Deutches Reich, commonly known as Valkist Germany, is one of the main antagonists in the Hearts of Iron 4 mod, Führerreich: Legacy of the Great War, and the villainous protagonists should the player decide to play as Germany.
Following its fatal defeat in the Great War, the new Valkist Germany dreams of uniting all Germanic peoples under a single state and imposing its will. To make this a reality, it has rearmed itself militarily and is preparing to carry out its revengeful conquest of Europe and the world.
History[]
Post-Great War[]
With the ceasefire of January 1, 1919, and the subsequent signing of the Treaty of Versailles, which confirmed Germany's defeat, a series of sanctions and restrictions were imposed on Germany, including territorial losses, the most obvious being the Rhineland, which was placed under Allied control, the reduction of the German armed forces in all their forms, and the payment of heavy war reparations.
With the abdication of Kaiser Wilhelm II and the abolition of the monarchy, the former German Empire became a weak and decadent republic plagued by political and social chaos, which would experience an attempted coup d'état in 1920 by the Organisation Consul and its leader Hermann Ehrhardt. However, that would be the least of its problems when the Rhine crisis erupted, caused by delays in war reparations payments, and French troops entered Germany around the Rhineland protectorate and seized all the resources they could to obtain their “due payment.” The Germans saw this as a great disrespect to the nation and viewed the government's submissive attitude toward current events with great fury.
The Rhine crisis only exacerbated Germany's already dire economic situation following the loss of industry in the Rhineland, which sparked widespread protests throughout Germany, particularly in Bavaria, which remained in a state of emergency as it was the area most affected by the crisis. Gustav von Kahr was appointed state commissioner in Bavaria to pacify the situation. However, Kahr, together with former General Ludendorff and Ernst Röhm, attempted a coup d'état from Bavaria against the Berlin government, which was thwarted by Hans von Seeckt, leader of the Reichswehr, and Adam Dressler, Führer of the Valkist Party. The latter was appointed the new ruler of Bavaria on Seeckt's recommendation.
Wilhelm Marx took office as Reich President in June 1925, and later in 1931 Kurt von Schleicher was appointed Chancellor. Both began a center-right coalition government, and stifling the SPD government of Otto Braun in Prussia. On May 18, the Reichsexekution was ordered against Braun and Eugen Ott was installed, winning the loyalty of several dissident SPD labor unions by giving them political relevance. In April 1932, Adam Dressler won the presidential elections by a large margin, which greatly upset Marx and Schleicher, who did not want Dressler and the Valkist party to come to power. They decided to prevent this by taking advantage of the fact that they were both still acting heads of state and government. They announced a state of emergency and the blockade of the Reichstag in order to govern by decree, practically staging a coup d'état, believing that they would create a united front against Valkism and other political enemies.
By April 13, the German government imposed a Reichsexekution against Dressler and his government in Bavaria, which was rejected, declaring that the government in Berlin was illegitimate and announcing a march on Berlin to restore order in the Reich. Such statements were supported because they were backed by the general knowledge that Adam Dressler was the legitimate elected president of Germany, while the Reichswehr remained distant from the issue.
By May 29, Dressler and his paramilitaries from the Thuleschutztruppe were victorious in Berlin. Later, Dressler was sworn in as president of the Reich in the Reichstag, pledging allegiance not only to the parliament but to the entire German people. Over the next few days, the Reichswehr, with the support of the Valkist paramilitaries, arrested former President Marx and former Chancellor Schleicher, definitively marking the beginning of the Valkist regime in Germany.
Beginning of the Valkist regime[]
The new German government held early elections, and the Valkists gained significant public support, securing key positions such as the leadership of the Reichstag and 48 percent of the seats. They also retained emergency powers that allowed Dressler to ban all non-German parties, especially those that did not conform to Valkist nationalist thinking, and all dissidents were silenced. Shortly thereafter, Adam Dressler abolished the Reich constitution and appointed himself Führer of all Germans to mold Germany in his image.

Politics[]
Ideology[]
Our youth are fighting for us!
Valkism is an ultra-nationalist and ultra-militarist movement with a strong spiritual and metaphysical component that seeks to transform society into a new collectivist, anti-capitalist, and anti-materialist order, with a very strong state at the top through a “reconstructive revolution” that will create a new man and a new culture distinct from old conservatism or revolutionary Marxism. Valkism has a legalistic component and rejects populism and brutal despotism. They favor a strict and efficient order and a new ruling class of warrior-philosophers at the top of a natural hierarchy. Valkists are influenced by national romanticism and völkisch ideas, as well as pan-European theories. Valkists are open to technology, progress, and science, but only if they serve the state, and not the other way around. The Führer is the protector of this new society, and the Volk is the pillar on which it rests.
Government[]
The government revolves around one thing: the title of Führer. Since 1932, the Führer has been Adam Dressler, who wields absolute power (although in reality he leaves it to his subordinates). A cult of personality has developed around Dressler and his title, and Dressler has been portrayed as the face and center of Valkist ideology and Germany. Power is officially divided among a series of ministries and departments that work under the Führer to ensure a functioning state.
Military and Paramilitary[]
Wehrmacht[]
The German Armed Forces are organized under the Wehrmacht. This force includes the Heer (Army), the Kriegsmarine (Navy), and the Luftwaffe (Air Force). The armed forces will serve to unleash a revanchist war dictated by the Valkist regime and its leaders until total victory is achieved.

The Heer has reestablished itself as a more capable army under Dressler's leadership. Drawing on lessons learned from the Great War, they have devised unique strategies to wage a swift and crushing war (Blitzkrieg) against the other European powers. Therefore, due to its goal of territorial expansion and influence, the German army has expanded and increased in size, creating numerous units, recruiting millions, and increasing the overall reach of the army. The Kriegsmarine and Luftwaffe are also in a state of strengthening, with the air force concentrating on the production of fighters and (small) tactical bombers, while the navy increases the number of submarines and battleships to counter the British Royal Navy.
Thuleschutztruppe (TST)[]
Thuleschutztruppe is an elite paramilitary group created at the beginning of the party. Originally starting out as bodyguards, the TST would see exponential growth after Adam Dressler's rise as Führer of the Reich, now becoming an independent combat force and a state secret police.
