Do you not get it?! I am doing you all a favor! Life has no meaning. Why do everything you do in life even though it could all end just like that? Why care about anyone? Why do anything? I will give it a meaning; once I destroy this entire multiverse, I will recreate it my image, and you will all be my slaves...
~ Exitium before he destroyed his universe.
Nothing you do has meaning, nor will it have an impact, in the end you will never see the bigger picture
~ The Crooked Man telling Lucifer about his nihilistic beliefs

Nihilists are characters who believe that the existence of life has no purposes, values or meanings, their own included. Nihilists do not believe in moralities and all rules and/or codes they follow are superficial or for practical reasons. They usually do not have specific long–term goals, will sink to all levels of depravity to further their arbitrary objectives, and are often sociopaths and/or suicidal; they can overlap with Social Darwinists and Harbingers for Rebirth as well through shared beliefs in a purpose of bringing about the "end times" and leaving others or themselves to pick up the pieces left behind by the mess they've created.

Many Nihilists wish to destroy everything in existence or at least whatever it is possible for them to destroy. What makes them some of the most dangerous and unpredictable Villains is that they have nothing to lose, not even their very lives. At the highest point possible Nihilists can become cataclysmic due to their desires of literally erasing everything in existence as they see fit; like many powerful and far-reaching Villains they might just be able to make their twisted dreams into reality.

Some redeemed nihilists decide to appreciate life more and stop being nihilistic after their redemption (although they might not too). It should also be worth noting that nihilists can still be capable of caring and/or being protective over a select amount while still being uncaring to everyone else.

Examples include Nekrozoth, Dimentio (Super Paper Mario 2: The Seven Sorcerers), Flowey (Flowey Is Not a Good Life Coach), Red (NES Godzilla Creepypasta), Turbo Mecha Sonic, Painset Shimmercakes, Sonic.exe (original), Nightmare Medic, Entity 01, Apocalypse (Marvel Fanfilm Universe), and Morgaroth.

Notes[]

  • If villains seem nihilistic, but at the same time value their own existences, they do not qualify (e.g. Lord DeGroot, Toad, Prince Charming, Xochtal Reklaw, Pinkamena, Niles, and Pepper Satanica). The appropriate term is "Absurdists". They should go under:
    • Cowards, if they at first had nihilistic traits only to panic during the climax and run away.
      • Also, Cowards can NEVER be nihilistic because a coward values their life very much, unlike a nihilist who cares what happens to them only to the slightest extent or none at all. The two are also polar opposites. However, a coward can at times be suicidal to escape justice when they cannot control the situation.
    • Hypocrites/Liars if they acted nihilistic only to contradict it if and they deep down show they do not genuinely believe that.
    • Egotists who only seem nihilistic because they cannot get what they desire, merely appearing they don't care about anything until they get closer to their desires.
    • Social Darwinists who believe there is no higher purpose other than "survival of the fittest" but only use this twisted ideology as an excuse to hurt others for their own valued gain.
    • and/or Misanthropes if they only view humanity or their species of origin as meaningless, rather than existence.
  • Not all nihilists are destructive or Chaotic Evil in nature, some may be Neutral Evil if they have some goal that would benefit them (e.g. Shadow Meggy and Emma), while others can even be Lawful Evil if they still oppress others with their own standard (e.g. Johnny Kelmunn). They can also be Chaotic Neutral and even in rare cases, Lawful Neutral.
  • If a villain only shows gleefulness during their death and/or are defiant to the end. they do not qualify. A villain is only nihilistic if they express a point of view or show by their actions that they do not value humanity nor themselves.
  • Some nihilists don't qualify as Complete Monster because their nihilism can be played for sympathy where a traumatic event scars them and makes them believe nothing in life matters. They can only qualify as a CM if their nihilism doesn't make them sympathetic.
