Daniel Franklin is the villainous protagonist of the 2009 Creepypasta "The Diary Of A Madman." He is a young man who, upon discovering a mysterious journal and beginning to write in it, develops a thirst for human blood, thus turning into a crazed killer and cannibal.
Story Role[]
The story begins with Daniel's immediate self-introduction in the opening journal entry, dated May 26, 2009. Greeting the reader merely with his name, he explains that he had recently found an old-fashioned leather book, of which he is using to write his messages, at a garage sale in Eatonville, Florida, which is likely the setting of the story, as it is the only location mentioned. Daniel elaborates that he bought the book from a kind old lady, whose name is later revealed to be Susan Anderson. After introducing his cat, named Bartolome, he concludes the entry.
The next day, Daniel makes a new entry, where it is revealed that he works a dead-end job as an office worker. He laments about the day being mundane and uneventful, while also expressing his slight irritation of his "best friend," a traditional family man named Mark, who has a wife named Mona and a toddler daughter named Justine. Daniel then states his newfound belief that some human beings are considered "disposable," describing acquaintances in his life that he views as "robotic creatures," including Ashley, a "cougar," and Stuart, a believer in paranormal activity. He even says that they would be much better off dead. However, Daniel immediately writes afterwards his self-shock and disgust at himself for writing such terrible things about his co-workers. He later stops by Susan's house to share cookies and tea. Afterwards, Daniel closes the entry, still asking himself how he could make such horrible comments about his friends.
In the next entry, another day later (May 28), Daniel rambles about a "dream" he had about reliving a vivid childhood memory. As he describes the flashback, more about his character is revealed: His father was a butcher, and he had a teenage sister named Alexis, with whom he was very close. In the memory, Daniel notices that one of his father's knives is missing. He then finds himself going into Alexis' room, finding her lying on her bed, her arms laying on either side and blood dripping from them, revealing that she had killed herself with the knife, of which Daniel expresses his confusion, since she never seemed to show any signs of suicidal ideation. Upon discovering her lifeless body, Daniel proceeded to dip his finger in her blood and then put it in his mouth, finding the taste to be rather pleasant. Eventually, Daniel's mother entered the room and screamed, horrified at the sight of Alexis' body.
Daniel concludes the third entry after finishing his explanation about the dream, stating that he can still feel the taste of his sister's "juice." More than a week passes before the next entry, until June 9. Daniel reveals that Mark had died in a car crash a week before Justine's fifth birthday, and that his funeral service will take place on Sunday. After writing about him feeling emotionally unwell from Mark's death, grieving the loss of his friend and having to take some days off from work, Daniel gets a papercut, and he discusses the taste of his own blood as he consumes it, only to catch himself yet again.
Three days later, in entry five, Daniel says that he has been fired from his job, and that he drank his own blood. The exact reason for his termination is never specified, though it likely had something to do with his drastic change in behavior. Daniel happily writes about how much he enjoys the "sweet" taste, and even goes on to wonder what other people's blood would taste like. In his next and final entry, another three days later (June 15), at 6:00 PM, Daniel declares that he will sample another person's blood, specifically that of Susan. He even makes the absurd self-justification that she is already old and close to dying anyway. Daniel then says he will bring "Mark" and "Alexis" (his nicknames for a knife and a glass) to help with the experiment. At 7:02 PM, he arrives at Susan's house, where she welcomes him inside and, according to Daniel, doesn't question his wielding of the glass and knife, even going as far as to putting them on her cabinet. This doesn't bother Daniel at first, for he has a pen to prick Susan's finger, which should satisfy him enough. When he does, however, he finds her blood to be just as "delicious," as he anticipated, if not tastier, and he starts to crave more. "-The ink has taken on a red tinge, as if tainted by some outside liquid-," on the page implies the paper is getting covered in Susan's blood. Daniel then realizes that his memory-dream was a future premonition of where he was going to get Susan's blood from: the veins and artery, and that Alexis was supposedly showing him where he could find the "juice." The entry ends with more blood dripping onto the page and Daniel madly declaring he must have more, indicating his act of cutting Susan for her blood.
There is a bonus entry, taking place on July 1 (three days before the story's publication), written by Martin Simpson of Eatonville. The contents of this entry imply that the entire cycle, as shown by Daniel, is about to repeat again, though this time through Martin.
