I've been in the basement for 495 years. It's been so lonely albeit kinda comfy.
~ Flandre Scarlet.

Flandre Scarlet is a minor antagonist in the Touhou Project franchise and a re-occuring character in various fanworks, often being depicted as an antagonist.

Appearance[]

All appearances of Flandre are either exactly like her original appearance or at least similar. She resembles a small child with blonde hair, red eyes and exotic crystal wings. She often wears a hat with a red bow on it and a red dress with a yellow bow and white collar. She also wears red shoes and white socks. In certain fan-works her outfit is slightly different. Sometimes her shirt is long-sleeved, sometimes she wears black leggings, sometimes she isn't wearing her hat.

Personality[]

There are two main types of personalities Flandre has in fanworks. The most used version is a psychopath version of Flandre. She is extremely bloodthirsty, ruthless and powerful being almost like an unstoppable force of death. She takes great pleasure in the harm she causes. The other version is more similar to her canon self, a naive child who is sweet but a little bit crazy. She respects her sister completely and the two are often depicted with Sakuya Izayoi in ways that resemble a typical mother and daughters relationship. Flandre is known for causing tons of mischief around the mansion. Despite her immaturity she is highly intelligent, being able to immediately see through Marisa's claims that she was Reimu Hakurei.

Biography[]

Flandre was born 5 years later than Remilia, her older sister. Prior to the events of the main storyline she was not allowed outside and was usually kept in the basement, only being allowed outside on rare occasions. In some versions of this story, this is because of her destructive powers, in others it's because of Remilia's concern for Flandre's safety. Sometimes its even both. After being in the basement for 495 years, Reimu Hakurei and Marisa Kirisame entered the Scarlet Devil Mansion for a second time after defeating Remilia, and encountered Flandre. In some versions, the amount of time she spent in the basement drove her completely insane, causing her to aggressively attack the heroes immediately. In others (as well as canon), she asked them to play with her due to her loneliness in the basement. After that, Marisa made a promise to come over from time to time and play with her.

Fanworks[]

In the fan-made anime Fantasy Kaleidoscope, Flandre is very similar to her canon self, with notable differences however. She is portrayed as more sympathetic in her flashback scene, showing all the other residents of the Mansion, including her sister, shut the door on her, leaving her alone in her room. She also claims that the toys she played with broke too quickly, and she wanted a real playmate. This version also appears to be more insane, as after Marisa accepted Flandre's wish to play she broke into a fit of maniacal laughter. At some point, Flandre confronts Remilia with the help of Marisa and Reimu, and fights Remilia in an attempt to prove that she's grown up. However, despite Flandre's superior strength, she is bested in combat by her more experienced sister, and as Remilia prepares the final hit, she closes her eyes. When she opens them however, she is shocked by how Remilia is hugging her. Remilia states that she finally saw that Flandre had grown up, and that when Reimu and Marisa are defeated they can play outside to their hearts content. The two join forces against Reimu and Marisa and engage in battle again. After the events of SA a party is held at the Moriya Shrine, but Flandre crashes it in anger and accuses Remilia of eating her pudding.

In the Luna Nights fangame, Flandre appears as the true final boss where it is revealed that Nitori was secretly a disguised Flandre collecting crystals. Flandre reveals that Remilia left her out on this alternate version of the Scarlet Devil Mansion, and that Sakuya has indirectly helped Flandre by collecting all the crystals, which give her more strength. After being defeated by Sakuya, Flandre is confronted by Remilia who assures she will let Flandre join in next time.

In Flandre vs Marx, an animation, Flandre meets Marx from the Kirby series and challenges Marx to a play-fight. Marx accepts and the two engage in battle. Flandre uses her danmakufu, cloning ability and giant fire sword while Marx uses his black holes, cutters and lasers. When Flandre is cut in half by Marx, she uses her ability on him while her body is falling and it blows him up. Remilia arrives and berates Flandre, asking where she's been. Flandre explains with great remorse she got too carried away and accidentally destroyed him. The two sisters head back to the mansion before the sun comes out. However, in most crossovers, Marx is known as Flandre's pet, often being drawn held in her arms.

In Sr Pelo's animation, Flandre appears right after the false credits where Marisa and Reimu fistbump. This causes a complete charisma break in Remilia and Sakuya, with Remilia screaming like a goat. She lands in a squeaky sound and does a 'paper scissors rock' gesture. However, when she does the rock gesture, Reimu and Marisa suddenly (and comedically) explode milliseconds before the frame freezes and the credits kick in.

In Frisk/Chara vs Sakuya Izayoi, Flandre makes a cameo appearance twice when Frisk and Chara accidentally land in the basement due to Sakuya slicing a hole in the floor.

Trivia[]

  • Due to Flandre's character, she is often compared to Marx due to their crystal wings and Yoshikage Kira due to their ability to blow anything up
  • Flandre may or may not be the inspiration for Klee from Genshin Impact as the two share many similarities:
    • They both have blonde hair and red eyes
    • They both are known for explosion related abilities
    • They both are known for their rather childish attributes despite being far older than they look
    • They both are known for being in 'solitary confinement' due to their lack of full control over their abilities
    • They both have German names
  • Flandre, despite her lack of appearances in official canon works, is a very common character in fanworks, appearing in many Undertale fan-made boss battles, music videos, memes, animations and Friday Night Funkin' mods.
  • It is unknown why Flandre has her wings but there are many theories why. One theory suggests it is a birth defect, others suggest she was born without wings and fashioned them herself. One even says they are the source/seal of her powers.
  • Unlike Remilia Scarlet, Flandre is immune to most of the things vampires are weak to, being able to survive holy crosses and sunlight. It is shown she DOES have a weakness: Flowing water such as rivers or oceans. However, this is a minor weakness as it simply weakens her powers and is not fatal to her.
  • Flandre is commonly associated with Ronald McDonald due to a music video involving Ronald singing Flandre's theme song.
