Calamity, otherwise known as 'Cal' for short, is one of the two leaders of the Black Purveyors alongside their partner-in-crime Touch. They are a mute former petty thief with a highly mysterious background and a reputation that precedes them. They are almost considered a legend by many, as unlike their partner, they are very rarely publicly sighted and remain completely hidden from the eyes of The Overlook.

History[]

Early life[]

It is not exactly known where Calamity came from, who their parents might've been or what their childhood may have been like. The earliest report of them that is known is when they inexplicably appeared on Irexis and the lower blocks of Viya with seemingly no explanation. Various residents took note of them, only labelling them as the 'mute kid', and they eventually seemed to fall in with some of the Junkers, collecting scrap from The Waste to sell for profit.

Calamity didn't have any real friends however, and would usually travel to the Wastes by their lonesome and were commonly the subject of ridicule and harassment by more prominent Junkers, such as Linus. Calamity was also homeless, having resided within a sewer pipe hidden away from other people. One day, Linus would participate in a trade deal between him and another prominent Junker from another Block, trading a valuable bag of diamonds recovered from the Wastes over the course of several years for money.

However, Calamity would spoil the deal by stealing Linus' bag of diamonds and running. Linus and his men would attempt to chase after them, but they managed to get away. Naturally, Linus was furious and Calamity had to remain in hiding or otherwise suffer potentially life threatening consequences.

However, during one of their last trips to the Wastes, they would end up uncovering a laser pistol. Although it was damaged, Calamity was able to fix it themselves. During one of their nights residing in the sewers, they happen to come across Vivienne LeSandro, who had been wandering the sewers to get away from everything. She would vent to them, and they would come to learn that she had what she referred to as a 'complete calamity' of a day.

She remarks that the sewers which Calamity had called home were a calamity, thus earning them their namesake. It was after this moment that Vivienne and Calamity would start to hang out more often, usually in the sewers, and Calamity would be introduced to Vivienne's two friends; Abel and Toko. It is unclear how exactly, but Calamity would somehow communicate with Vivienne and her friends without the use of words.

At some point, Vivienne would come to learn of the trouble that Calamity was in, the diamonds that they had stolen and the gun they had found. Although at first this information stressed her out, Calamity would somehow know of Vivienne's troubles with Linus and concoct a plan to deal with him together. Calamity got Vivienne to contact Linus and organise a meet-up at the Wastes so that Linus can get his diamonds back without any further issue and she can come back with the money she owes. But Linus must come alone so as to not attract other thieves.

Linus would agree, and later that night, the pair arrived with what they owed to Linus. However instead of giving him what he came for straight away, they offered an ultimatum. They give him the merchandise and he no longer forces them to pay a cut for the scrap they find and sell. Linus finds this laughable, and finds it insulting that they believed they had the authority to tell him what to do. When Calamity and Vivienne find that their deal isn't going to work, as expected, Vivienne promptly pulls out the laser pistol and executes Linus with it.

They then bury Linus' body amongst the garbage in the Wastes, and no one ever knew they were the ones behind his murder. Then, it was onto figuring out a plan to get off the planet. They needed a ship, but they could not afford one and ships could only be bought from the Highlands, were they were forbidden to Lowlanders like themselves. So Calamity did some 'research', traversed to the Highlands and stalked the owner of the shop.

They would find where the man lives, who their family are, and more specifically what their children looked like. They then were able to set up cameras at the kids schools, and when they and Vivienne confronted the shop owner, they showed him live footage of his children. This was enough to get him to bend the knee, and the pair were able to acquire a ship, which they first took to the Outlands. They then brought Toko and Abel to come with them, although they were a little apprehensive and sceptical of the whole thing.

Just as they were about to board, they were caught by Police Chief Whistershire alongside three other officers. As they were being arrested, Calamity and Vivienne would pull guns from their waistbands and quickly execute the other three officers. Vivienne would incapacitate Whistershire by shooting him in the spine, and would speak to him with a gun held up to his head. Vivienne decided not to kill him however, instead allowing Calamity the honours. Whistershire tried to beg for his life, but Calamity simply shushed him before firing a bullet through his skull.

The group would then board the ship and finally take-off from the planet.

New opportunities[]

The group would arrive on a new planet, Tresz, and would end up wandering the seemingly empty deserts of Old Goznia. Unbeknownst to them however, the area was strictly prohibited to the general public, and they would end up being apprehended by a group of Shardsmen. They are brought to the Ground Monitor, and questioned by the ships advisor William Tangren. It was determined that they were not of this planet, and were trespassing in the desert, which was strictly off limits to the general public.

However instead of facing a usual penalty, Vivienne would be able to convince William to allow them to work for him in some way. William would accept, and they would be assigned the task of retrieving a sample of Black Shard Crystals that had been stolen and taken to Pytilo. The group were equipped with the necessary tools to track the sample, and once they arrived, were able to find what they were looking for, hidden away in a small underground bunker.

After demonstrating their effectiveness, they would end up working for Tangren more often. That was until eventually, Calamity would happen to discover Regenerite whilst on the planet Yuvin. They found that this material could regenerate not only itself, but could also regenerate biological matter. There was only a certain amount of it, seeming to be quite rarely naturally produced, by Calamity also believed that they could find a way to replicate it.

Believing that they may have discovered something revolutionary, they and Vivienne took their findings directly to the monarch of New Goznia, King Goodwin. They wanted funding to be able to continue research into, not only this material, but also perhaps discover other similar materials in the galaxy and sell them for a huge profit which the King could receive a cut of.

Thus, the Black Purveyors were formed.

The Black Purveyors[]

The Black Purveyors quickly became very profitable and influential, with their business increasing the number of superhumans in the galaxy and elevating their status and reputation to a higher level. With VIRs awareness that they were the ones responsible for the superhuman outbreak, Calamity knew that it was important to keep a low profile. Not only was King Goodwins involvement concealed, but they had decided to completely conceal their whereabouts.

Calamity would come to learn that another superhuman on Yuvin, known as Baby Man, had the skillset required to make them 'disappear'. They had almost completely vanished from all of the galaxies databases, but their names were still known. Calamity in particular was considered a legend by some, as unlike Vivienne, who would be sighted in public during daring heists, Calamity mainly isolate themself within a solitary base of operations, only coming out whenever they were needed for a business transaction.

Currently, it is known that Calamity has been focussing their efforts on some kind of 'personal project' which utilises Regenerite. Although it's not currently known what this project consists of, it is most commonly believed to be some kind of super weapon that Calamity intends to use for 'something big'.

Appearance[]

Calamity is a 38 year old black person with a relatively thin build and a short dreadlock hairstyle that covers their crimson red eyes. It is unclear what Calamity's gender may be, as records gathered from The Overlooks database, as well as other sources, vary in terms of how Calamity is referred to by pronouns. It is entirely possible that the method in which we collect our data has interfered with the information gathering process and created unclear information, although it is also possible that Calamity's gender is ambiguous in their own universe.

Personality[]

The most notable aspect of Calamity's character is the fact that they almost never speak. Contrary to what most believe, this does not seem to be the result of a medical condition of any kind and may be in fact an intentional trait that they have decided to inhabit. It may be possible that Calamity chooses not to speak as a form of intimidation, to remain unpredictable so that any potential enemies are unable to predict their actions.

Trivia[]

  • The original Calamity was a character created by Silentone432 as a major antagonist in the Silverse. They were a thief turned tyrant who would g on to design Silent. Calamity was later made public domain, alongside Silent, Vance and Shattered.
