~ Frank expressing his anger towards Rodrick's defiance while attempting to choke him. |
Frank Heffley is one of the main antagonists (alongside Susan) in the Diary of a Wimpy Kid fan comic Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dysfunctional Perspective by MoonSXG1.
He is the abusive patriarch of the Heffley family, being the husband of Susan Heffley and the father of Rodrick, Greg and Manny. Despising his eldest son Rodrick for his defiance, he regularly abused him in fits of rage to the point where Greg grew conditioned to accept the violence in the household as normal.
Personality[]
Unlike the original Frank Heffley, who is apathetic but loving towards his family, this version of Frank is aggressive and violent. He holds high expectations towards manlihood which he wants to instil upon his sons, which he initially pushed onto Rodrick due to wanting him to be his ideal eldest child. However due to Rodrick's inability to live up to his expectations, their relationship soured to the point of having frequent arguments. While he initially shed tears in remorse after the first time he abused Rodrick, he gradually began to enjoy abusing him to the point of feeling sadistic enjoyment towards harming him and feeling no remorse when almost killing him. He is willing to listen to his wife when she stops him from going too far, but only because she threatens him with the possibility of the family's perfect image being tarnished. He does not hold the same level of hatred towards Greg and Manny, believing that they will turn out better than Rodrick, whom he considered a failure.
It's implied that Frank became the way he was from being abused by his father, reflecting the abuse he suffered onto Rodrick. When his brother Joe told the story about their father, Frank felt deeply uncomfortable and urged them to change the subject before forcibly ending the conversation when he brought up their traumatic fight.
Biography[]
Early Life[]
Frank lived a rough childhood alongside his brothers Gary and Joe. At the age of 5, his parents divorced and his father became abusive, especially towards Frank who angered him for not "keeping himself quiet". One time, they ended up breaking a glass and their father started yelling at them in rage. He and Frank argued for a long time until he ended up harming Frank in a way that scarred him for life.
In adulthood, he married Susan and bore his first son, Rodrick. While he initially treated him well at first, after Greg was born he was enthusiastic to raise Rodrick into being a man due to him being his eldest son. But no matter how hard he tried, Rodrick felt like he was unable to enjoy any interests he was given and became a problem child, struggling with his grades and always trying to live up to his father's high expectations. One day, after the two got into a fight, Rodrick was unable to handle his father's pressure any longer and said something hurtful (which he would later forget about) in a fit of anger. This caused Frank to beat him up, feeling proud of what he had done but yet regretful at the same time. He eventually gave up on trying to change Rodrick and used him as a scapegoat to take out all of his frustrations onto in the form of violent abuse. At the same time, he and Susan tried to raise Greg and Manny to be better, but Greg witnessed the abuse towards his older brother so frequently that he ended up accepting the abuse to be a normal part of life and started writing in his journal to cope. Manny was also affected by the abuse, drawing unsettling pictures depicting his perspective of the family's abuse towards Rodrick.
Contemporary History[]
During a family breakfast, Frank and Rodrick got into an argument towards the latter's band, and it escalated to the point where he took a glass and broke it on Rodrick's head, leaving him bleeding and agonized. As Susan tried to treat Rodrick's injury while blaming him for starting the fight, Frank looked at his bloodied hand feeling that it was worth it, telling Rodrick that he was aiming to split his skull open and threatening to kill him if he called an ambulance. After Greg returned from school, Frank advised him not to be like Rodrick.
A few days later, the Heffleys went to visit Frank's brother Joe, with Susan making Frank and Rodrick come up with excuses to hide the truth behind their injuries. During the family gathering, Joe (along with Gary, whom had to stay in his house after getting divorced) began to chat about their family history. They eventually started to bring up their childhood and how their father treated them, especially Frank. Rodrick urged them to give more information about the story, making Frank increasingly uncomfortable. Just as they were about to describe Frank's fight with his father, he shut down the conversation by hitting the table and tried to change the subject. When the Heffleys got back home, Frank yelled at Rodrick for attempting to embarrass him in front of his relatives. After Rodrick called himself a "less loser version" of him, Frank attempted to choke him to death. Susan, refusing to lift a finger, urged Greg and Manny to leave the room before stopping Frank as Rodrick was about to suffocate, victim-blaming Rodrick for refusing to be silent and admonishing him as a bad example for his brothers, while calling Frank out for his actions due to how it would end up affecting their reputation. When Greg went to sleep later, he had a nightmare about Rodrick lying on the floor in a pool of blood, while Frank grabbed his arm.
After Greg and Rodrick came back home after a rainy day, Greg talked about the fight he had with Bryce Anderson earlier prior to Rodrick picking him up, and Rodrick later made an impression of Susan. When Greg challenged him to imitate Frank, Rodrick raised his voice and started yelling akin to Frank. Unfamiliar with that version of him, Greg believed his impression to be an exaggeration and that Frank would never treat him like that, before Rodrick challenged him to talk to Frank so he would understand. When Frank returned home with Manny, Greg told his father about how he had been beaten up in school, but to Rodrick's surprise Frank advised Greg to defend himself and expressed concern towards the incident. Afterward, Greg boasted about how Rodrick was wrong about Frank, but he had an angry outburst after how Frank treated Greg better than himself, and attempted to hit Greg in a fit of rage over him being luckier than him, but stopped himself in a fit of remorse.
Concerned towards his older brother, Greg wondered about Frank and Rodrick's relationship so he snooped through the family's photo album. After they both came back home later during the day, Greg noticed the car keys Frank was holding to be covered in blood, so he ran to the bathroom with a first-aid kit. Rodrick, bleeding from his injuries, yelled at Greg to leave him alone, but he tried to help him anyway willing to hear out his perspective. Rodrick told him about how Frank tried to raise him into becoming a man since Greg was born, and how the argument they had caused their relationship to sour irreparably. Rodrick told him about how he had tried to create the illusion of his perfect eldest son in his head, so he tried to distance himself from Greg so he wouldn't involve him in his problems. Greg told him that it wasn't his fault and that Frank must've had his reasons. When Rodrick was about to leave, Greg apologized for being insensitive earlier, but Rodrick refused to blame him and commended him for starting to listen to his problems.
After Greg bonded further with Rodrick and his bandmates, Bill was about to leave the house when he noticed Frank. The two men asked each other about their ages, with Frank believing that Bill wasn't a contributing member to society, but Bill rebutted by asking the same to him, suspicious towards how he had been treating Rodrick. Frank angrily admonished Rodrick for inviting his bandmates to his house and blamed them for starting the argument that got his head injured, but Susan stopped him by telling him that she invited them in the first place. Frank let go, telling Rodrick that he was lucky. After their fight, Greg looked over his journal, noticing Rodrick's shift in personality when Frank wasn't around and how happy he was with his friends. Remembering Frank blaming the bandmates in his argument, Greg recalled the argument they had during breakfast, seeing how Frank yelled at Rodrick over how he trusted his bandmates over his own father, before Rodrick told him that he hated him, culminating in Frank breaking the glass over Rodrick's head in a fit of anger. Realizing how blind he had been all along, Greg took the page where he claimed their fighting was "just the usual" and ripped it out.
Having a similar nightmare after his visit to Holly Hills' house, Greg noticed Frank and Rodrick having another argument. Still horrified by the nightmare, Greg interrupted the fight by asking Rodrick to drive him to school. During the ride, Rodrick thanked Greg for stopping the argument and saving his life.
