Ceroba Ketsukane, also known as The Kitsune, is the main antagonist of the 2023 indie video game Undertale Yellow, the fan-prequel to Undertale.
She is the widow of the late scientist Chujin Ketsukane - a Boss Monster. She wishes to complete his Boss Monster serum in his memory. To do this, Ceroba would need to fuse a Boss Monster's Soul with extract taken from a Human Soul - a dangerous process that killed Chujin when he tried it on himself.
Desperate for Boss Monster test subjects, she attempted to formulate the serum by injecting extract from the Blue Soul into her daughter Kanako, who carried the Boss Monster gene. Unfortunately, Blue Soul rejected the fusion immediately, causing Kanako to fall into a death-like coma. As such, Ceroba would try to obtain a "pure" human soul - one without violent intent - that could be used to make the serum, and possibly save her daughter, leading her to target Clover in the Pacifist Route.
She acts as a major character in the Neutral Route, the main antagonist of the Pacifist Route, and a major antagonist in the Genocide Route.
Appearance[]
Ceroba is a humanoid, fox-like monster with beige fur and long ginger hair tied into a ponytail using a piece of red ribbon and a bell to secure it. She wears a white kimono with red trim and an obi, as well as white boots of a similar coloration. She wields a staff that has a bell resembling a fox's head, as well as a red ribbon similar to the one in her hair.
In the second phase of her Pacifist boss fight, Ceroba dons the kitsune mask Kanako made for her and undoes her hair, which gains pink tips, causing them to resemble the nine tails of a kitsune. She also gains pink side bangs, a light beige cape with a pink trim and the mask she wears gradually becomes more damaged, revealing her glowing red eyes.
Personality[]
In contrast to the scatterbrained Martlet and overenthusiastic Starlo, Ceroba functions as the voice of reason in-game. Level headed and affable, she functions as a straight man to the cast of comedic characters, willing to do whatever it takes to help those in need. Furthermore, Ceroba is extremely observant and can infer the feelings of others with ease, though for the sake of keeping others happy she often lies or hides her true feelings, as shown when she doesn't tell Starlo that his "North Star" sheriff persona has gone overboard until the Feisty Five disband, and when she lies to the entire cast that she needs to find her daughter Kanako in Hotland's labs, only for it to be revealed that her true intention is to claim Clover's soul.
A key trait of Ceroba's personality is her stubbornness, first shown by her suspicion to the true reason as to why Chujin left his job. This trait would also carry over to her efforts to make the Boss Monster serum as, despite sending Kanako into a state of near-death from the impure soul, Ceroba would refuse to give up and seek out another soul to both save her daughter and continue her husband's legacy, oblivious to the notion that Chujin's legacy wasn't his incomplete serum, but the happiness he brought to monsters through his actions. This quality makes her especially ruthless in the Pacifist Route as she's willing to hurt innocent monsters like Martlet and Starlo just to get her hands on Clover's soul. Fortunately, Ceroba is not completely numb to reason: depending on the player's choices, she can be convinced to willingly gives up her quest, and is willing to accept the consequences of her actions regardless.
Ceroba is also shown to have a strict sense of morality even in her darkest moments: she acknowledges how far gone she is and, when she's about to land a final hit on Clover before her second phase, she's shown to be crying, showing she genuinely feels bad for trying to kill them but prioritizes fulfilling Chujin's final wish over her own feelings.
Despite her mostly serious characterization, Ceroba is not without her comedic moments. She often demonstrates a sarcastic sense of humor when others carry out foolish plans and is shown to break her cool and determined front on occasion. Her more rational personality leads her to be rather frustrated when dealing with more comedic or dimwitted characters like Axis.
Biography[]
Background[]
Hailing from the Wild East, Ceroba grew up in the Dunes with her childhood friend Starlo, the two becoming best friends later on and dating for a short while. However, Ceroba eventually broke up with him as she wished to "grow up", and he didn't. The two remained on good terms. She eventually married a Boss Monster named Chujin, and bore him a daughter named Kanako. Chujin would work under King Asgore as an engineer for the Steamworks, but after his prototype robot Axis nearly destroyed the king's flower patch thanks to a malfunction, he would be fired from his job. Despite this setback, Chujin would continue working on Axis in secret, telling his family that he simply resigned instead.
One day, during a visit to Snowdin to meet Kanako's friend Dalv, when Ceroba and Chujin weren't looking, a human arrived. Hoping to protect Kanako, Dalv attacked the human, but fled when the human retaliated. Enraged at how his daughter's life was endangered, Chujin ordered Axis to hunt down and apprehend the human. Thanks to a glitch, Axis killed them instead, leaving the Blue Soul in Chujin's possession.
Now believing that all humans were dangerous, Chujin decided to make a serum capable of making normal monsters as powerful as Boss Monsters. To do this, he needed an extract formed from fusing a Boss Monster soul to the human's. Lacking other Boss Monsters to experiment with, he decided to test the process on himself in secret, documenting his progress in secret video tapes. Unfortunately, due to its violent nature, the blue soul repeatedly rejected the fusion, causing his soul to deteriorate and leaving him fatally sick. He made his final request to Ceroba in a videotape revealing his experiment to her, asking that she'd continue his research: seek out a 'pure' human soul - one untainted by violence - and find a other Boss Monster to test the serum on. He specifically requested that she not use Kanako in the experiment, so she could live a happy life, free from the pressures of his experiment.
While she initially followed her husband's last request to the letter, Ceroba soon became desperate thanks to a lack of Boss Monsters in the Underground. One day, Kanako discovered and watched Chujin's research tapes. She also found a document in the trash - one made by Ceroba - stating that she believed she had found a way to purify the soul extract, presumably making it safe. Despite seeing her father's final wish, Kanako volunteered herself to be a test subject. Running out of options, Ceroba agreed to test Kanako. The extract rejected Kanako immediately, causing her to "fall down" (fall into a coma that precedes death in monsters). Ceroba would sent Kanako to Alphys, hoping that the determination experiments could somehow revive her. In the meantime, she would search for a human soul pure enough to form the serum with.
Undertale Yellow[]
Neutral Route[]
Ceroba first appears in the saloon after Starlo drags Clover in, intending to put on a show with Clover as the centerpiece. When Clover leaves the saloon later on, Ceroba greets them at the door and asks of Clover to go along with Starlo's antics for the time being, offering to help them leave later. Ceroba often appears by Starlo's side, providing commentary on his antics with Clover and the Feisty Four. However, Starlo begins neglecting his posse in favour of Clover and even giving them the official position of deputy, making the rest of the posse jealous and prompting them to fight Clover when Starlo isn't looking. Though Clover survives, Starlo is infuriated when he comes back and scolds them for being ungrateful, to which the Feisty Four point out it was his selfishness that prompted their behaviour - they immediately disband, leaving Starlo without a posse. Ceroba also encourages Starlo to change, causing him to leave for a while. During that time, Ceroba secretly breaks Martlet out of the county jail, as Starlo had arrested her to get to Clover.
Later on, Starlo decides that Clover is the source of his recent problems and attacks them. Ceroba arrives to stop the fight, telling her friend that while his intentions of livening up the town with his sheriff persona are noble, he's let the power go to his head and that he must stop. Starlo realizes his delusion and stops, apologizing to Clover for his misdeeds. Ceroba prompts Starlo to go and reunite the Feisty Five. She also notes that Clover has killed at least 1 monster and thus elects not to follow them, stating that Clover can take care of themselves - in reality, she knows that Clover's soul is impure and unsuitable for Chujin's experiment, giving her no reason to care about them anymore. Thus, Ceroba leaves, leaving Clover to go on alone as Martlet has to clock back in for her job. Later on, a letter from Starlo reveals that Ceroba threw a party for him reuniting with the Feisty Five and amending their relations. She can be found in the Saloon again with the Feisty Five, watching Moray sing and play the guitar alongside Starlo. Ceroba will be surprised by Clover’s arrival but, thanks to their presence reminding her of her failed mission, she will ask them to leave.
If Starlo is killed in battle, Ceroba will arrive to ask about what happened to him. Clover can choose to be stay quiet or apologize. Either way, Ceroba fails to recognize that Clover has killed her friend, and goes to his family's farm to search for him. She's later seen assuring Star's family at their home that she'll do her best to find him, leaving to continue searching.
Pacifist Route[]
Ceroba's interactions in the Pacifist route follow that of the Neutral route up until the end of Starlo's duel, upon which she announces that she has important matters concerning Kanako in the Steamworks and can't stay. She and Starlo head to the Steamworks gate, where she tells Clover that Kanako is being held in a lab in Hotland, and that they must cut through the Steamworks to reach it and find a route for Clover to go home. Starlo offers to join them, but Ceroba encourages him to go back and make amends with his posse. With that, Starlo hands Clover their deputy badge before they and Ceroba head off into the Steamworks. If Clover destroys any robot in the Steamworks, she will grow severely agitated, and abandons Clover later on, since she needs Cover's soul to be free of violence for the experiment to work.
Upon arriving in the Steamworks, Ceroba insists on guiding Clover through and the duo get to work activating the generators in order to open the gates. While Ceroba stares cluelessly at a control panel, Clover quickly manages to activate the generators and get the doors open. Ceroba acknowledges that she didn't do anything in terms of problem solving and lets Clover lead the way instead.
On the way, they encounter Axis. He deems the duo to be intruders and decides to detain them. Ceroba replies that she's allowed to be in her husband's old workplace. Hearing his creator's name, Axis asks if Chujin is around (shocking Ceroba, since she didn't know that Chujin made him) but as he's not visible, Axis just opens a trapdoor under Ceroba and Clover, sending them both to a storage room.
After collecting herself, Ceroba decides to create a robot to distract Axis the next time he appears. Clover gathers the parts desired and makes a robot, which Ceroba stashes away for later. The duo escape through a vent into the Steamworks, where they encounter more of Chujin's creations which Ceroba is hesitant to harm. The duo board a robotic manta ray and, opening another gate, proceed with their adventure. Unfortunately Axis appears behind them and chases after the duo, forcing Clover and Ceroba to run away and hide in lockers. Axis is befuddled by the duo's disappearance and leaves, after which Ceroba admits that in the heat of the moment, she forgot about the plan to use the robot decoy.
Venturing further ahead, Axis breaks open a window in a nearby room and begins firing at Clover, forcing the duo to run again. Backed into a corner, Ceroba deflects one of Axis's projectiles and asks of him to wait for a moment. She quickly presents him the robot as a new companion, but Axis isn't in the mood for a new friend and prepares an attack anyway. Ceroba decides to resort to violence and deflects Axis's energy ball back at him, damaging him and forcing him to retreat to repair himself. Exhausted from the journey, Ceroba and Clover take a seat at a nearby table to relax. She admits that she envies Starlo for his optimism despite the dreary circumstance, noting that Asgore is a symbol of hope to most monsters in the Underground. Ceroba, however, believes that such an outlook on taking revenge on humanity is foolish as humans may have prepared for war, and that the monsters should handle their own problems. Reflecting on her own mission to save Kanako, Ceroba passes Clover a picture of her daughter, lamenting that Kanako didn't deserve her cruel fate.
The duo eventually arrive at the Greenhouse and accidentally activate the Guardener after stepping on some flowers. While initially passive, a glitch in her system causes the Guardener to determine this act as a level 10 offense and, wrapping Ceroba and Clover up in vines, attempts to terminate them. Clover manages to pick through the vines and lowers the Guardener's offense level, causing her to calm down and let the duo pass. They enter a factory section manned by a sentient program who informs them that to obtain a passcode for a door, must package items according to color and sort the boxes later on. Ceroba is annoyed by how tedious the process is, to which the program replies that she isn't intelligent enough to appreciate the convolutions, causing Ceroba to lose her temper. Her anger nearly ruins their chance at getting the code, but Clover quickly stops her, so the machine tells them the passcode and lets the leave.
Heading into a furnace room, Ceroba and Clover encounter Axis once again, who's undeterred by his previous failures. However, he trips over a wire and cuts the power, allowing Ceroba and Clover to hide quietly in the darkness while Axis searches for them with his flashlight (which costs 95% of his battery). The program from earlier loudly greets the duo but Ceroba immediately smashes its screen. Thus, the two get to work hiding from Axis and reactivating the furnaces, restoring power. Axis finds them again but, thanks to Ceroba insisting she's not trying to stall him, has a cordial conversation with her, revealing that the reason some Steamworks doors need a password in addition to an ID is simply because of two-step verification. The duo quickly run off while Axis, still confused, leaves.
Ceroba arrives in an office area and finds Chujin's records, where it's revealed he developed many models of Axis but they all ended in failure and even hurt Asgore, causing him to fire Chujin. Chujin protested that the monsters would need protection from the humans awaiting above, and that the Axis line would provide such defence. Asgore however, remarks that while Chujin's goal is noble his incompetence is too much and he's forced to leave. Ceroba angrily tears up the paper, claiming that Chujin was more capable than the current royal scientist, Dr. Alphys could ever be with Axis being a masterpiece. The duo arrive at an interface, and, after Clover initiates an emergency shutdown, the way is opened for them.
However, just as Ceroba is about to follow Clover, the door slams shut and Axis reveals himself. She asks that Clover not destroy her husband's last creation, which they agree to as they stall Axis in battle, draining his power by annoying him into using powerful attacks which are reflected into him. This buys Ceroba the time to bust open the door and with one final deflect, Axis's power is completely drained. With his murderous instincts shut down to save power, Axis feels lost as to what to do until Ceroba presents Clover's robot to him, causing him to become infatuated with it, causing him to recharge by his love alone. Clover spares him. Axis gets up and leaves, but not before asking Ceroba to tell Chujin he misses him.
The duo finally arrive in Hotland, where Ceroba finds an elevator up. Just before she and Clover can board it, Starlo and Ed arrive, confronting Ceroba about a trapdoor they found while tidying up her house for a return party and about the true nature of Kanako's condition. They ask Ceroba to tell the truth. Ceroba panics, rushes into the elevator and escapes to New Home. She's later found cornered by Starlo, where she insists that she needs to head to the Lab which Starlo asks her not to do, advising against it. Martlet and Clover arrive, having watched Chujin's tapes and confront her. Starlo asks of them to leave but Ceroba thanks them for bringing Clover to her, and recommends that Martlet and Starlo just leave Clover with her. Starlo points out that Ceroba herself said Kanako is alive and well. He invites her to just go find Kanako, to which Ceroba admits that she lied to them - Kanako is as good as dead. Martlet and Starlo both try to talk Ceroba down, but tells them that while she does realize how far gone she is, she doesn't care and will finish what she started. Starlo tries to hold Ceroba off while Martlet tries to fly Clover away, but Ceroba quickly incapacitates both of them, leaving the human alone.
Finally facing down Clover, Ceroba remarks that she is sorry for what she is about to do to them. She admits that she almost wishes Clover never arrived, allowing her to simply drown her sorrows at the saloon. Ceroba remarks that Clover's optimism about finding the five humans was naive and that if the plan was to ask Asgore to let them leave, Asgore would end them the second they entered the castle and steal their soul. Noting herself to be doing the same thing Asgore would do, Ceroba accepts that she's a hypocrite but insists that Chujin's plan would actually save monsterkind instead on foolishly promising the annihilation of humanity like Asgore's plan would. Since she has nothing left to lose, Ceroba is willing to keep fighting to the bitter end.
Midway through the battle, Ceroba grows impatient and begins relentlessly firing at Clover, reducing their health to mere decimal points. All of a sudden, Clover gains the ability to fire projectiles and thus, redirects Ceroba's attack back at her, knocking her down. Seeing as Clover is so determined, Ceroba dons Kanako's mask and, vowing to end them for the sake of monsterkind, unleashes her full power, putting up a shield to protect herself. Eventually, Clover breaks the shield and cracks the mask: this leads to a blinding flash of light, revealing a flashback of Ceroba's life.
In the flashback, Ceroba is trying to cheer an ailing Chujin up by telling him Starlo's parents are coming over for a picnic. Chujin asks of her and Kanako to go without him, revealing to her that he's dying. Ceroba begs of him to be frank with the situation, to which Chujin reveals the true nature of his work and the project he's been building all this time, asking of her to watch the message he left her. As Ceroba cries and holds the faltering Chujin's hand, the latter remarks that she never cried much, to which she says that she saves the tears for the moments that matter.
As Clover and Ceroba arrive back in the present time, she realizes the human has been watching her memories and is enraged. Ceroba sets up yet another shield which Clover breaks along with her mask, initiating yet another flashback. In it, ceroba catches Kanako watching Chujin's secret tapes, causing the young girl to be confused by her status as a Boss Monster. Kanako feels guilty for the death of her father, to which Ceroba assures her it isn't her fault and that she's been trying to find ways to make the serum without Boss Monsters. Kanako produces a discarded note from Ceroba that reveals that - in her opinion - she's managed to purify the extract, making it safe. Ceroba notes that while it is safer, she still agreed to not let Kanako get involved. Kanako insists on making herself useful, assuring her mother that she'd be safe no matter what. Ceroba finally bends to the pressure and agrees, sharing one last hug with Kanako before injecting the extract into her. While it initially seems successful, the extract cracks Kanako's soul, causing her to collapse on the spot. Ceroba catches and holds her child's motionless body, begging her to wake up.
Clover and Ceroba snap back to reality. Ceroba bitterly asks them if they're happy they know the whole truth and if forcing her to relive her worst memories brings them joy. She admits that she is a very flawed person, but refuses to back down from what she's done, deciding instead to cling to the chance of finishing her mission . Letting out a final battle cry, Ceroba wills herself up and sets up yet another barrier. Now faced with Ceroba's fully unleashed power, Clover dodges and weaves through her attacks, shooting down the final barrier before breaking her mask and staff to pieces.
Exhausted and with nothing left to live for, Ceroba breaks down in tears, lamenting that her family, dreams of saving monsterkind and Chujin's legacy are all gone, with all of her wicked deeds being for naught. Ceroba surrenders her life, fully expecting and wanting Clover to kill her for her crimes. From there, Clover can choose whether to spare or to kill Ceroba, leading to two possible endings.
If Clover decides to kill Ceroba, she thanks Clover for granting her death. She uses her last words to greet her dead husband, saying, "(I'm) sorry to keep you waiting, but I'm here now", before Clover executes her with a carefully aimed gunshot to the head. As monsters turn to dust when they die, her body dissolves, leaving behind only Kanako's broken mask. Upon awakening, Starlo is worried that Ceroba seems to be missing, however, he finds the broken mask and realizes that Ceroba has been killed. Deeply grief stricken by the death of his childhood friend, he lashes out at Clover for killing her. Martlet defends Clover, saying that under the circumstances, Clover's actions were just. Starlo admits that she's telling the truth... and that he doesn't care, since he just lost his best friend. He further admits that he wished he'd killed Clover before leaving, taking the broken mask with him. Afterwards, Martlet decides to take Clover to Asgore, to ask him to let Clover return to the surface. Upon arriving at the castle, she tells Asgore that Clover is a good human, and that he deserves to live his life on the surface. Asgore refuses, insisting instead that he and Clover must do battle. Clover agrees, much to Martlet's grief. In the ensuing battle, Clover is killed. Asgore takes Clover's Soul, putting it with the other five he has taken.
Conversely, if Ceroba is spared, she will repeatedly beg for death, confused by Clover's mercy. Starlo wakes up, calming her down and forgiving Ceroba for her attack on him. Martlet awakens too and prepares to carry Clover away, to which Ceroba reassures her that she means no harm anymore as the human has won. She is at a loss with what to do now thanks to the sheer hopelessness of her circumstances, but Starlo comforts her, saving that he too felt a similar despair when his posse disbanded and that with a little forgiveness, she too can recover her hope. Martlet also agrees that while Ceroba's actions were flawed, she can choose how she acts from now on. Ceroba still mourns that she can't finish her husband's legacy, to which Martlet tells her that Chujin's legacy isn't his serum but the hope and happiness he brought. Ceroba is frustrated at her own narrow-mindedness, so Starlo and Martlet assure her they'll help her get out of this dark spot. The latter also offers to use her connections with Alphys to try and find Kanako.
Thankful for the help that all of her friends have brought her, Ceroba apologizes to Clover for deceiving them, admitting that she did have fun with them in the Steamworks. Before she can continue, Clover embraces her, shocking her initially before she returns the favor. Martlet prepares to bring Clover to the barrier for their trip back home but Ceroba tells her that Asgore is too stubborn and will kill Clover no matter how kind they are. Thus, Martlet and Starlo decide to hide Clover and let them live with them. Martlet remarks that it is unfair that the next humans will likely be killed by Asgore. Ceroba suggests that some of these humans could deserve death in this hypothetical scenario, causing an argument between the two until Starlo calms them both down.
Suddenly, Clover presents their soul to the trio, solemnly telling them that "it's time". Martlet and Starlo are startled and confused, assuring them that they can live wherever they like and that they deserve better. When Clover doesn't budge however, Ceroba realizes their true intent: to willingly give up their soul and give the monsters a chance at freedom. She notes that the adventures they dragged Clover on were because of their own desires and if Clover wants to leave this way, they should be allowed to. Martlet, Starlo and Ceroba accept Clover's choice, thanking them for being such a kind and selfless soul before having a group hug. As Ceroba prepares to collect Clover's soul, she asks Martlet and Starlo to leave first, which they do so, accepting the human's hat and gun as parting gifts. With this, Ceroba tells Clover they have earned her respect, producing the jar in which Clover puts their soul into. Ceroba offers to stay around while Clover passes on, but they tell her they'll be okay and ask her to leave, to which she tearfully says goodbye and goes off, leaving Clover to peacefully succumb and die.
Sometime later, Ceroba and Starlo join Martlet as she holds a funeral for Clover, placing their hat and gun on a raft. Dalv also arrives, having been invited by Ceroba as the first person who met Clover. Recounting his experience with Clover, he fist bumps Martlet as a greeting. Starlo places down safety goggles into the raft to keep Clover safe and with this, the raft is pushed into the river as the cast bids farewell.
No Mercy Route[]
In the No Mercy route, Ceroba assists in evacuating the Wild East's residents. However, against her advice Starlo stays behind and challenges Clover to a duel, hoping to stop their rampage. Unfortunately when Ceroba goes to check on her friend, she finds that Starlo has already been mortally wounded by Clover's bullet. As Starlo dies, he mourns how close he was to winning, to which Ceroba assures him he was a good sheriff and the best the Underground had ever seen. With his final breath, Starlo thanks Ceroba for always supporting him and asks her to deliver justice before turning to dust.
With nobody left in her life, Ceroba charges at Clover in a rage, beginning her boss fight. She questions why Clover is committing these crimes, asking if it's a personal crusade. She decides that her husband was right and the humans want absolute control over the monsters. Ceroba swears to avenge her friend and all the monsters Clover killed. As the fight rages on, Ceroba grows more disheveled and aggressive, hastening her attacks, however, she can't hold out forever and is eventually fatally wounded. Clutching onto her staff, she demands that Clover look her in the eye and answer if they're happy with what they've done, knowing that there's no way she could've swayed them from their goal. She curses Clover with her dying breath, declaring her hope that they choke on the dust of fallen monsters when they wipe the species out, asking that they go to hell before finally succumbing.
Quotes[]
“ | Clover... I... I'm sorry for what I've done. I almost wish you never showed up in the Wild East. Maybe then I could' ve continued to bury my sorrows in the Saloon. But now... I must follow through with my mission. I've somehow grown to respect the hell out of you but... At the end of the day... you're naive. There is so much you don't understand about monsters. What, did you think you'd jump down here and find them? Five humans, living out their lives, unharmed... That isn't how it works. I'm guessing you discovered that truth, right? Then what? Was your and Martlet's plan to storm Asgore's Castle for revenge? Or was it simply to plead for a free ticket back to the Surface?
He only needs two more SOULS to shatter the barrier. Wouldn't hesitate for a SECOND to make that one. But... who am I to criticize how he carries out business? Here I am about to do the very same thing... I am a hypocrite. A liar. Sure. But at least I... with Chujin's guidance, can save countless monster lives. These two couldn't understand that. And Asgore... Asgore is a coward. Didn't believe in my husband at all. He thinks problems will just disappear if he closes the curtains. I long for freedom as much as anyone but he... He doesn't consider what will happen once he gets his SOULS. Everyone else too. They all believe victory will come easy but the humans I've heard of? They are powerful. Ruthless. As soon as we try to leave... ... They will stuff us RIGHT back into this hellhole. They want our misery to fester until we give up and die out. ... I am no better than Asgore on a scale of morality, I'm sure of it. But what I am, is proactive. Monsterkind is worth protecting, so I will see that it is done. Truthfully... I have nothing left in life, so I've made peace with throwing it away... You'll fight back, but you can't forever. Goodbye. |
„ |
~ Ceroba right before her fight. |
“ | My love... My child... All... gone. Why wouldn't you just... I swore I had the key. Saving monsterkind from their demise... Carrying on his legacy... It was worth the risk to me. But now... Now my life is over. For nothing. For no one. I have done unforgivable things. I let my husband work himself to death... I put my precious little girl through hell... And... Oh god. Star... Martlet... All for a chance to make a difference. A chance. I don't think I can bear this weight any longer. You won this battle. Do what need to done. | „ |

Trivia[]
- Ceroba's appearance is largely based off the kitsune, a nine-tailed fox yokai that is infamous for its trickery and magic prowess. Her habit of deceiving people is largely based off this creature, while her flowing hair in her second form and pyrokinesis reference the kitsune's tails and its association with will o' wisps respectively.
- This is likely why she betrays Clover in the end of a True Pacifist Route.
- When talking to Ceroba in the Steamworks, it's revealed she has a fear of heights.
- Ceroba is apparently scared of Undyne, as she remarks in the Steamworks that even dealing with Axis would be easier than facing her in Waterfall.
- Ceroba's mainly Japanese-inspired design was likely made to contrast Clover's, making their final battle a metaphorical clash of East and West.
- In the No Mercy route, Ceroba's name will glow yellow when she's one hit from death. However, this is simply to indicate her low HP and it's impossible to spare her.
- As it's stated that monsters are empowered by positive emotions such as love, it's speculated that the love Kanako poured into the mask she made for Ceroba was what made the latter so powerful in her Pacifist Route boss fight, especially since the former was a Boss Monster.
- Ceroba’s name is an American name that means “care”, referencing her motherly nature and drive to revive Kanako.
- This is also a hint towards the fact that unlike her spouse and child, she isn't a Boss Monster seeing as she lacks their Japanese names.
