DPR United!
~ Motto of the DPR

The Donetsk People's Republic, one of the main antagonists (along with the Ukrainian Reich) in The Dark Future: Stories From the East and one of the secondary antagonists in the TDF Trilogy.

The Donetsk People’s Republic, the People’s Republic, DPR or the Separatists/Reds, a far-left military faction located in eastern Ukraine. One of the antagonist factions in The Dark future: Stories from the East that is currently at war with the Ukrainian Reich.

History[]

Pre-war, the Donetsk People's Republic was a self-proclaimed state founded in 2014, composed of Russian citizens and Russian sympathizers in eastern Ukraine. Authoritative pro-Russian protesters launched protests for the secession of the Ukrainian state and its unification with Russia, inspired by the annexation of the Crimea by the Russians. The independent state was forcibly established with the military support of Russia in the Donetsk region, which is based in Donetsk. He was under the supervision of Russian soldiers and Donetsk separatists, from the outbreak of World War III and the invasion of Ukraine even after the global nuclear war. Before the bombs fell, the militants of the People’s Republic and part of the Russian Armed Forces successfully prepared and took refuge to obtain anti-radiation equipment and weapons.

Post-war[]

After the nuclear conflict, the Donetsk People's Republic is made up of the remaining separatist militias and Russian soldiers occupying Ukraine, led by a self-appointed military commander / premier of the party called the Donetsk Republic. A minor internal conflict broke out in the faction between the National-Communist ruling party and the Marxist militants demanding the Donetsk New-soviet Socialist Republic, who were successfully defeated and expelled by the leadership and Russian Armed Forces. The faction was then easily defended with their militants without suffering heavy losses, and in 2060 they re-proclaimed the Donetsk People's Republic, whose center is still in the former city of Donetsk. They began to expand and occupy nearby stations and fallout shelters, allied with the Crimean and Luhansk People’s Republics, and formed the Novorussian Coalition. After initial successes, they ran into the army of the Ukrainian Reich and since then the 2 factions have been at war with each other.

Overview[]

Government[]

The People's Republic is a far-left Collectivist, Communist faction under the command of military commander Andrei Victorovich and his narrow Donetsk People's Council. It is a millitarized state maintained by the government under a system similar to the Soviet Union. The Communists are extremely authoritarian and have police like the KGB and keep civilians under strict surveillance. In addition, there is strong border control in the faction. They have special infiltrator and spy units loyal to the Communist government, tasked with gathering important information from the enemy or kidnapping a high-status military officer to blackmail enemy factions.

Ideology[]

The People’s Republic is a National-Communist Marxist military state that seeks to revive the industrial working class, the old Soviet and separatist ideals. A strict anti-Ukrainian, "Denazification" and Russification policy has been introduced. All Ukrainian descent were deported, killed or taken to the Gulags formed from Russian prisons, and the People’s Republic is modeled on the Soviet Union. It is a state with a totalitarian system, proclaiming strong propaganda that promotes a Russian national, Nationalist sentiment variation of the Marxist-Leninist idea.

Society[]

It is under the control of the communist government, which created a totalitarian police state that controls the People's Republic and civilians. The average citizen living in the People's Republic is unable to accept and follow the strict ideals of the regime, because those who disagree are killed or sent to labour camps by the communists. A strongly socialist, collectivist economic policy has been introduced, with the result that redistribution of wealth and equal distribution are given priority. Despite this, citizens live mostly in poverty, due to the large number of people living in the People's Republic and the scarce resources reaching few people. In addition, the government is corrupt and distributes wealth unfairly. Comfortable and rich living conditions go to those who hold the highest office, such as the government of the People's Republic, followed by the army who protect the country from foreign forces and mutants, then the communists, who are followed by the Donetsk leadership and officials of the Russian, separatist forces.

Military[]

The People’s Republic has a relatively strong army with more as 80,000 troops. The primary army of the separatists remains the Donbass Millitia, a joint army with the Luhansk and Crimean People’s Republics, which have been specialised in guerrilla warfare and tactics. The Russian Federation Armed Forces, which remained in Ukraine, joined all 3 People’s Republics, and their officers, together with the governments, formed the Red Army where they managed to recruit a large number of people. They have a well-trained military, they can fight, and their forces can repel enemy factions and mutants as well. In addition to the more than 80,000 stationed soldiers, they managed to obtain many weapons, ammunition and anti-radiation equipment even before the nuclear war. Modern assault rifles from Russia such as the AK-102, as well as other pre-war equipment and vehicles such as the T-14 tank, MI-26 combat helicopter, etc., were collected. They have separate infiltration units, whose job is to infiltrate factions like the Ukrainian Reich and are tasked with espionage or kidnapping.

In addition to the relatively well-equipped army and the number of soldiers, there are some flaws that can be exploited. The Ukrainian Reich has a much better equipped and better trained army, while the People's Republic's fighters consist of less experienced and less equipped soldiers. This is further compounded by the obsolescence of their weapons and equipment compared to the Reich, but somewhat offset by their innovation and ingenuity. In general, the separatist forces run in small numbers, and if they are not supported by a Red Army of Russian soldiers, they are easily outnumbered in battles. The Shocktroopers are a particular threat to them, but with their large numbers and modern military technology they have the upper hand and can easily defend their factions from Reich troops.
