| ~ Phone Guy’s last words on his Night 5 message before faking his death. |
Fritz Smith, also known as Purple Guy, Murderer or even Phone Guy is the main antagonist of the supposed old 2014 build of Five Nights at Freddy's 3. As the third entry used to be the final game in the series, Fritz is the main villain of the FNaF trilogy as a whole as Scott Cawthon seemingly intended in the beginning. In reality, the game itself is part of an ARG, and is actually a remake of Tyler Ahlström's The Return to Freddy's.
Fritz is the head of security of Fazbear Entertainment, once fired in Five Nights at Freddy's 2 and rehired after the events of the first Five Nights at Freddy's game, so he himself could hire security guards for the animatronics to kill. As a senior employee of Fazbear Entertainment, Fritz gives advice for the new night guards at Freddy Fazbear's Pizza (such as Mike Schmidt) on the behavior of the animatronics and survival tactics against them. He essentially acts as the game's tutorial. In actuality, Fritz is a serial killer who usually targets younger victims, dressed in a yellow mascot suit resembling Freddy Fazbear. He took the lives of five children in 1987, one of which, Golden Freddy, always followed him and made him go insane. At the end of the 2014 build of Five Nights at Freddy's 3, Fritz fakes his death in his last phone call and breaks into the pizzeria to kill Mike Schmidt personally. In the end, Fritz is arrested by the police and finally fired for good.
He is voiced by ToonsterGames95, a developer who worked on the original The Return to Freddy's series.
Appearance[]
Murderer, as seen in Night 6 of the game.
It is unknown how Fritz Smith actually looked like, as the only time he is seen outside of the mini-games he is wearing a Yellow Bear suit that doesn't reveal any part of his actual appearance. In the mini-games, the murderer appears as a bright pink figure that lacks pupils, almost like in Take Cake to the Children and Foxy Go! Go! Go! In this game, however, his silhouette seems to resemble Purple Guy’s final FNaF3 sprites.
As the Yellow Bear, Fritz is shown wearing an old mascot costume with an appearance almost identical to the mainline Five Nights at Freddy's Golden Freddy's appearance in FNaF 1. Instead of having empty eyesockets with white pinpricks, both of the costume's eyes are completely missing. Similar to Freddy Fazbear, the yellow suit sports a black bow tie and top hat, except his hat seems to have holes and tears while it is leaning on the left side of his head.
Personality[]
Fritz himself is relatively calm and does not show any signs of concern or fear until Night 5, when he expresses paranoia and obsession. When talking to Mike, he really does appear to be a generally optimistic, compassionate, and respectful man. That, however, is just a facade. Just like his modern day counterpart, the Murderer is depicted as an intimidating, sadistic, ruthless, remorseless, cruel and heartless sociopath with seemingly no redeeming qualities. He calculates and plots his atrocious murders and perpetuates them efficiently and stealthily while remaining uncaught by the authorities. He is shown to be very sadistic throughout all of the trilogy’s mini-games, usually smiling while killing kids.
He is also shown to be a very manipulative backstabber, which is shown with how he treats Mike Schmidt like a friend and even shows some kind of sympathy towards him, only to then try and kill him in the end. Fritz gives lots of helpful advice about surviving the night, presumably because he already assumes Schmidt wouldn’t survive until the end of his week. When he realises Mike is close to uncovering his crimes, Smith fakes his own death and breaks into the restaurant to murder Mike personally.
Fritz suffers from having too big of an ego as he is extremely arrogant and overconfident with his authority; he was just playing with Mike Schmidt although the final showdown, even though he could’ve easily take the power off and kill Mike right away. This led to the police eventually arriving, Mike surviving the night and Smith himself being captured.
Biography[]
Backstory[]
The murderer's origins are unknown, the only thing clear is that he murdered five children prior to the events of the story and began going under the false identity "Fritz Smith" at some point. The reason why he changed his name remains unclear, but it is most likely due to his criminal background. Fritz rose to head of security at the Fazbear Entertainment corporation. He often wore a yellow Freddy Fazbear suit, the exact origin and purpose of which is unknown.
Considering the game was supposedly made by Scott before the actual William Afton's backstory was established, it is unknown if he had a family or co-founded Fazbear Entertainment like his canonical counterpart, or since he's a version of Vincent from The Return to Freddy's it is unknown if Grön Takaliken exists in this universe and if Fritz ever knew him.
Five Nights at Freddy's 2[]
At some point before 1987, as one of the Freddy's locations featuring classic Freddy Fazbear was operating, Fritz brutally took the life of an innocent child. It is likely that this happened before the beginning of Smith's working career, and that is why he committed the murder right at the door of the restaurant (and not in a closed room, as he usually does). The child would later go on to possess The Sockpuppet, a mascot doll Fritz would later contol.
One night, at June 26th of 1987, five children would attend a birthday party at the new and improved Freddy Fazbear's Pizza. Fritz would then take advantage of this and put on the Yellow Bear suit to gain the children's trust and subsequently lure them one by one. The minigames suggest that he succeeded at taking the lives of four kids personally, but as the fifth one escaped, Fritz locked him in the Prize Corner. The Puppet, subservient to Fritz, murdered the fifth victim personally, and the kid would later possess the very same suit Fritz was wearing, which led to Smith's implied paranoia. After that, a person with an unknown name would be hired as the night guard. After his week finished, he was moved to the day shift while another nightguard took his gig. During this, the building was put on lock down after the revelation that someone used a yellow suit. This led to an investigation, the capture and imprisonment of the suspect, however, apparently, the real culprit was still at large. The second guard was meanwhile moved to the dayshift and (thanks to Smith's advice) became the Bite of 87' victim, while Fritz himself would take the job. This led to Fritz removing the bodies and deactivating the animatronics one by one, while using The Sockpuppet to lure them. One of the last mascots he disabled was Freddy Fazbear attempting to "save" the kids. Smith was fired by the end of his first day on the job, due to "tampering with the animatronics" and "odor".
Five Nights at Freddy's[]
A much smaller location, even though closed and abandoned, would eventually start hiring new employees. Even though Fritz himself was absent and the main character Mike Schmidt was guided by a different Phone Guy, the traces of Smith's crimes were everywhere across the game. His victims, still under his control, always come to life at night to haunt down the nightguards and stuff them in a Fazbear suit. After Mike Schmidt was fired for the same reasons Smith was years ago, Fritz himself, in his undying loyalty, would be re-hired for the job and return to work at Freddy's. He would feature in many training tapes for new recruits, as he continued to record messages he left for employees in the night shift.
While he recovered his past position as the Head of Security, Fritz took advantage of his status to lure several security guards to the pizzeria so that they would be killed by the animatronics, which are still somehow being controlled by him. This could also assume that Fritz has been doing this for nearly two decades, implying that there were numerous other security guards who fell under the murderer's tricks.
Five Nights at Freddy's 3 (2014)[]
In Five Nights at Freddy's 3 (2014), Fritz Smith guides the player through a series of phone calls, where he teaches Mike Schmidt about the behavior of the different animatronics residing within the establishment. On the 5th phone call, he calls Mike and seems scared, frightened due to him thinking he's being followed by some sort of entity, perhaps a ghost. The phone call ends abruptly.
Fritz Smith returns as Murderer on the 6th night. At 3 AM, the player can hear the sound of someone breaking in, and if they change their camera to the Dining Area, they'll immediately find Murderer. At the end of the night, Murderer is apprehended by police forces and placed under arrest. He is identified as 'Fritz Smith' due to old paperwork being found in a 'purple car parked near the restaurant at the time of the attack'.

Quotes[]
Said by Fritz Smith[]
| “ | Uhh, hello? Hello, hello? Oh, umm, hey, Mike! It’s good to see you, uhh, working at Freddy’s again! Uhh, things have definitely changed quite a bit since the last time you’ve been here. Umm, for starters, we’ve made a couple renovations to the place I think you really gonna like. Uh, i-if you pull up your camera monitor, you’ll notice a couple new spots that we have now… which includes the Prize Corner and the ceiling ve-vents right above you… you can’t miss it! Umm, if you check the Show Stage, y-you’ll definitely see some… uhh, f-familiar faces! Uhh, w-we took these fellas from the old location and gave them a little bit a maintenance work and n-now they’re all good as new! Uhh, they don’t act weird near adults anymore, and… they’re… uhh, definitely not gonna try to bite someone’s forehead off now! *laughs* Umm… but… there’s definitely just… one thing. Umm, for some reason that w-we don’t quite understand, uhh, they keep trying to get into the Security Office, which is where you’re at right now. And nothing seems to stop them. Sometimes we’ve even found them pounding on the Office’s doors. Uhh, they’ll get into the office one way or another, and… if, they see you, uhh… oh, God forbid I tell you what it is, uhh, but I don’t even want to go into details. Now, I know what you’re thinking. And, believe me, there’s no need to worry. Because, we have— uhhh, we have a solution! I guess. Umm, somewhere in your Office is a spare Freddy head. Umm, if you wear it while an animatronic is in your Office, uhh, chances are it will ignore you… and… go about its day. If not, then they’ll, uhhh… try to stuff you in one of the Fazbear Suits we have in the Backstage. Which is… p-probably not a pleasant experience, uhh, to say the least! Uhh, so, y-yeah, if you see anyone come through, just… put on the mask! Although I should warn you, you p-probably shouldn’t wear it for too long. That thing is full of stuff that we d— haven’t even cleaned out, like, s-s-seriously. Uhhh, h— oh yeah! One last thing! Uhh, we still don’t have a p-proper power generator… so we’re still running on the same old one. This means, you’re still gonna have to be on a limited power supply. Which… you know, shouldn’t be too much of a problem, really, remember the last time! Uhh, with that being said, uhhh, you should be golden! Uhh, so to recap: check your cameras, use your mask if anything goes wrong, and, uhhh… also make sure to check your power! I’ll see you tomorrow, good luck! |

| “ | Uhh, hello, hello! See? That wasn’t— that wasn’t too bad! I hope you didn’t worry too much last night. Hey, at least you know: the worst is behind you now! *chuckles* Umm, okay. Now I’m gonna have to… break some… unfortunate news to you. Uhh, when I said the animatronics were fully operational, umm… well, I was wrong. Uhh, we had a couple engineers come in today to do some maintenance work on them and they just… couldn’t seem to act right. Uh, some of them were going crazy w-when faced with bright lights, you know? Uhh, we may think it— m-m-maybe due to some faulty wiring? But, by the time someone came to that conclusion, nearly everyone had left the building already. Umm, Foxy’s probably the most aggressive one out of all them. He absolutely cannot bear any lights. P-probably due to all these years he… spent lurking behind these curtains, you know? So, I-I-I cannot trust this enough, but you should really be starting to pay more and more attention to the cameras if you don’t already. Umm, everyone seems to be more and more active as the week progresses, you know? Uhh, I-I hope you didn’t leave out that Freddy mask, because… umm, don’t forget to use it all through the night. Umm, well, I wish you the best for the night! S-stay safe. I’ll talk to you tomorrow! |

| “ | Uhh, hello? Hey, you’re doing great! Uhh, I-I’m gonna be short with my messages from now on. Uh, Freddy and his friends might have already started moving as we speak, so you might wanna start checking up on the cameras, you know… Uhh, hey, listen— I don’t want you to start panicking or anything, right? But, t-t-things haven’t really gotten any better technical-wise. Uhh, I doubt we’re gonna be able to solve their problems f-for the end of the week, or… God forbid, the end of this month, you know? Oh, and before I forget! May sure to check the Prize Counter! Uhh, the animatronic there… the cat one, was described to be very curious by some of the engineers that were there yesterday. Uhh, with his smaller size, uhhh… he might crawl inside the ceiling vent. So I’d watch out for that if I were you, you know? I think doesn’t react very well with lights, l-like Foxy. Uhh, try to use that as your advantage. Umm, o-o-okay, I-I-I’ll leave you to it! |

| “ | Uhh, hello? Uh, hello? Oh, hey, uhh, night four! I knew you could do it! Uhh, you’ve been really getting a hand in this despite the new stuff, you know? Oh, umm… we had a new a-animatronic character come in today. Uhh, he’s what— from one of our oldest pizzerias, you know… the one where, uhh… you know, that happened. Uhh, he’s in a pretty bad shape though, so he’s been placed in the Backstage, waiting for repairs. Uhhh, maybe you could see him on the cameras? Uh, I d-don’t think he should be a problem, really, but… if he does get up though, I t-think the mask probably work on him. You know, just repeat your routine. Uhhh, alright, well any— anyway, hang tight! The week’s almost over. Um, have a good one, good night! |

Trivia[]
- Although the game is a remake of The Return to Freddy's, in which his true name is Vincent and he has a different backstory, Five Nights at Freddy's 3 (2014) attempts to pose as part of the actual FNaF series, so his true name may possibly be "William Afton" if this game were to line up with rest of Scott Cawthon's canon.
- Even though Murderer is a man in the yellow bear costume, in the game we still can see parts of a metal endoskeleton in there, presumably because the game takes into account that Scott Cawthon was never good at modelling realistic humans.
- He is one of the few Purple Guy iterations to actually stay alive by the end of his story.
- Fritz, despite being the Phone Guy of the game, isn't the same character as the Phone Guy we know from the very first Five Nights at Freddy’s. As the original Phone Guy is implied to die, Fritz Smith recovered his position after the end of Mike Schmidt’s week at Freddy Fazbear’s.
- In the GameJolt comments, Bloxx revealed that his Night 5 phone call in this game actually foreshadows his return on Night 6 (due to lack of any other sound).
- His age by the time of the game is unknown, but since he started his career before 1987, he seems to be over 50.
- He seems to know Mike Schmidt personally.
- Unlike his TRtF counterpart, Fritz doesn’t care about the player wearing the Freddy mask. He also doesn’t cause any hallucinations, which makes sense, considering he’s just a human being in a mascot costume.
- Just like Fritz Smith from the original The Return To Freddy's, he shares many similar traits with Steve Raglan from the Five Nights at Freddy’s film. Both characters are using fake names, are seemingly friendly to Mike Schmidt, both communicate with him through phone calls, both hire security guards to their doom, and both, in the end, come to assassinate Mike in a yellow suit personally in the climax which they fail to do.
