Captain Toadlip, also simply known as Toadlip, is one of two secondary antagonists (alongside the Goblin Queen) in The Princess and the Goblin. He is the second-born son of the Goblin King and the Goblin Queen and the younger brother, bodyguard and right-hand of Prince Froglip, serving as the captain, enforcer and natural leader of the goblin army, though his bumbling behavior often prevents him from being much help. He is voiced by Joey Camen.
Appearance and characteristics[]
Toadlip is a large, obese, younger goblin with a bald head, tea green skin, broad shoulders, a snub nose, three toad-like bumps on the left side of his chin and a stout body. He is slightly shorter than Froglip. Like all goblins, Toadlip has a much more durable body than humans; swords bend when striking his body and his head is powerful enough to shatter solid stone. However, like his older brother Froglip, Toadlip is a surprisingly skilled swimmer and is able to resist strong currents better than most individuals. However, like all goblins, Toadlip's feet are the only place on his body that can be hurt and happy human songs causes him agony.
Personality[]
Captain Toadlip is portrayed as a maniacal, fiendish, efficient and brutish yet idiotic and simple-minded goblin captain of the guard who is extremely devoted and loyal to his older brother Prince Froglip, calling him "Big Brother Prince Froglip" or "Big Brother", and sometimes, terrified of him. Like all goblins, he expresses a desire to gain revenge on the sun people, the goblin name for humans, for forcing goblins to live underground. He greatly admires his older brother for his plans and is a sort of bungler, though Prince Froglip still kept him as his right-hand man. Because of this, he often annoys his older brother and often finds himself facing the latter's wrath. While Toadlip clearly fears Froglip, mostly as a result of his dangerous temper, he has shown to be outrageously loyal, to the point of unabashedly jumping into action to protect his older brother at all costs. Froglip seems to be the idol of his younger brother, as he sometimes tries to imitate him. Aside from his loyalty and close bond with Froglip, Toadlip has shown to support the idea, for the "health and happiness" of his older brother. Though, he is also prone to having panic attacks and fearing Prince Froglip will pummel him for his failures and incompetence.
Toadlip is also a bit more violent and brutal than his older brother, as seen when he planned to hit Curdie with his spiked mace in order to make him suffer as other goblins have, only to be stopped by Prince Froglip, who wanted to make sure that Curdie will lead him and his brother to the room where Princess Irene is. In contrast to his cruel, xenophobic, older brother, he is comically timid, attentive, happy-go-lucky, frolicsome and less churlish and does have some morals as when it comes to abducting the princess but becomes more aiding to Prince Froglip.
