guy with a broomstick who is obsessed with a clean house. The man finds Boggs and thinking that he's a giant alligator, he runs after him with intent to kill the monster.
Boggs eventually escapes from his wrath. He finds Sulley, Mike and Janice Wilcock (now grown up) near the city center of LA, trying to get his revenge on them. However, Sulley picks him up and throws him into an object which explodes on him.
Boggs then disguises himself as a bounty hunter called Randy Viton, pretending to search for Sulley and Mike and negotiating about them with Mr. Nigels. He spies after them and finds out in his human form that they've escaped from the cell. Mr. Nigels however receives from "Randy" a report and eventually reaches Sulley and Boo, confronting them with dozens of mercenaries.
Meanwhile, Boggs finds Mike and Selina while they were rescuing all of Mr. Nigels' monster prisoners. He turns back into the monstrous Boggs, and has his final duel with Mike. Almost eating Mike alive, Selina reveals that she brought a "gift", which was actually the old man who tried to beat Boggs with a broomstick. Boggs runs away from him, hoping not to die or be beaten hard.
Personality[]
Boggs was wicked, ruthless and power hungry. He only wanted to take Sulley's title as the top scarer all the time, and he aided Waternoose in his plot to kidnap and kill innocent human children. Boggs was more of a brutal sadist than his boss, and he was just as influential as Waternoose. He was shown to be much of a coward near the end, when he begged Boo not to kill him.
Trivia[]
- He is based on Randall Boggs from the original animated movie.
- Despite not being as evil as Waternoose and being the Big Bad narritive or the most evil threat in the movie, Boggs still had the most screentime and he directly influenced the plot just as much as Waternoose did.
- Also, despite being the main antagonist of the Monsters Inc. saga, he is beneath Waternoose and Mr. Nigels, taking a more direct role but far less threatening then both of them.
- The original version of Boggs was going to be redeemed, but they cancelled the movie in which it was supposed to happen. This version continues his journey during the aftermath of the original story, but he is still a villain at large.
