The Brotherhood of the Abyss are one of the main antagonists of the Multiversal Legends mythos. They are a cult-like nihilistic sect led by the mysterious Madman to aid him in his quest to kill all life in the omniverse. They were founded on Earth when Madman began manipulating others in joining his twisted cause and gained genetic and technorganic modification through his experiments.
They are comprised of enhanced soldiers, anarchists, cultists, fanatics, and monsters designed by the Madman and they serve him loyally. They're a recurring threat to the Champions, especially towards Zayne "Akuma" Wilson. They also function as a killer-for-hire mercenary group for other evil organizations if Madman so wishes, with Johnny Nowhere also serving as a member and servant for Madman. Other supervillains have joined this group to indulge in murder, terror, and the prospect of ending worlds for their lust for destruction. They named themselves after the entity of the same name, as tribute and for the goal they seek to achieve.
History[]
The group was founded in an abandoned subway station located in Brooklyn, where Madman uses his charismatic manipulation to gather pawns for him to carry out a series of grisly torture-murders with the prospect of freeing the world of moral restriction. Their numbers grew, as Madman recruited the mad scientist Doctor Judai to their organization, so that they could use his wealth and resources to enhance their troops and set up facilities. Madman uses the ultra-technology, ones much akin to an Champion, to strengthen his army.
Soon, Madman began experiments giving his army enhanced powers and equipment, turning them into technologically enhanced supervillains. He also began creating monsters in his hidden lab, often using human test subjects to learn how to transmute, mutate, and even combine DNA between different organisms. He motivates his followers to perform crimes from kidnapping, arson, vandalism, torture and murder to carryout acts of terrorism on a whim. Especially record every murder they carryout, every torture they perform so he doesn't miss out on the fun.
To help his goal come to fruition, he joins up with a crime syndicate calling themselves the Dark Legion, led by a man named Rogue, where they help his research in making monsters for both their armies. There, Madman began a personal project for himself, seeking to make a lifeform capable of destroying worlds at a time as part of his plans for omniversal omnicide. The Brotherhood would gather DNA of human and dragon, specifically "Enhancers" (humans with superpowers) to create a hybrid dragonoid being, thus leading to the birth of a child called "Galaxis".
