~ Flowey's most famous quote. |
Flowey the Flower is one of the two tritagonists (alongside Starlo) of the UNDERTALE fan-made prequel Undertale Yellow. He is a seemingly friendly and helpful flower that aims to help Clover escape to the surface. However, it's later revealed that it's all an act and he is trying to use Clover to get the souls of the other children to himself, continuously resetting the timeline and trapping Clover in a loop until he gets what he wants. He is a non-canonical version of the original Flowey.
He acts as the main antagonist and final boss of the Neutral Route, one of the two tritagonists (alongside Starlo) of the Pacifist Route and the deuteragonist of the Genocide Route.
Biography[]
Background[]
Flowey's origins mirror those in UNDERTALE, where he was once the Prince of the Underground, Asriel Dreemurr. After his death, he was reincarnated in a flower with determination thanks to Dr. Alphys’s experiments but quickly realised he lacked the ability to feel love, causing Flowey to fall into a deep depression. However, Flowey would soon discover his power to SAVE and Reload, essentially giving him complete control over the timeline. While he initially used his powers for good, Flowey got bored of predicting people and started killing others for his own amusement, exterminating the Underground’s population several times over.
Becoming obsessed with the idea of absorbing the human souls and becoming a god, Flowey patiently waited until a human fell underground. He aimed to manipulate them into helping him.
This human turned out to be Clover. However, much to Flowey's misfortune, Clover would never leave the ruins and preferred to happily live with Toriel forever. Flowey then decided to interfere, which worked for a time. However, regardless of his efforts, Clover would never reach Asgore.
Flowey had to completely change Clover's route, accomplished by tampering with some puzzles. This led to Clover falling down a hole and getting stuck in the Dark Ruins.
Neutral Route[]
After greeting them in the Dark Ruins, Flowey follows Clover throughout the game, always maintaining a helpful facade and reminding him of the importance of reaching Agore's castle.
Near the end of their journey, Clover receives a letter from Martlet, asking him to meet her on the hotel roof. Flowey asks him not to listen to it but is ignored.
When they confronts Martlet, she says she still sees good in them and asks them to live with her, which Clover inevitably accepts. When everything seems to be fine, a vine appears out of nowhere and stabs Martlet in the back, killing her instantly. Flowey then appears, furious with Clover, saying that they had a simple plan, but they could not follow it.
Flowey ends by saying that he is tired of waiting and decides to take Clover's soul at that moment. Clover, however, resists, which amuses Flowey.
The flower then decides to talk about how he watched Clover hundreds of times, how every time he reset because Clover always lived forever with Toriel, he talked about how he influenced Clover to leave there, but it always ended with Clover dying. He then ends up talking that he was the one who messed with the puzzle and that he has been manipulating Clover's entire journey. The two begin to fight inside Flowey's mind, where he continually tries to absorb their soul, but Clover always refuses. Clover manages to momentarily escape to the back of Flowey's mind, where they see a glimpse of their past, but the safety doesn't last long as they are quickly found.
The two again begin to fight, and now Clover faces Meta Flowey, but the fight is a stalemate, as they cannot truly defeat Flowey, and they are too determined to let their soul be absorbed. Realising this, Flowey angrily stares at the screen, realising the player's presence but quickly gives up.
Flowey gets bored with the fight and decides to stop it, saying that torturing Clover is fun for a while until it gets boring, noting that the fight had no stakes as well, being all in his mind. Flowey says he will reset the timeline and asks Clover to make better decisions next time, finishing by saying that he has no choice but to help him as he commands their fate.
Pacifist Route[]
Flowey remains friendly and helpful throughout the route, but still always discourages Clover from caring about the other monsters, always preaching that he is only being used and that he should only care about getting to Asgore's castle.
When Ceroba is revealed to be a traitor and intends to use Clover's soul to carry on Chujin's legacy, Flowey is quite happy and smug, saying "I told you so" to Clover. But even though he has always tried to make Clover ignore everything and just go to Asgore's castle, he recognizes that Ceroba is a problem that needs to be dealt with, in addition to being very curious to see how things will unfold.
After the fight against Ceroba, Clover is given the option of killing her or sparing her, if he kills her, Clover will have his confrontation with Asgore, where he will inevitably end up losing and having his soul trapped.
If he spares her, Clover will have a conversation with his friends, and then decide to sacrifice his own soul for the benefit of the monsters, while he decides this, it is possible to hear Flowey, who is pleading Clover not to do this, because all that matters is getting to Asgore, which he doesn't hear.
Regardless of how Clover dies, Flowey will find himself thinking about what to do, whether he can reset and try again or wait for the next human and let Clover rest in peace. Later on in the credits cutscene, displaying Frisk’s fight against Omega Flowey many years later, Clover is shown responding to their call for help and assisting in the fight against their former friend.
Genocide Route[]
Initially, Flowey is pretty pumped up about Clover wiping out every monster they encounter. However, he's a bit uneasy about Clover's fixation on exterminating everyone.
He swiftly reminds Clover that he can't be killed because he still holds the reins of the timeline. So, whether he likes it or not, they're stuck being partners. Their relationship takes a nosedive over time. Flowey just wants Clover to reach Asgore, but the human remains indifferent, persistently slaughtering more monsters. Flowey's dissatisfaction becomes more apparent everytime Clover dies. Normally, Flowey offers some encouragement, but in the Genocide Route, he mocks and cracks jokes.
Things escalate at the Steamworks, where Flowey witnesses Clover acting recklessly, even forcing him to tackle tasks and solve puzzles for him. Impatience creeps in as Clover goes on a rampage, obliterating all the robots in the area, with Flowey beckoning them to stop killing as they're wasting time.
After Martlet's death, Flowey loses it; the entire Underground is on lockdown, hindering him from reaching Asgore. In a fit of rage, he accidentally spills the beans about his true intentions of seizing human souls. In an attempt to end Clover once and for all, Flowey tries to take control with Save and Load. However, all his attacks and escape efforts are thwarted as Clover, now the most determined creature in the Underground, can load over his save files.
Flowey completely falls apart, screaming about how much he despises Clover and how spending time with him was the worst period of his existence. He confesses that the only satisfaction he felt was watching Clover meet his end, concluding that Clover will die inevitably. As such, Flowey laughs in despair as Clover shoots him to pieces, killing him.
Personality[]
Initially, Flowey is much different from how he acts in UNDERTALE, here he is nice, friendly, and selfless, wanting to aid Clover in reaching Asgore and crossing the barrier. He is obsessed with this goal, always reminding Clover of it and constantly telling him that nothing and no one matters and that they shouldn't get distracted, which sometimes leads to him slipping and momentarily losing his cool.
However, his willingness to help and friendliness is a facade, Flowey doesn't care in the slightest for Clover and just sees him as a tool to aid him in his mission. When his true colors are revealed, Flowey unveils a sadistic, violent, ruthless, egotistical, selfish, and manipulative personality. he finds joy in seeing Clover suffering or causing suffering in others. He's also shown to be exceptionally arrogant, always boasting to Clover about his ability to Save and Load, reinforcing the idea that he's the one in charge to them.
Despite this, it's shown in the Genocide route that Flowey is a coward. He seems to get increasingly uneasy as Clover grows in strength, constantly reassuring himself of his power and when they finally overpower him, Flowey goes on a villainous breakdown, proclaiming his hatred for Clover as he releases his frustration over all those failed runs.
Trivia[]
- When saving at the same save point multiple times, Flowey gets increasingly impatient, changing his dialogue.
- When other characters (specifically Ceroba or Martlet) are following Clover, Flowey will not appear when interacting with save points.
- Flowey has unique dialogue during no-save runs, becoming increasingly frustrated with Clover over the course of the game. If the player has died 0 times before the final save point, Flowey will sarcastically ask Clover to "die a little" as his services are basically useless.
