Commander John Hatchet is the secondary antagonist of the 2024 fanfilm/presentation The Hunchback of Notre Dame, and a supporting character in the 2025 prequel Phoebus: A Notre Dame Story.

He is the chief commanding officer of The French Soldiers, and the former superior of Captain Phoebus as well as the boss of the Brutish and Oafish guards.

He is the loyal right-hand man of Frollo, gaining power through his operations and willing to commit acts of homicide against the gypsies of Paris. He is also Phoebus' rival, and one of Quasimodo's threatening enemies.

He is portrayed by Kit Harrington, who also played Jon Kindy in the Star Wars fanmade aftermath trilogy.

History[]

Commander Hatchet at first tells Phoebus that Frollo expects him at mid noon for a serious meeting. At first seeming to be friendly to Phoebus, he asks the Brutish and Oafish guards what Phoebus is up to, and when they tell him that he saved Esmerelda from they're wrath, Hatchet promised to be personal towards Phoebus.

He later watched the festival of fools together with Frollo and Phoebus. When Quasimodo won the competition of who's the ugliest in Paris, the crowd applauded out of appreciation towards Quasimodo. To worsen the matters, Hatchet chokes Quasimodo with a rope which he threw onto his neck, and calls that funny, making the crowd change their attitude and laugh at Quasimodo. Esmerelda frees Quasimodo, and Hatchet under Frollo's orders and together with his soldiers tries to get rid of the gypsy girl. However, she disappears and escapes to the church where she claims sanctuary.

Hatchet guards the church with his troops. However, he notices Esmerelda managed to escape, and tells the raging Frollo about this, encouraging Frollo to burn Paris down if he doesn't find her or if people don't know where she is.

Hatchet then goes with the other soldiers, Frollo and Phoebus to search for Esmerelda, as Frollo has declared now war on the gypsies. When Phoebus refuses Frollo's orders to burn a family down inside their house, Frollo orders Hatchet to kill him for his treason. Hatchet says it will be fine to kill Phoebus, showing rivalry to his ex right-hand commander. Phoebus runs off along with the woman which Frollo wanted to burn, but Hatchet threw his sword, which flew straight into the former captain's back. Phoebus was heavily injured, but Esmerelda found him and took him to Quasimodo, who hid him away from Frollo and his guards. Frollo came back, pretending not to know about Quasimodo's plans to save the city. However, Frollo made Quasimodo think that he shall attack Esmerelda with thousands of troops. Quasimodo and Phoebus go to rescue the gypsies and Esmerelda, not noticing that Frollo is following from behind. Frollo captures the gypsies, Quasimodo and Phoebus, intending to burn Esmerelda or enslave her if she accepts him. Phoebus was put by Frollo and Hatchet into a cage, while Hatchet actively guards him. However, Quasimodo rescues Phoebus. Hatchet tries to kill Phoebus as the two fight one another to the death. However, Quasimodo comes to declare that Frollo is dead infront of Hatchet. Accepting defeat, Hatchet walks to his jail.

Personality[]

Commander Hatchet enjoys the suffering of other people, notably gypsies. He is a cold hearted, cruel commander of massive forces of terror. He develops rivalry with Phoebus from the start of the fanfilm, willing to kill him with pleasure and claiming he enjoys it pretty much.

Hatchet however does respect his superior Frollo, even being disappointed of his death to a point he accepts prison time. His actions were ruthless and he will always remain a sociopathic warlord on the side of evil.

Trivia[]

  • He is based on Phoebus from the books; they both serve Judge Frollo and they never show signs of redemption. They are also both commanders who seek to exterminate the gypsies for Frollo.
