If I and the trucks hold back at just the right time, we can pull little Percy off the rails.
~ The Evil Truck self-discussing his plan.
Goodbye, Percy.
~ The truck to Percy, who is tumbling down the hill towards the cottage.
Stupid engine should look where he's going next time!
~ The Evil Truck cackling with pride about the accident he had just caused.

The Evil Truck is the antagonist of the Thomas & Friends fan story "Down the Hill" by Richard Jordan (Skarloey123), as well as its sequel, "Through the Fog, It Creeps."

He is voiced by numerous Thomas voice actors in a variety of adaptations of the story.

Appearance and personality[]

The truck appears similar to any ordinary troublesome truck, except he is described as much worse than the others. He is characterized as very mean and lacking any friendliness. No one is quite sure why this specific truck is the way he is, but legend has it that his dark personality derives from a manufacturing error, either a rivet out of line or a rotten wood piece. What is absolutely certain, however, is that he poses as a serious threat to most (if not all) of the engines on Sir Topham Hatt's railway.

Story[]

One brisk, foggy morning, Percy arrives at the quarry to collect his trucks for his first train down the branch line. He is so tired and groggy due to the misty atmosphere that it impairs his focus, and he ultimately does not notice himself shunting the evil truck, who had previously placed on a reserve siding to prevent engines from using him, onto his train, even unknowingly placing him at the front. The foreman also does not realize the mistake, and had the trucks loaded without thorough inspection. Eventually, Percy leaves at the scheduled time, unaware that disaster is about to strike.

As soon as Percy is running smoothly along the line, the truck begins hatching a scheme: If he and the other trucks can perfectly time an act of holding back, they can cause Percy to derail. The branch line runs along sharp curves on a steep hill, where, if an engine were to derail, they will in all likelihood slide down the hill and crash into one of the neighboring cottages, a possibility that Sir Topham Hatt has aimed to prevent by having fences built by the rails. The evil truck, aware of this detail about the line, plans to use this to his advantage. As Percy starts rounding the first bend, the truck puts on his brakes, signaling for the other trucks to hold back. The sudden jerk pulls down on Percy's rear coupler and causes his front wheels to leave the rails. The trucks then surge forward, effectively pushing Percy off the rails, sending him rolling down the hill.

Percy continues tumbling down the slope, through the fog, until he can see the outline of a house. Knowing there is nothing he can do, he shuts his eyes and prepares himself for the crash, whilst his driver and fireman jump clear. Meanwhile, the evil truck had forced the train's brakes on so he could listen to what was happening. At that moment, Percy careens into the cottage, and the truck can hear the sounds of splintering wood, as well as the screams and cries from the people inside the house. The truck cackles madly, taking pride in what he had just done, much to the horror of the other trucks, who call the truck out for lying to them about what they were going to do to Percy. The evil truck just laughs coldly as he looks upon the destruction he caused, while Percy lays battered and bruised in the rubble, now regretful for placing the evil truck at the front of his train.

The accident leaves a deep scar on the railway, even Percy, who was mended in the following days. All the lives of the people in the cottage were lost. Sir Topham Hatt shows no mercy on the evil truck and has him scrapped at once. From that point forward, Sir Topham Hatt is very careful about the character of the trucks he brought to Sodor to ensure that a tragedy like this would never happen again.

In the sequel story, "Through the Fog, It Creeps," the truck reappears as a ghost and haunts Percy.

Trivia[]

  • The Evil Truck's creator, Richard Jordan (Skarloey123), is the same creator of the villain Alfred of his series Sodor: The Dark Times.
  • A third entry to the original two stories by Jordan, titled "Troublesome," which serves as a proper conclusion to the original story, was created by fellow Thomas content creator Liam Miller.
