Rivales found out his nephew hadn't killed Luciano... That was why. Mendirez, being the coward he is, panicked and sicked his dog Gallante on them both. But the dog only succeeded in killing one...
~ Luciano as "Dreisan" confirming that Fransisco Mendirez was the mastermind behind the Gallante killings.
Hmm... Well, this is no good. How simply... dreadful.
~ Morton Dreisan revealing his true colors

Carlo Luciano, also known as Morton Dreisan as his cover persona is the main antagonist of Ace Attorney: Conflict of Interest. He debutted in Turnabout on the Web as a police coroner and despite having a distasteful sense of humor, appeared to have a kind heart. He is however a sadistic former assassin of the Rivales Family who faked his death after Michael Rivales planned to have him killed for attempting to wipe out the Cadaverinis. He's the mastermind behind the events that took place after Michael Rivales' death.

History[]

Prior to the events of Conflict of Interest, he served as the hired assassin of the Rivales Family. He was known as the one-eyed assassin due to having a scratched left eye. Throughout his career it is confirmed that he killed at least 7 people. Two notable victims are Sandra Watters and Charles Locke. It is revealed by Sarah Keyes who is Charles Locke's daughter that Carlo Luciano murdered Charles Locke right in front of her when she was younger.

At one point he and Fransisco Mendirez planned to take out the Cadaverinis. When he got caught this angered Michael Rivales as he did not want a gang war between them to ensue. When the order to kill Carlo Luciano was out, he and Mendirez devised a plan to fake his death and get Mendirez off the hook. He, Mendirez, Nathen Togamera, and Kristoph Gavin all conspired in a plan to have the crime scene set at a diner. Pearl Fey who was planning on running away from the Fey Clan was set up as a witness to the event in order for a fake kidnapping plot to be set as a result of the crime. Nathen Togamera would forge a bottle with Salim Kushari's fingerprints on it in order to clear Mendirez's name. They swapped Carlo Luciano with a dead body double in order for the police to be convinced he had died. Kristoph Gavin would be the one to defend Fransisco Mendirez and get him off the hook for the murder and convict Salim Kushari who was an innocent man. The case would later be known as the MN-6 Incident.

After MN-6, Carlo Luciano adopted a new persona named "Morton Dreisan" and became a coroner. Months after the incident he performed an autopsy on "Carlo Luciano" and eventually burned the body so no one could tell it was a fake.

When Michael Rivales found out that Carlo Luciano was still alive, Fransisco Mendirez made the careless move to use Sir Gallante to try to kill Carlo Luciano. Furious by this, Carlo Luciano took action and waited for Michael Rivales to be murdered by Sir Gallante so he could usurp the throne of the mob. Then he made Fransisco Mendirez pretend to be the leader of the mob as he called most of the shots in the shadows. By doing this he would be able to frame Mendirez for every wrongdoing he made.

In Turnabout on the Web, he meets the protagonist Phoenix Wright and Maya Fey as "Morton Dreisan" who both were investigating into the murder of Walter Webb. After giving Mark Watters the autopsy report, he makes disturbing comments about the body being a specimen and jokes about the murder. This made Mark Watters want him to leave the room when he was done there. After he saw Cody Hackins who is a minor as a threat when he hacked into Stranger2Love which could expose the MN-6 plot, he lured him into the evidence room and without hesitation shot him three times in the back with Togamera's gun, killing him. He then informs Phoenix Wright about the murder in a panicked fashion and claims he "discovered" the body. He neglected to put the time on his autopsy report in order to put suspicion away from himself. To continue his revenge scheme against Mendirez, he made Togamera take the fall for the murder so he could turn against Mendirez when he would get the death penalty as a result of it.

Prior to Turnabout Consequences he set up a plan to get Maya assassinated by sending her letters threatening Pearl Fey should she ever come back. This provoked Maya even further to search for Pearl Fey and made her take on the interview with Gladys Porter to expose the letters. By doing this he would give "Fransisco Mendirez" a motive to kill Maya. He then ordered Raphael Donatello to kill Maya with a sniper and forced Meredith Fey to comply with Pearl Fey her granddaughter's life on the line. He also ordered Donatello to rat out Meredith Fey which would make him angry at Mendirez due to the lack of honor and eventually made him betray him. During the investigation into the attempted murder of Maya, he helps Phoenix Wright and Pearl Fey with information relating the assassination attempt. He casually made jokes about the incident which angered Pearl prompting her to punch him a couple of times.

As revenge for the attempt on his life he kidnapped Virgil Black, the man behind Sir Gallante from police custody and took him to his hideout. He then proceeded to strangle him to death with a shovel after stabbing him and buried his body underground. About a month later, when Steven Jameson got too close to expose the MN-6 incident, he proceeded to bludgeon him with the shovel so many times he was no longer visually recognizable. The police had to use his broken teeth to identify him after he was buried next to Virgil Black. During the investigation into the murders after the first trial, he helps Phoenix Wright by giving more information about the victims. On the same day, he chased down Gladys Porter into her office and stabbed her to death after realizing she had the bottle that was supposedly used to kill him in MN-6. He testifies about the first two murders in the second trial as the coroner of the case. While Trucy was investigating Luciano's death by visiting the morgue, Dreisan helped her with information relating to the kidnapping and the Rivales coverup from the incident. It's suggested that he suspected that she was onto Luciano implying she might've been the next target should they fail to catch him.

When it came time for Phoenix and Obadiah to face off against him, he initially denied all the accusations. After Trucy notices his scratched left eye through his glasses, he decides to pull a trap card where he made them expose Mendirez as the mastermind behind the Sir Gallante Killings while leaving proof of his own identity in the dark, cementing his revenge scheme. When Phoenix managed to corner him by making him a valid suspect for Cody Hackin's murder he proceeded to laugh maniacally and attempted to provoke Mark Watters. When all else failed he resorted to pulling a gun on his head and before attempting to escape the courtroom, he pointed a gun and Phoenix Wright pulled the trigger in attempt to kill him but was thwarted by Fransisco Mendirez who redirected the gun and knocked him out, leading for the one-eyed assassin to be put behind bars once and for all.

In one of the bad endings, it's implied he went out to kill Phoenix and the rest of the heroes should they fail to catch him in court. In another bad ending, he fatally shoots Fransisco Mendirez right before he snaps Luciano's neck, killing him.

Personality[]

"Morton Dreisan" is a ruthless and sadistic person that enjoyed claiming the lives of people. This makes him senseless enough to choose to kill people for any reason he needed or wanted. He also gains satisfaction for pure revenge whenever he feels wronged. He goes through any lengths to get revenge on others, even if it means destroying the lives of other people if it means his goal would be achieved. He's skilled and calculating, knowing how to use the situation to cover his tracks and leave no traces of himself behind. He's remorseless of his actions and even laughs and continues trying to kill people after his guilt is conclusively proven in court.

He had a twisted sense of humor, making cruel jokes about the deceased even when pretending to be on the side of the law. Unlike Togamera, he did a poor job at hiding his true identity, coming across as creepy and flippant, meaning he stuck out like a sore thumb compared to the more respectful and restrained law enforcement. He seemingly couldn't stop himself from being menacing, making thinly veiled threats to Trucy when she asked him questions, something she only missed because she didn't suspect him to begin with.
