David Reyes and "Wally" are the main protagonists of the 2024 short heist comedy film CHUMPS by Lagarto Films.[1] They are a duo of bumbling criminals who try to rob a gas station despite misplacing their gear.
David is portrayed by Manolo Gutiérrez, who also played Howard Warden in Nine on The Line, and Wally is played by Rogelio Marzan.
Personalities[]
David and Wally appear to have polar opposite personalities. David acts overly tough, while Wally is more sensitive and even a little cowardly, being more hesitant to go through with committing crimes with his friend. Additionally, while Wally comes off as chill and somewhat laid back, David has a much shorter temper, getting mad at Wally for the mistakes he makes. In the end, both characters are dimwitted in their own way, since they both are prone to failing at their goal in humorous ways.
Biography[]
David is hanging out at his and Wally's safehouse, drinking beer and eating some pizza, when Wally arrives. Wally tells David that he has the supplies for a robbery they are planning to pull off, but they quickly discover that they actually have a teddy bear, a cane, and a note saying, "Get better, Gramps!" A cut to an office shows an old man receiving a package but is shocked to find the box filled with weapons and a rope. David is furious at Wally for mixing up the packages, though he quickly gets over it since Wally at least brought them masks. The two then ride their bikes down to the local gas station, which they plan to rob. Wally is nervous, but David annoyedly tells him to tough it out, so he just goes along.
The two barge into the store and confront the clerk, who refuses to tell David where the money is. David asks Wally for the cane, but even though Wally has the cane, he decides to give him another similar-shaped object, which David takes and knocks the clerk unconscious. David snaps at Wally again, but their argument is cut short when a cop walks into the store. The two quickly hide, but Wally leaves the bear for the officer to find. Confused, the officer searches the seemingly empty store. David distracts the officer for as long as possible, but Wally quickly blows their cover, forcing them to flee quickly while holding off the cop. David and Wally manage to get out of the store, and much to David's amusement, Wally reveals he managed to get a bag of money while they were hiding. Their victory, however, is short-lived, as the cop rushes at David and starts viciously beating him with his baton. Wally forces the officer off of David using the cane, and the two run away as fast as they can.
After they escape, David and Wally get into another argument over leaving the money behind. Then, by sheer coincidence, the officer comes charging towards them, with the moneybag in one hand, and his baton in the other. David tries to intimidate the officer, only to get pepper sprayed. This allows the officer cuff David, while Wally snatches the bag and runs off, much to David's frustration. Sometime later, Wally is at a bar, celebrating his escape, and sees the news bulletin that David has been officially charged for his crimes. Wally laughs to himself, feeling pleased that, despite his lack of intelligence or competence, he still managed to escape justice.
