Overview
Synopsis

What I am saying is not a request, but an order, Otari.
~ Dr. Janus forcing Otari to don harmful cybernetics.
This is a recent experiment I've spent countless years perfecting. Of course, true perfection is no longer possible now that you are fully conscious, thus your unfinished state. Regardless, the desired results have been achieved. But I am getting ahead of myself...from the moment you died, you forfeited your freedom and agency. From now on, you answer to me and MONADA. Any failure to do so will result in your permanent end.
~ Dr. Janus's introduction and first time meeting X.
This is the truth, X. This is the truth behind everything. The Insurgence, NUESTRA, MONADA, the beastmen... It's all me. Well, not exactly. It's her. Her name is IMOGENE.
~ Janus revealing she is a clone to X, presenting the IMOGENE apparatus.

Doctor Lidia Janus (original name Dr. Miranda Wilmut) is the main antagonist of OUTKAST: Youngblood.

She is the chairwoman of MONADA, a branch of the Collective that specialized in genetic experiments that would work in benefit to the Collective's military against the authoritarian NUESTRA. Dr. Janus is also responsible for the Beastman project, augmenting human and animal parts and synthesizing them into an ideal super-soldier. At the start of the series, she brings X's dead corpse and augments the beastman qualities into him, but he regained consciousness and halted the process, leaving him as an "imperfect" experiment.

However, she is eventually revealed to be a clone, a copy out of serveral other copies of the original Dr. Miranda Wilmut created to pass down information and memories for the purpose of eventually gaining control over the world by assimilating NUESTRA with the Collective. It is also revealed that Wilmut aided in NUESTRA's rise to power and the Insurgence by supplying them with the thermonuclear bomb that obliterated Tokyo in 2056.

And yet, the clone developed emotions uncommon with the other Janus clones throughout their creation, specifically and tragically jealousy, developing a twisted attraction towards X, killing others she saw as competition and more unfathomable actions.

Appearance[]

Dr. Janus is a tall woman, capping at around 6"1. She is of average build, with fair skin. She sports pink hair and eyes that have diamond-shaped pupils, with the eyes themselves having a gradient from green to pink. For a majority of the time, she bears a faint smile and a feigned affable expression, always seeming calm and friendly.

In all her appearances, she sports a long, dark grey trench coat with shoulder clips. She wears a collared white undershirt, a grey vest, a diamond shaped belt buckle, and a grey business skirt. Her leggings are iron plated with heels seemingly attached to them. Interestingly, the leggings serve as a bit of body armor, and are incredibly bullet and scratch proof.

Personality[]

X: I'm not your puppet, bitch.

Dr. Janus: That's exactly what you are.

~ Dr. Janus's attitude toward X; and her whole worldview.

She is treated as a distant ally, aiding the Youngblood team in their missions when required. However, she treated this relationship as professional, part of her job in bringing down the vice grip NUESTRA had on the world. In addition, she treated the teammates similar to trained dogs, much to the chagrin of the team. To her colleagues, she is known to be incredibly cold and distant, yet demands that her authority go unquestioned. The thin veneer of her calmness fades as one gets closer to her. On this front, Dr. Janus can be considered to be apathetic on most fronts.

This general apathy can extend to diplomacy as well. Her meetings with NUESTRA president Nandrew Estherio display she does not fear him, nor anything NUESTRA can possibly throw against the Collective. As Estherio told a close aide, Janus fears nothing because she believes herself to be above everything. Her voice certainly projects this value; when speaking, she is described to have a slow and calm voice, never raising her tone even once. This calm tone can quickly contrast to her callous ruthlessness, a trait she exhibits with no problem. Dr. Janus appears to have little to no regard for others, always demanding that her orders be followed without issue. She also has no qualms in letting people die as she sees fit. The entire Youngblood team is treated as expendable, with any member being viable to being replaced should one die in battle or if she disposes of a team member herself. Aside for a few exceptions, she exhibits no care for the people on MONADA's pay grade.

As a result of uploading her consciousness and memories onto a myriad of clones, Miranda lost sense of empathy, which resulted in her behavior and overall excessive professionalism. However, Janus is special in the fact that she managed to develop an infatuation with X, and caused her to spiral down an abusive obsession as she lost the tools to check and control her tendencies. This escalated so much that she developed jealousy towards others that entered a relationship with X, killing both Fae and Daro for simply engaging in romance with him.

Miranda herself acted in similar ways to her future Lidia incarnation, albeit with basic empathetic tendencies. She was incredibly radical in her political beliefs, seeing a world in 2056 that was beginning to crumble at the seams in an endless resource crisis and rampant demilitarization. This aligned her with what was then the NUESTRA party, a fascist political part born in the United Kingdom with plans to assimilate every country into an authoritarian single world state, and what led her to construct the bomb that would seal Japan's fate. She would come to regret this action, however, as it forced her to play the long game at such an unnecessary cost of life, hinting that she believes there is a limit to what life can be lost.

Overall, Dr. Janus (and to an extant, Miranda Wilmut) is a cold and ruthless individual behind a thin veneer of calmness and affability, a seemingly apathetic individual who will stop at nothing to get what she wants, an extremist who planned to unite the world in a single utopia and solve the resource crisis, and a woman who couldn't control her emotions, damaging others around her and psychologically scarring the object of her affection.

Powers and Abilities[]

Being the head of a scientific research branch and having a long line of clones benefitted Dr. Janus in the long run. Her general abilities and skills include:

  • Diplomacy: Throughout her career as Head and Chairwoman of the MONADA branch, directly involved with the Collective's government, she has had a lot of influence over her duties. Through her influence, she managed to be appointed by the President as an ambassador to continue ceasefire negotiations with NUESTRA, who seem more unwilling to agree. However, she has managed to push back NUESTRA advances through diplomatic coercion against NUESTRA President Nandrew Estherio, but this is mainly to keep up appearances, usually on both sides.
  • Manipulation: Again, her powers as an ambassador and diplomat have allowed her to carefully manipulate Estherio himself with him being none the wiser. This careful manipulation also led her to her high positions to even using the Collective as a puppet state whenever she sees fit. Towards the Youngblood team, Janus promises them freedom and rebirth in return for their services, which motivates them until each of them start dying one by one, which is when the facade begins to crumble. However, all of it exemplifies her incredible manipulation skills; the victims have no idea until it's too late.
  • Authority: As the Chairwoman of MONADA, therefore the leader of the Youngblood team itself, she can impose her will on any team members as she wishes. She abuses this authority quite a lot, covering up killings carried out within her own branch and the Collective, which are usually spies or dissidents. However, she does end up covering Fae's death, staging it as a desertion of the team. Unfortunately, she uses this authority to constantly subjugate and threaten X as well.
  • Psychic Power: Albeit small power. While she can't create shockwaves that devastate miles and miles of city blocks, she can still cause trouble with her ability. She's shown to implode and explode entire human beings at will. She imploded Fae in an attempt to kill her, but had to end up shooting her dead in order to fully finish the job. In addition, much later in the series, she explodes Estherio in a near instant. However, she must be in contact with her victim, and the less time she has contacting them, the less damage it does.
  • IMOGENE: IMOGENE houses the main conscience of Miranda Wilmut herself, and the machine is programmed to generate many, many copies of her body in the case that she dies or a clone no longer responds to its serial number. Each clone has minor facial detail changes to differentiate the clones from a previous carnation, mainly to conceal the clones' true identities. It usually awakens one clones at a time, but can be activated to dispense multiple clones if so desired. Each memory and trait of a previous iteration is then passed on to another, more current clone, but this usually comes at the cost of sacrificing some key traits, like displaying normal human traits or empathy.

Relationships[]

X[]

I plucked you from a dingy alleyway. I gave you the chance to earn your freedom. I ensured you would succeed in destroying NUESTRA. I brought you back to life in a new, better body. You are mine, X.
~ A notable quote that highlights her views of X

At first, Dr. Janus treated X with as much disdain as one has towards an unfinished art project or poorly made film. She belittled him and constantly undermined him because of his unfinished state, which she saw as both interesting and an insult to her years of hard work. However, as time went on, she began to experience an infatuation towards him, unable to cope or understand why she was experiencing such an unfamiliar emotion. All she know, though, was that there was competition, and she was willing to mow down whoever she could that got in the way between her and X.

Despite all that, what she experiences isn't actually love. It is still infatuation, and she still views X as her own personal property, stating multiple times throughout the story that X is hers. This is something exhibited at the very beginning, with a shock collar around X's neck and a device attached to his head that will mess with his brain when she thinks he's getting out of line. Janus wants to make clear that X, despite having other love interests that aren't her, belongs to her and no one else.

Otari

Ah, Dr. Janus... I've known her since I came back from that shootout. And believe me... you don't want to get on her bad side. Behind that smile is pure malice.
~ Otari's humorously warning X on Janus, which holds truth.

Otari is the oldest member of the team, having been one of the first successful beastman experiment (not counting Josto, as he did not make a transformation), so Janus views Otari with very high regard, seen as one of the more perfect beastmen experiments. Otari holds nothing but respect for Dr. Janus, feeling as if his service for the Collective's military as payment for her plucking his dead body from a gang shootout for a second chance. Janus does not reciprocate gratitude, and instead exploits this respect for maximum results against the enemy. Despite her facade of care towards what she sees as a perfect experiment, she still feels as if he's failed, considering his replacement of his arms after a failed NUESTRA base raid that lost the Collective Cuba.

Janus has no hesitation to force and extort Otari to do uncharacteristic actions, purely for the sake of reaching her goal. Before his battle with the Five-Star General Dragon, he was forced to don cybernetics that, while stronger and better than his previous robotic prosthetics, placed great strain on his body and mind. After he ends up paralyzed and near comatose, Janus does nothing to help him afterward and instead moves forward to ensure the destruction of NUESTRA

Daro[]

It's really a shame, Daro. (She forcefully grabs's Daro's heart) I don't want to do this, but unfortunately, X cannot have any more distractions. But it is quite a pity; you were one of the perfect ones.
~ Janus killing Daro in front of X.

As one of the later successful experiments, Janus held Daro to a very high standard, and the two even managed to have a cordial relationship with each other. However, Daro isn't so keen on Janus's actions abroad, and used to call her out on her hypocrisy until she threatened to have him sent off and killed by the Collective's secret police. As such, this caused Daro to become emotionally distant, and the actions he had to take under Janus's orders began to take a mental toll on him, breaking down in front of X after he experiences his first kiss since he came back to life.

But unlike the other members of Youngblood, Janus values Daro, attempting to keep him behind on potentially dangerous missions, especially during the Grape and Lemon fights. Unfortunately, Daro ends up falling in love with X, who begin to form a romantic relationship that becomes the victim of Dr. Janus's jealousy, in which she impulsively kills him in front of X, in that moment seeing Daro as a potential competitor that needed to be eradicated to get to X.

Trivia[]

  • Her character is largely based on Makima from the Chainsaw Man manga series, but is also influenced by Faraday from Cyberpunk: Edgerunners.
  • Her main office is at the top floor of the MONADA skyscraper, and inside the office holds a replicated mural of a (fictional) art piece created in the Renaissance era that was lost during the Insurgence. The painting depicts a boy seemingly embracing a wolf, but also brandishing a spear, as if to kill it when gaining its trust while a mysterious figure watches from the background. This holds some insight to who she is as a person, and how she treats X, the mysterious figure acting as a stand in for IMOGENE or perhaps Miranda herself.
