~ German Reich to his future self. |
Germanyball, formerly known as German Reichball, is both the main protagonist and the main antagonist of the Countryballs comic The Greatest Enemy by Reddit users u/selenocystein and u/Hinadira. After his defeat in World War II and subsequent punishment for the crimes against humanity he committed, he atoned for his villainy and turned his life around, but had to come face to face with his past one night.
Biography[]
Past[]
As the German Reich, Germany was a fascist state responsible for the outbreak of World War II and many atrocities, including the Holocaust and the deaths of millions of people the Nazi regime considered "subhuman". Eventually, he was defeated and killed by the Allied Forces, specifically the Great Britain, the Soviet Union and the United States. As Germany's soul left his body, he saw all the deaths and suffering he caused with perfect clarity. He came to a horrible realization that he had wasted his life on doing evil and could only beg that this would not be the end of him and that he could make amends.
Suddenly, Germany came back to life, but he was no longer an independent country, only occupied territory, suffering retribution brought upon by his enemies. Four years later, Germany was reformed into the capitalist West Germany and communist East Germany, stuck in the opposite camps of the Cold War. The division lasted for four decades until finally, two Germanies were reunited. Since then, Germany remained part of Europe, coexisting peacefully with his neighbours and living in prosperity and progress.
The Greatest Enemy[]
One night, as Germany was working, he heard a knock at his door and went to open it. It turned out that the one who paid him a visit was his past self, revived through quantum effects. In spite of his future self's insistence that he should leave, as he knew nothing about how the world had changed, German Reich retorted that he would lead the nation to glory. This caused Germany to cry out "NEIN! NEVER AGAIN!" and tell his surprised Nazi self the story of his death, atonement and redemption. This didn't impress past Germany, who lashed out at his future self, wounding him with a knife and ranting about how he was nothing but a capitalist puppet stuck in "decadent degeneracy" without him. Modern Germany then retorted that the reason German Reich lost was that he lacked love, compassion, friendship and empathy, something he eventually learned to value. He regained confidence and grapped past Germany's knife, preparing to strike his enemy. German Reich tried to psychologically pressure the republic, claiming that all his "friends" were simply using him, and almost succeeded, preparing to engulf and take over Germany once more. He, however, refused to give up and landed the fatal blow, though his Nazi self promised that he'd be back.
After hastily bandaging his wounds, Germany heard Poland's voice at his door, and opened it to talk to her. He asked Poland if she actually liked him, to which she replied with "Maybe a bit?", leaving Germany content with this answer.
