For many years, I've been starving for that power, the taste of having Gustau's restaurant for myself, and finally, I have got the crown of Gustau's. I will be richer than anyone else in Paris!
~ Mr. Barnaby to Skinner about his ultimate scheme.

Claudian Barnaby, also known for short as Mr. Barnaby, or just Barnaby, is the one of the secondary antagonists (alongside Matheo Sonatos) of the live-action Ratatouille franchise, being the main antagonist of the 2019 fanmade presentation and remake Ratatouille, the first installment of the Pixar Fanverse.

He is a corrupt, cunning, power-hungry and ambitious businessman and he formerly worked as the most trusted cook (and later the sue-chef) of Gusteau's restaurant. That was until he attempted to take over the restaurant. Secretly, Mr. Barnaby is the murderer of his former boss, Chef Auguste Gusteau, and he framed Skinner, Anton Ego and Linguini for the incident (together with his lawyer Talon Labarthe) in order to become both the owner of Gusteau's restaurant and the richest businessman in Paris, who overtakes Anton Ego's amounts of money.

He is portrayed by Iwan Rheon, who also portrayed Mysterio from the Marvel Fanfilm Universe, Ramsay Bolton in the Game of Thrones TV series, and Maximus from the Marvel live-action series Inhumans.

History[]

Claudian Barnaby is at first seen present in a gathering of Chef Gusteau and his employees. Mr. Barnaby asks Gusteau what happenes if Anton Ego destroys the restaurant completely for disliking his food, as he is secretly plotting to usurp the restaurant's ownership. Gusteau replies that Anton won't like the food, but he will love it eventually, as they shall end their rivalry forever and the restaurant will have a better name from that moment of Auguste's success. Mr. Barnaby then cooks a disgusting, pathetic and rotten royal salad which he gives to Mustafa.

Anton Ego then arrives and enters the restaurant. Mustafa serves Gusteau's salad (which is secretly Claudian's salad) to Mr. Ego, much to his disappointment and frustration. The uptight, angered and enraged food critic then calls Gusteau a coward and a fraud, before a big-shot gangster (secretly Mr. Barnaby) quickly draws a gun out of his pocket and shoots Auguste Gusteau, thus killing the unfortunate head-chef for good. Mr. Barnaby, or in the public's eye just another unidentified bigshot-gangster, quickly puts the gun back into his pocket, and Ego then praises the murderer and tells him that he shall hide his real identity from the police since Gusteau has just paid his price. Anton Ego puts Skinner in charge before exiting the room, much to Mr. Barnaby's disagreement.

Claudian then blames Skinner for the accident, asking him if he really murdered Gusteau and if he's insane. Skinner denies that he is insane and tells Barnaby that he did not kill Gusteau, since he did have a vision for a better looking restaurant under his control but he did not kill anybody to achieve his goals. Claudian however questioned Skinner again, mentioning that Skinner was always the one to grow envious of Gusteau's work and that he always had the need to be ontop of everyone else, no matter what. Skinner ordered Claudian to continue working as if Gusteau wasn't dead, thus hoping to settle things down for the good of Gusteau's and to keep himself out of trouble so nobody would be able to frame him for something that he never did. Skinner makes Barnaby the sue-chef of the restaurant as he was always trusted by Gusteau and the employees more than anyone else. Claudian Barnaby then secretly bribes the restaurant's lawyer Talon Labarthe to write a letter which would help him take the restaurant's ownership from Skinner and frame him for the murder of Chef Gusteau.

Mr. Barnaby expected that his scheme would allow him to become the richest man in Paris and become even wealthier than Anton Ego (who received billions of dollars for his negative and yet still convincing review on Gusteau's). He also lusted for power and control over the restaurant and he wanted to be just as even and successful as Chef Gusteau himself. Later, Linguini asked Gustáv Skinner for a job in the restaurant. At first, an enraged and cowardly Skinner declined Alfredo Linguini's request, as he feared that Linguini would frame him for something he never did, and therefore the restaurant's good name will be ruined forever. Mr. Barnaby however calls Skinner for a meeting and convinces him that he should make Linguini the garbage boy of the restaurant, so he could never climb his way to the top and therefore he can never discover the truth or frame Skinner for the accident.

That was all part of a plan to finish the lifeline of the famous Gusteau family and kill Auguste's only child and heir to his throne. Skinner was secretly manipulated all the time by both Anton Ego and Barnaby into believing that the restaurant legally belonged to him and not to Linguini. However, the truth was that it was all a scheme to get rid of Skinner, and allow Claudian to hand his letter to the police and other public authorities, and to become the next owner and head-chef of Gusteau's restaurant after firing and killing Linguini in secret. Chef Skinner in the meanwhile has backaches and befriends Linguini after getting massaged.

After Linguini cured Skinner from his pains, the hot-headed chef Skinner apologized for his rude introduction and developed a fatherly relationship with Alfredo Linguini. Later, Mr. Barnaby informs Chef Skinner that the food critic Seline Leclair came to visit and that she liked Linguini's soup. Skinner proudly congratulates Linguini for his excellent work, much to Barnaby's surprise. Mr. Barnaby however also decides to congratulate Linguini for his soup, before having a little "rest" in his office. Barnaby then goes to the office and secretly reviews Talon's letter about Skinner's false accusations, as he is now ready to frame Skinner for his actions. He briefly remarks that Skinner is about to enter a very black market pretty soon, before he laughs his evil laugh. Barnaby then calls Skinner and Talon for a meeting.

Talon tries to talk Skinner into doing something terrible towards Linguini, before he finds out "the truth" and frames Skinner. Skinner however disagrees with his lawyer, and he implies that Linguini did nothing wrong and that he's very useful for the restaurant and bringing it back to it's popularity and high-ratings among the restaurants of Paris. Skinner demands Talon to let him see what's written in the letter, as he never knew about it anything besides the fact that it makes him legally the restaurant's owner and head-chef, just like Ego's instructed. Talon warned Skinner that if he reads the letter, there will be consequences, and that he might even be thrown out of his position and job as the head-chef of Gusteau's. Mr. Barnaby however demands that Talon shows Skinner the letter anyways, because even such a fool may understand the whole factsheet that Talon has written.

Skinner then reads the factsheet/letter, and realizes that the rightful owner of the restaurant was all this time Linguini, and that Barnaby had framing Gusteau for dissapointing Anton Ego so that Linguini will not get to own the restaurant, despite the fact that it's Linguin's full right to own Gusteau's as the restaurant's ownership was a family-business that passed through several generations. Skinner also understood that he was being manipulated, and that Talon has written the factsheet to frame Skinner and become the richest man of Paris along with the very man who bribed him and his new boss, Mr. Barnaby. Barnaby then revealed to Skinner that he murdered Gusteau and that after many years of starving for the power he now finally has a taste of gaining his power and full control over the restaurant and it's employees. He adds that now that he has Gusteau's crown, he and his lawyer Talon Labarthe will be the richest businessmen in Paris. Mr. Barnaby then grabs Skinner, takes his hat off his head and throws him towards the other side of the office. He then reveals to Skinner that he called the police. The police officer Ardonn arrives and arrests Skinner for suspected organized crime and murder.

After Skinner was framed, Talon asked Barnaby to give him the Chef Gusteau's hat. At first, Mr. Barnaby refuses to give up his position, but the corrupt and greedy lawyer convinced him not to underestimate Linguini and prevent him from owning the place, since it would be much cleverer to let Linguini own the restaurant and let him face Ego by himself so he would fail, and then Barnaby could easily assassinate him in secret and take over the restaurant by force. Mr. Barnaby agreed to Talon Labarthe's ideas, and greets Linguini during the following day, as he informs Linguini that he is now the rightful owner and current head-chef of the restaurant. He also asks Linguini what he can do as the sue-chef of his place. Linguini then tells him to clean up, as he shall now be the garbage boy of Gusteau's restaurant and his lover Colette will be the sue-chef instead of him.

After Anton Ego visits the restaurant and taunts Linguini before promising to return during the following night with high expectations, Linguini orders Mr. Barnaby, Colette and the waiter Mustafa to work hard and cook food so that Ego will be impressed by them. Barnaby and the other workers however encounter Linguini's rat friend and mentor Remy inside the kitchen of the restaurant. Barnaby orders everyone to kill the rat. However, Linguini stops them from killing Remy and reveals to his employees and his wife Colette the truth; that Remy is his good friend and the mentor who always instructs him and teaches him how to cook, since he does not know how to cook himself.

At last, Claudian has gained an opportunity to take the position from Linguini. The disappointed waiter Mustafa asks Linguini how he could befriend a rat. Barnaby then replies to Mustafa's question and tells everyone that it's all because of the fact that Linguini has being conspiring with the rat to let everyone down infront of Anton Ego. Mr. Barnaby then asks Mustafa if he agrees that Linguini should be fired. Mustafa unfortunately agrees, stating that he will not support Linguini if he lets them down for the life of a rat. Barnaby then asks Colette what she thinks about the matter. Colette then feels that despite her conflict and her loving feelings towards Linguini, she has to agree with Mr. Barnaby to fire Linguini since her biggest fear is to loose her job and disappoint Anton Ego.

At last, Claudian Barnaby puts on Gusteau's hat as he manages to take over the restaurant. He orders Linguini to exit the restaurant and threatens him that if he shall come back then he will be killed in the same way that Gusteau was killed. Linguini and Remy however find a plan to stop Barnaby from taking over; while Linguini will rescue Colette from Mr. Barnaby as a distraction, Remy will sneak towards the kitchen and cook the best food he can for Anton Ego. Meanwhile, inside the restaurant, Colette is called by Mr. Barnaby for a short discussion. He reminded Colette that she was once his own girlfriend, and asked her what happened to these good old days and why she married such a stupid man like Linguini. Colette asked Mr. Barnaby however why he is so mean to Linguini. Claudian replied that it's all because he killed Gusteau, and that he is planning to kill also Linguini. He then asks Colette what happened to the good old days in which she never knew Linguini has existed and she was in love with Barnaby. He asks Colette if they can come back to the good old days and put Linguini behind them.

Colette however realizes that she was wrong and blind to Barnaby's manipulations, and she angrily stated that she will never be with an idiot, a monster and a fraud like Barnaby, after ruining her life with Linguini and her future. Mr. Barnaby drew the gun out of his pocket, and from anger and lust, he grabbed Colette and aimed the gun at her throat. He threatens Colette that if she does not love him back and return to the good old days with him, then he will have to put an end to his beautiful love of life. Linguini however returns and yells at Mr. Barnaby to stop and let go of Colette. Claudian Barnaby refuses to let her go, and threatens to kill them both. He adds that for him it will be a win win situation; he will kill both Linguini and Colette and he shall therefore also become the best chef of Paris. However, Colette manages to grab a pan from a table and throw it as it slices Mr. Barnaby's head. After Ego tastes Remy's ratatouille, redeems himself due to remembering his mother and then exits the restaurant with a friendly smile on his face, Linguini calls the police to stop Mr. Barnaby and tells to Officer Ardonn the truth about Claudian and his plans to usurp the restaurant.

Claudian wakes up from his coma, and a moment after he encounters Linguini, Remy and Colette in the kitchen, Officer Ardonn enters with Skinner, who was now released from prison, and he takes Mr. Barnaby instead. The ambitious, power-hungry and ruthless murderer of Gusteau is then sentenced for lifetime. Mr. Barnaby is therefore taken to a dark prison cell and after the warden switches off the lights, Barnaby spends his entire life in prison and pays a high price for his cruel, megalomaniacal and ruthless actions.

Personailty[]

Claudian Barnaby is a pretentious employee and he is very good at manipulating and using people for his own ambitious goals and making himself look innocent despite his unspeakable, ruthless crimes. He is a megalomaniacal, tyrannical, cunning, suspicious, ambitious, greedy, power-hungry, sadistic and lustful individual who cares about nothing more than his own personal interests and stopping others from getting what he wants to achieve.

He is also a very murderous and destructive man who seems to enjoy hurting and endangering other people. He even enjoyed it when he pointed his gun to shoot Remy before anyone else could kill him. He sees himself as the rightful owner and ruler of Gusteau's kitchen, and therefore Mr. Barnaby could be considered as a corrupt and ruthless dictator who only wants power and money so that he could build his ultimate kingdom with an iron fist. Even the other main antagonist of the movie, the tyrannical and greedy food critic Anton Ego, was not even half as evil as he was.

Unlike Ego who was just an extremely negative and selfish food critic who was barely willing to use crime as a method and have Gusteau killed for power and money, Claudian was much more than willing to kill anybody who stood in his way to the throne and he enjoyed every little bit of his scheme, as he expected to gain both money and power and even told Skinner that he was starving for years to get this rank of a head-chef and make the restaurant into his own household as he shall be ontop of the rules.
