Chara, also known as the Fallen Human is the main antagonist of Dusttale.

Now lusting for power, Chara took full control over Frisk's body, repeating the genocide route to only gain more power and to see if anything would change. They're actions are indirectly responsible for Sans' fall into insanity, and why he went on his own genocide route.

Biography[]

Past[]

Originally, Frisk sold Chara their soul after the first genocide route. They believed that if that it would be the end, until Frisk would go on and act on several more genocide routes, selling Chara multiple souls. At some point, Chara believed that the souls were making them more and more powerful, and that they were turning them into a god.

They decided to go on and possess Frisk, committing hundreds of genocide routes, looking for something to change. The multiple genocide routes would soon drive Sans insane.

Events of Dusttale[]

Upon starting a new route, Chara heads through the Ruins, though everything seemed different. There were less monsters there, and it mostly seemed wiped out. They soon find Toriel, who Sans slaughters right before their own eyes, gaining LV. They would soon learn that Sans had been killing the monsters to gain LV, just so he could finally beat them. They see him killing multiple monsters, including Papyrus, Undyne, Alphys, and Mettaton, just to gain more power. Though their sources were limited, Chara would kill anyone who they could find in order to become more powerful, though they would end up not being as powerful as they were in most other timelines. Eventually, they arrive in the corridor, where they would have one final fight with Sans.

Should have Frisk taken all the requirements, during their fight, Frisk would resist Chara, preventing them from attacking Sans. Confused, Sans questions them why they haven't attacked. Angered, Chara attempts to attack Sans themself, only for Frisk to block their attack.

This results in the two fighting, with Chara explaining that if Frisk kills them, they will die too, only to come back. However, Sans, now realizing the errors in his ways, gives Frisk his LV, in order to finally erase Chara from existence. Soon after, Frisk would reset the timeline, finally completely a new pacifist route, where they and Sans seem to finally be at peace.

After a long fight with Sans, Chara slashes him across the chest, letting him slowly bleed out. Soon, Sans' begins to lose all of his memories of the timeline, realizing that he would constantly be killing his friends and brother for presumably many more routes to come. Sans would then soon die. Chara, now in what appears to be a physical form explains to Frisk in Asgore's throne room why they became the way they did, and that now, they really wanted to gain more power to become a god and see if anything else would change, and they were pleased that something did finally change in this timeline after 327 genocide routes. They then tell Frisk that they are slowly beginning to lose their memories of the timeline as well, and that they should remember it for them in the next timeline.

Soon after this, Chara and Frisk would destroy the world, presumably resetting for another route.

Personality[]

Unlike in canon Undertale where Chara's personality and desires are for the most part unknown, Chara's objectives in Dusttrust are clear. They are a psychopathic Megalomaniac who craves power. By doing that, they decide to kill every monster in the Underground multiple times, their adoptive family included.

It has also been implied that Chara is bored of nothing really changing throughout the 327 Genocide Runs and craves something new. When Sans remembers everything and does his own genocide to compete with them, Chara is intrigued by what will happen next. They also lack empathy, as they continuously kill anyone they see without remorse. In the bad ending when Sans' memories are being erased and he realizes that he, alongside the human, will murder other monsters, Chara clearly takes sick enjoyment of this and kills him.

Overall, this Chara has proven to be despicable and selfish for wanting to watch the monsters die over and over again to gain more power for their own twisted needs.

Quotes[]

Greetings. Surprised to see me? You really shouldn't be. We're a team, remember? And as your teammate, I'd like to congratulate you. Together, we've done it. We've conquered this world again. We've reached the absolute. 327. That's how many routes it took for something to change. For this world to transform. I didn't know what you were doing at first. We had just finished the very first route. Sans had proven a challenge, but we made it through in the end. And then, you sold me your soul to restore your world. I thought it was the end of your killing. But I was wrong. You reset, and did it all again. You destroyed the world you just sold your soul to restore. I didn't get it. By the end of the second route, I thought a different route may serve you better. But you continued. Once again you sold your soul. Near the end of your ninth route, I realized what you were doing. You were seeing if something, ANYTHING would change. But it didn't. And then you gave up. You sold 9 souls to me for your little "experiment," before you stopped. Before you got bored. I soon realized what all those souls were doing for me. The power of the 9 souls were turning me into a god. I realized the potential of your souls. I no longer wanted to move on to the next world. I wanted to stay right here, gathering souls. I grew to love this world. When you quit, I began. I took control of your body. And kept completing routes. I gained more than anybody can imagine. I completed some routes in mere minutes. In others, I even exceeded LV 20. I created weapons more powerful than the Real Knife. 327. After that many routes, he remembered. Sans. I couldn't believe it. Something actually changed. And then for some reason, my powers became almost nothing. I couldn't do much more than control your body. And that brings us here. This route was frustrating to complete without my godlike powers. But we made it through. I want my powers back. Not only so I can make that skeleton suffer... but because I am losing my memories, too. You see, I know that I will lose the memories of this route after you reset. Like Sans, I can hardly remember what happened in the Ruins. It's an unfortunate consequence of this world changing. So, I'll need you to remember for me. Keep gathering more souls for me, as you've done. And we'll keep destroying this world, until it changes again. See you in the next reset, Frisk.
~ Chara in the bad ending.

Trivia[]

  • Unlike most versions of Chara, this is one of the very few incarnations of the character to be portrayed as a downright villain, as most versions of the character are either morally ambiguous or sympathetic.
  • Frisk blocking Chara's attack to kill Sans may have been taken from the popular Undertale based animation series, Glitchtale, as in the very first episode, Frisk would save Sans by blocking Chara's attack in a similar fashion.
