~ Dr. Eggman to Sonic.

Dr. Ivo Robotnik, now known as Dr. Eggman, is the main antagonist of the Sonic Legacy webcomic series, and the main protagonist of the first issue of its spin-off Mobius Legacy. He is a human scientist who sought to find a cure for NIDS, but was exiled for his unethic methods, driving him to villainy in an attempt to create a perfect world. He is also Charles Hedgehog’s former colleague and Omelette’s boss.

In the official dub of the comic, he is voiced by Kyle Boyle.

Appearance[]

Prior to his exile, Robotnik wore a blue pince-nez, a white lab coat with a blue jumper under it, and black pants and boots. He is bald, but has a brown mustache.

After adopting the moniker "Eggman", he changes into his canon counterpart's appearance, and his mustache becomes shaggier than before.

Biography[]

Descension[]

Ivo Robotnik was the grandson of Professor Gerald Robotnik and a world-renowned scientist just like him. 11 years before the events of the comic series, he was working together with Professor Charles Hedgehog to better the society of Mobius. One day, they were approached by parents of a terminally ill girl Nicole. Robotnik tried to cheer Nicole up by assuring her that he could cure her from NIDS, which Charles called him out on, since NIDS was incurable. Robotnik then explained that he studied his grandfather's research on the matter and thought he could find a solution.

Ivo tried to get inside a Gaia Temple to scan the Chaos Emerald kept there, only to be kept out by its guardian, who didn't know his motivation for doing so. Ultimately, the doctor was able to bypass the guards by sneaking his robot inside and having it take scans of the mysterious gem. Using the readings, Robotnik constructed a device that could prolong Nicole's life long enough for a cure to be completed. Little did Nicole and her parents know that the doctor would plant the girl into an artificial coma and keep her in a life support machine, viewing it as curing her.

Robotnik was eventually summoned before the Mobius Council for breaking into the Gaia Temple, but was pardoned after they heard his story. After the councilmen learned what really happened to Nicole, however, they were horrified and barred the doctor from practicing science independently from that moment on. This left Robotnik in despair, as he didn't understand why his actions were treated as a crime. He then realized that for his invention to fully work, he must've used more C-Energy. Thus began his search for Chaos Emeralds, during which he adopted the moniker of "Dr. Eggman" and trapped numerous animals inside robots based on Nicole's life support machine, dubbed "Badniks", believing this to be the beginning of a true utopia.

Legacy's Prelude[]

In 1991 AG, having acquired five Chaos Emeralds, Eggman started mining operations on South Island, assisted by his robotic "daughter" Omelette. His Badniks would be engaged and fought on multiple occasions by two Mobians, Sonic the Hedgehog and Tempest the Dolphin, which Omelette informed the doctor about.

Eggman had a trap for the two set up in his main base, Scrap Brain Zone, which Sonic unknowingly led Tempest into. The doctor held the dolphin hostage and demanded Sonic would seize causing trouble if he didn't want her to die. Regardless, Sonic came to rescue Tempest, which Eggman had planned for, blowing up the bridge Sonic was standing on and sending him falling down. He then decided to use Tempest as a test subject by placing her inside his robot Alep as a power source, and found the sixth Chaos Emerald in an underground temple shortly before Sonic, who survived the fall, arrived. He used Alep to attack the hedgehog and escaped the cave before it collapsed.

Escalation[]

Arriving on Westside Island, Eggman went to the Under Ground Zone, only to find his Antlion badnik destroyed, and realized that Sonic must've been the one responsible.

In the meantime, he had his Grounder badniks take over the Mystic Cave Mobium mines to collect the valuable material. As Sonic arrived and started to destroy his minions once again, Eggman was forced to intervene and fight Sonic in his mech. He briefly managed to pin the distracted Sonic down, only to get distracted himself by Miles "Tails" Prower coming to help him, allowing Sonic to break free and knock him away, which caused the cave to collapse. As he was left in its ruins, the doctor pondered on how he could predict Sonic's next move to fight him. He contacted Omelette and ordered her to attack Castle Acorn, which Sonic was indeed visiting at the moment. The hedgehog and Princess Sally Acorn fought the attacking EggRobos, while Eggman himself infiltrated the Hidden Palace under the castle, where he discovered the final Chaos Emerald. While coming out on surface, he ended up on the castle ground and had an encounter with King Nigel and his old friend Charles, with the latter being shocked at what Robotnik had become. Even as Charles begged Ivo to stopped, he declined the offer and instead had Omelette distract the heroes as he escaped.

Later, on board the Wing Fortress, even as it was infiltrated by Sonic, Eggman and Omelette discussed their plan, which would be complete once the former brought all Chaos Emeralds to the Death Egg space station. Sonic would then break out, and as Omelette fought him, Eggman tried to escape on his spaceship, but Sonic managed to grab onto it and reach the Death Egg as well. Once the doctor discovered Sonic's presence, he deployed the Mecha Sonic robot based on the hedgehog's DNA against the intruder. After Sonic destroyed it and answered Eggman's question on why he was so determined to stop him, the doctor claimed that all his actions were done for a "just cause": recreating Mobius as a utopian society. The way he intended to accomplish it, however, was by wiping out all life on the planet with the Eraser Cannon and rebuiling it from a blank state. The doctor then entered the Death Egg Robot and used it to fight Sonic. As the Eraser Cannon was about to fire, however, Sonic got close to the Chaos Emeralds powering it and assumed the Super form. The hedgehog destroyed the robot and forced the doctor to run for his life as the Death Egg fell back to Mobius.

The Final Guardian[]

The Death Egg crash-landed on Angel Island, after which Eggman sent his Eggrobos to secure the Master Emerald located there. They were, however, stopped by Knuckles the Echidna, the island's guardian, and the doctor had to go online and start negotiations with him. He claimed to have planned to use his "Eggstation" for good purposes, only to be stopped by Sonic who he claimed was after the Master Emerald as well. After successfully tricking Knuckles, he made a deal with him not to touch the emerald and instead mine Mobium from the island.

Personality[]

Prior to the incident with Nicole, Robotnik was a kindhearted scientist who sought the best for everyone around him. After being banished for his crimes, however, he refused to acknowledge that his actions were amoral, and was convinced that he could've bring about a utopian society even if it required drastic measures. He has no second thoughts about using defenseless animals as power sources for his mechs, attacking densely populated areas just to distract the heroes or wiping out billions of lives in the name of his "utopia", and yet insists that he is right in doing so. He is also ready to manipulate strangers to further his goals, as he lied to Knuckles about the true nature of his plans and conflict with Sonic in order to make himself look innocent and frame the hedgehog as a villain.

In spite of this, Eggman seems to care enough for his henchmen as to not have them killed needlessly, as he made sure animals released from flying Badniks would land safely, and he admitted that he didn't want Omelette to get caught in the Eraser Cannon's blast, despite often beign harsh at her, though whether it's out of genuine care for her is yet to be seen. It's also hinted that he still feels remorse for having failed to cure Nicole.

Trivia[]

  • In mainstream Sonic canon, Ivo Robotnik started calling himself "Eggman" only after Sonic used this name to mock him. In Sonic Legacy, however, he adopted this moniker before meeting Sonic.
  • According to the pilot episode of Legacy Uncut, Eggman will eventually turn himself in after the events of Sonic Adventure 2. Whether this is canon to the comic series remains to be seen.
