Queen Brotonia, falsely known as Empress Twilight Sparkle for most of the story, is the main antagonist of GashibokA's My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic/Doctor Who fan comic Recall the Time of No Return. One thousand years in the future, she is the queen of the Crimson Changelings, also called Zygons or Zygon ponies. After imprisoning the real Empress Twilight Sparkle in a cocoon during the war between Equestria and the Crimson Changelings, she impersonated Twilight Sparkle for years and became the tyrannical ruler of Equestria, with genocidal intentions.
Personality[]
Queen Brotonia, in her false persona of Twilight Sparkle, puts on a veneer of respectability, but often breaks the veneer and casually insults and belittles others, including Fluttershy and Rarity, and mocks Spike. She pretends that she is an extremist who will do whatever is necessary to stop the Crimson Changelings and help the needs of the many, but actually does the exact opposite. She prefers her iron wolves to do the act of killing.
Brotonia believes sentimentality is "disgusting". She rejects the concept of friendship.
While displaying her true personality, she often has a slasher-like smile and very-wide eyes. She brags about how powerful she is and is clearly unhinged, unlike her façade of calm as fake Twilight Sparkle. She does not care about mass collateral damage when firing a large energy beam at Twilight.
Biography[]
Nearly 1000 years into the future, Queen Brotonia, with her Zygons, went to war against Equestria. She pretended to lose the war, but imprisoned Empress Twilight Sparkle and her apprentice Sterling inside cocoons and used their magic to charge her "magic battery" to use their magic herself. Brotonia took on the appearance of Twilight and ruled Equestria in her place with an iron fist. She pretended to be an extremist who executed ponies under the pretense of suspicion that they were Zygons in disguise. Brotonia secretly kept an underground facility of Zygons herself, with the intention of replacing ponies with false ponies. She executed ponies who opposed her or sent them to "reformation centers" to be switched with compliant Zygons taking their appearance.
A rebellion, led by Spike, formed against the tyrannical rule of "Twilight Sparkle". In addition to future Spike, a young adult Alicorn named Gold Lily, who was sisters with Sterling, joined the Resistance.
When Doctor Hooves, his assistant Roseluck, and the Mane Six (sans Twilight) showed up in this future through time travel, Fluttershy, Rarity, Roseluck, and Hooves got separated from the others and captured. They were brought from the dungeons to meet with Brotonia-as-Twilight. Fake-Twilight put on a friendly face but couldn't help insulting the appearance of Rarity when she would be old. She told Rarity and Fluttershy that the Resistance wanted to kill them in order so Twilight would die, to fulfill the prophecy "Twilight will not outlive her friends." (Spike later didn't deny this thought but wanted to find an alternative.) Doctor Hooves revealed that fake-Twilight put sleeping pills in their food. When she called friendship "disgusting", Fluttershy punched her in the face. She then ordered an iron wolf to kill a soldier as payback and blamed Fluttershy. The captives were taken to the Zygon cocoon room so they could also be preserved.
Spike asked fake-Twilight why she took out Sterling and wanted to do the same to Gold Lily. Fake-Twilight told Spike that "the potential of young Alicorns is dangerous, so it would be safe to remove them early". This enraged Spike and he grew gigantic, but Brotonia defeated him off-page.
The captives escaped and found Gold Lily, who used her Alicorn magic to open up the cocoon and free the real Twilight. Empress Twilight showed up to fight, causing Brotonia to drop the disguise. She reverted to her true Zygon pony form but kept the appearance of Twilight's face. They engaged in a fight while Gold Lily rescued Sterling. Brotonia used her magic battery to fight Twilight. Brotonia used immense magical energy and fired a huge beam at Twilight, with Ponyville in its path. Twilight managed to block it with shield magic but was overwhelmed. Twilight used her remaining magical energy to collide with the magic battery's. This caused an explosion which killed Brotonia and blinded Twilight while leaving the latter in a dying state. Twilight died a day later.
Powers and Abilities[]
- Leadership and intimidation: Brotonia ruled Equestria for seven years under the false identity of Empress Twilight Sparkle. She killed any soldier who failed her and successfully got them to do as she said, despite being crueler than Twilight Sparkle, who they all believed her to be.
- Shapeshifting: As a Zygon, she can change her appearance and voice to impersonate others and chooses to impersonate Twilight Sparkle.
- Flight: She has wings she can use to fly fast.
- Fighting skills: She defeated Spike's gigantic dragon form off-page and fought against Twilight Sparkle, managing to take Twilight down with her as she was defeated.
- Magic: She can shoot large magical beams which damaged Twilight and took away her strength to fight, while almost obliterating Ponyville.
- Magic battery: This device gives her the power to use the magic of Alicorns as her own.
Trivia[]
- She is based off Broton from Doctor Who, who is the leader of a group of Zygons.
