Mario (known as Devil Mario[1] when possessed) is the main antagonist of the 2005 Mario sprite animation series Power Star by Daniel Sun. He was also the main protagonist of it's prequel game Mario Combat.
He is a possessed vessel of the Boos, who was used as a pawn to carry out their wishes to wreak havoc throughout the Mushroom Kingdom and gain possession of the legendary Power Stars to bring to life their plan to destroy all life and creation in the universe.
He was voiced by Deven Mack (credited as "D-Mac"), who would later go on to voice official characters such as Chuck in Angry Birds: Summer Madness and Sonic the Hedgehog in Sonic Prime.
Appearance[]
Just like his primary counterpart, Mario is a short mustached male that wears blue overalls, brown shoes, white gloves, a red shirt, and a signature cap with an "M" in the middle. He sometimes carries a metal katana with him as well.
His eyes occasionally will glow red, being amplified even more when gaining Power Stars. When he absorbs every single Power Star in the Mushroom Kingdom, he gains a red flame-like aura that covers a vast distance.
His sprites are often in the style of Super Mario World.
Personality[]
When not possessed, Mario is seen as a hero among the Mushroom Kingdom. His personality is likely similar to his canon counterpart with the addition of being a lot more unforgiving and violent to his enemies, as he had killed Bowser in Mario Combat[2]. He seems to possess an extreme amount of willpower, as it took over dozens of Boos to finally make him succumb to their control.
Once the Boos had full control of his body, the newly born Devil Mario became extremely ruthless and sadistic toward anybody the hivemind saw as a threat. He does not seem to verbally speak much throughout the series until Power Star 4, often choosing to begin an assault once somebody stands between him and his goals. He has a degree of arrogance to himself, going as far as to monologue his plans to Luigi once he managed to collect all the Power Stars. His sadism and arrogance ultimately leads to his downfall, as after the boo hivemind killed everyone that Mario holds dear and gave control back to Mario's body briefly just out of a sadistic pleasure to torment Mario further, Mario took this opportunity to kill himself, preventing the boos from fulfilling their omnicidal ambitions.
A staple of Devil Mario's character is how often he kills his enemies in a graphically gruesome fashion. His methods of killing have ranged from snapping one's neck to completely decapitating and crushing a Toad's head.
Powers and Abilities[]
Boos[]
- Ghost physiology: The Boos are ghosts that have the ability to possess living organisms. The effectiveness of the possession depends on the willpower of the victim.
- Telepathy: The Boos are able to telepathically communicate to Mario, instilling their goals within the new vessel.
Mario[]
- Superhuman physiology: Even prior to the possession, Mario was so powerful that he alone was capable of taking down the entire Mushroom Kingdom. He can leap tremendous heights, throw punches capable of launching Bowser around, and can react to Boos capable of dodging bullets. When having Power Stars absorbed, he is able to move so fast that characters cannot keep him in their sight.
- Superhuman acrobatics: Mario is capable of wall jumping and gymnastic-like acrobatics. He can jump across buildings and weaponize his body in the form the Spin Jump, which can break solid blocks.
- Superhuman stamina: He has a seemingly endless amount of stamina as he has been shown destroying the entire Mushroom Kingdom even after Luigi recovered.
- Martial arts and weapon mastery: Mario is a master at hand-to-hand combat. He can effortlessly kill Toads with precise blows and trade blows with Luigi, even going as far as to overwhelm the latter in combat later on in the series. He is also exceptionally skilled with weaponry as well, being able to use guns and swords efficiently.
- Possession transferal: Mario can expel Boos from himself to possess other beings. He does this with the entire population of the Mushroom Kingdom to gather the rest of the Power Stars.
With Power Stars[]
- Energy emission: Mario can create powerful energy shockwaves capable of disintegrating Toads. His energy can also be augmented within his own physical abilities, with him able to emit eye lasers that slice people apart create spontaneous explosions.
- Fate manipulation: After obtaining all the Power Stars, he is able to control the fate of the universe itself.

Trivia[]
- Daniel Sun had originally planned for Bowser to be the leading spirit behind the Boo hivemind[3]. Bowser had canonically died prior in Mario Combat, which would have meant that he would turn into a Boo. However, this was scrapped by Sun for unknown reasons.
- Additionally, Mario was also originally planned to have been saved from the Boos by Luigi and Peach during the ending sequence of Power Star 4.[4]
- Devil Mario is likely inspired by Jinpachi Mishima from Tekken 5, as both are morally good people that become possessed by an unknown force of pure evil. This isn't the only possible Tekken 5 reference, because in Power Star 4, the final battle song is Sparking, the intro for Tekken 5.
