I am no laughing matter, you fool. I am the embodiment of hatred itself. You should hate me, and I should hate you. In fact, I hate all of you, including everyone on this planet!
~ Hattan about his hatred of John.
You Hate Sinks f***ing suck! Your entire existence is to be unlikeable and hatable in which your lives are pointless and annoying! The world would be better without hate sinks like you!
~ Mega Jack Horner towards anyone who's a hate sink.
A degenerate who makes you want to throw up just from the fact that you're breathing the same air as her. That was the true identity of Kanade Otonokoji, a person whom we once thought as our friend, as our classmate.
~ Sora about Kanade Otonokoji.

Hate Sinks aka Despicable Baddies are characters who are purposely created to be despised by fans/the audience for their negative character traits and/or despicable and repulsive actions. They are given little to no entertaining elements, complexity, sympathetic traits, or anything like that. Most, if not all, of the characters in-universe, absolutely loathe them. They are the exact opposite of Love Exalted heroes.

Some of the villains are Complete Monsters or Near Pure Evils, given that an author wants to purposely make a Hate Sink as hateable as possible. Good examples of Hate Sinks without any redeeming qualities include Kanade Otonokoji, Scarlet Spiker and Francis.

Sometimes, a Hate Sink can have redeeming qualities (e.g. Awesamdude). However, their redeeming qualities should be at a minimum and they should still be presented negatively most of the time. Sometimes, they can become more likable along the way, so if this ever happens, they must be removed from this category since they are no longer intended to be just hated. In worst cases however, a Hate Sink's redeeming qualities can only make them more despicable, especially if they only have one (e.g. Father Fairest and Mother Mairest).

It is uncommon for them to overlap with Laughably Evil, as Hate Sinks are usually not that entertaining. However, it is still possible for them to overlap if:

  • Villains who were designed to be hated but frequently come off as genuinely funny. (e.g. THOUGHT).
  • Villains who guise their true loathsome colours under a comical persona. (e.g. Carlo Luciano, Freddy Fazbear)
  • Villains who initially start off as laughable but slowly become darker as the story goes on or vice-versa (e.g. Awesamdude, Dimentio, Christopher Nikushime, Francis, and Tails).
  • Dissociative Villains who have a personality with comical traits and a personality with more detestable traits.
  • Ensemble villains who are laughable in one role and more contemptible in another.

Please note that just because a loathsome villain is presented comedically on one small occasion, does not mean they are Laughably Evil (e.g Hit The Target, Nancy and Black Impostor). Likewise, just because a comical villain briefly loses their comedic traits, does not mean they are a Hate Sink (e.g. Pandora Deathbringuer, SMG3, Prince Charming and Sir Benedict Cumbersnatch). Hate Sink and Laughably Evil crossovers must have a significant amount of both hateable and humorous traits (e.g Legion).

However, like with Laughably Evil, it is not necessary for every villain to be a Hate Sink, as some can be somewhere in between (e.g. Niles, Spongebob Squarepants, Cell, Purge Raiders and Kammy Koopa) where audiences can make up their own opinions.

It's also rare for a Hate Sink to be Inconsistently Heinous, because most of the types of preventions these villains have need to be at least very severe preventions from Near Pure Evil or be too many for them to be not as despicable anymore. However, it isn't hard for Inconsistently Heinous amoral characters to be Hate Sinks.

Notes[]

If the villains look disgusting enough but the people who made the work said that the villain was meant to be seen as tragic, complex or multidimensional (e.g. The Tortured One and Lieutenant Obsidian), they do not count. As such, villains who appear repulsive enough for that category but later surpass their traits to be outweighed by entertainment factors such as evil is cool, laughably evil all that will no longer apply here (e.g. Helene Riley). In addition, villains who qualified as Hate Sinks in their debut, but eventually had plans to be redeemed in sequels that were scrapped and no longer used also don't qualify.

Hate Sinks can never be Scapegoats as even if a Hate Sink's fate is far too excessive and/or horrific, it's still well-deserved due to their despicable nature.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Magnificent Baddies can never be in this category. Because Hate Sinks only exist to be hated, which is the complete opposite of Magnificent Baddies.

Other categories that disqualify a villain from being a Hate Sink are Affably Evil, On & Off, Redeemed, Grey Zone, Villains by Proxy, and Anti-Villains.
