Crimson Changelings, also known as Zygon ponies, are the main antagonistic species of the My Little Pony/Doctor Who crossover webcomic Recall the Time of No Return. They are a shapeshifting species who serve Queen Brotonia in her plan to completely subjugate and destroy ponies. They are known for their war against Equestria.
Physiology[]
Zygon ponies resemble the Zygons from Doctor Who. They are red and resemble limbs of cephalopods. They are covered in suckers. They are shaped like centaurs, with a humanoid upper body and the lower body of a pony. They have humanoid arms and hands, and can hold weapons. According to Doctor Hooves, they have sacks of poison on the underside of their tongues. They can spit burning acid from their mouths.
Their most notable power within the story is shapeshifting. They can convincingly take the physical form of a pony to masquerade undetected for long periods of time as such, even infiltrating the resistance. None have been shown talking without their heads taking the form of pony heads.
Brotonia is the only member of the species to be shown to have wings, be able to fly, and use magic outside of shapeshifting.

Background[]
Seven years before the future shown in the story, Empress Twilight Sparkle went to war against the Crimson Changelings. Twilight was secretly captured and preserved in a cocoon, and Brotonia took her place by shapeshifting into her form. Many of the royal guards were replaced by Zygons, and Brotonia carried out a genocide of ponies under the false pretense of suspicion of being Crimson Changelings. She kept a Zygon facility underneath the royal castle where ponies were kept in cocoons, and a "reformation center" where real ponies were swapped with Zygon impostors.
Numerous Zygons were passing as ponies among the civilians of Equestria. The Zygons' goal was eventually to secretly completely replace ponies and completely take over Equestria as part of their territory. One of them had replaced Night Star in the resistance.
Recall the Time of No Return[]
Fluttershy, Rarity, Roseluck, and Doctor Hooves were captured and brought to the underground facility so they could be preserved in cocoons. Hooves suspected that there were disguised Zygon ponies in the room with them. He used a device to make them reveal their true forms. Those in the room discovered that the guards, thought to be ponies, were actually Zygons ponies. He came to the conclusion that Empress Twilight Sparkle was facilitating a Zygon invasion. After having a conversation with his assistant, Roseluck, he determined that the real Twilight was inside the large cocoon in the room and the queen of the Zygons was ruling as Twilight for seven years.
Pinkie Pie's "Pinkie Sense" went off and she got the sense that something bad was about to happen in the resistance headquarters, which indicated to Spike that "Night Star" was not to be trusted. She then dropped her disguise and revealed herself as a Zygon. Spike pulled out a sword to fight and the Zygon spit burning acid which dissolved the sword. Spike threw the Zygon around the room with his immense strength, making the Zygon lose consciousness.
Spike came to the conclusion that Twilight had betrayed everyone in Equestria in favor of the Zygons. Spike presented the fallen Zygon to resistance-supporting citizens of Equestria as proof that Empress Twilight was facilitating a Zygon invasion and was irredeemable. He used this to rally the citizens.
Brotonia lead an army of Zygon ponies to attack the resistance, which Fluttershy spotted from afar. Hooves brought the alicorn Gold Lily to open the cocoon the real Empress Twilight was locked in. Brotonia revealed her true form, but keeping a mimicry of Twilight's head. Twilight then fought Brotonia and killed her, sacrificing herself in the process.
Afterwards, presumably the Zygon invasion was weakened and gradually dispelled.
