I have a rendezvous with Death at some disputed barricade, when Spring comes back with rustling shade and apple-blossoms fill the air. I have a rendezvous with Death when Spring brings back blue days and fair. It may be he shall take my hand and lead me into his dark land and close my eyes and quench my breath. It may be I shall pass him still. I have a rendezvous with Death on some scarred slope of battered hill, when Spring comes round again this year and the first meadow-flowers appear. God knows 'twere better to be deep pillowed in silk and scented down, where Love throbs out in blissful sleep, pulse nigh to pulse, and breath to breath, where hushed awakenings are dear. But I've a rendezvous with Death at midnight in some flaming town, when Spring trips north again this year, and I to my pledged word am true, I shall not fail that rendezvous.
~ Gharst's phrase from the poem
Not your decision?! You were part of that damned council! You were there when I was summoned! You spoke against me! I remember it all. If it's a crime for saving my men, what you did WAS HERESY!
~ Gharst's villainous breakdown while berating Ra'ak for his actions against him.
There is always a choice!
~ Gharst's iconic line to anyone said to have no choice before correcting them.
Whatever I saw in the chamber, be a delusion, vision or message eaten at my core. The future I saw was not what I wanted. I cannot be the one to live that life. Responsible for millions. I am but a spent warrior who lost all he had. The vision was right about one thing. War is coming. And humanity will be the ones to lead the charge to protect us all. Letting them fight alone is not my attention. Sanghelios, as broken as it is, stands behind them. You and I must do so as well. But both of us know what will come if our purpose will be brought before. What we found on your ring will be crucial to them. And I must see this solved in person.
~ Gharst to Descent about humanity's purpose by the Forerunners and plan for Requiem.

Biography[]

Original Timeline[]

Past[]

Before becoming the leader of Legion, Gharst was a member of the Covenant during the days of the Human-Covenant War. He is a commander of thousands of his fellow Sangheili forces under the Sangheili High Councilor, Ra'ak who is unsatisfied with him. To help impress the councilor, he went on to many battles during the war. In one of his battles, he faced against Reed who takes advantage of his past beford beginning a Energy Sword duel against each other. Eventually both of them are at the edge of collapse and his men rescue and heal him up then continues on his mission to have Ra'ak satisfied of his work. However, despite everything he did to pleased the councilor, Ra'ak's carelessness proves too much as he considered Gharst a heretic and had his men slaughtered as ordered, traumatizing Gharst from this unfortunate incident while being left as the only survivor. During those four years, he would face other great torments that would humiliate him bringing him in much great pain during his days of war with lies, treachery and even treason from those wronging him.

Elites of War: Chronicles[]

Years after the Covenant War, he begins to increase the numbers of his coalition during the years before his war against the High Council of the Alliance, hierarchs whose title served as the successors of Kaidons for betraying him by speaking against him with their treason, treachery and lies towards him while exposing their Covenant-like agenda which shows how the Alliance is no different from the Covenant and was able to wage war against them including anyone else who is opposing him.

He intercepted a transmission from Colonel Swagger and the other superiors being nothing more but cowardice and greed just to give the Black Raiders the advantage to cause much destruction instead of actually sending in reinforcements. Capturing Swagger, he and Jan soon arrived to see the devastation of the aftermath of a battle between an entire new UNSC team of Sephoran Guards, and the Black Raiders without any reinforcements due to Colonel Swagger's negligence then search for any survivors. Finding the survivor, Gregory Recko who would become a member of Legion, he explained about the sins committed by Swagger and the other superiors, exposing him directly to Recko and offers him a choice to kill the incompetent and traitorous excuse of a colonel and thus he executed him.

Around that time, he begins one brutal against the Alliance after killing Batonee, an old friend whom he knew and eventually betrayed and invaded the colony of Ute'k Mardee. His forces destroyed the majority of the Alliance military who opposed the Legionaries' oppression as well as the large supply of the Alliance ships and soon had the majority of the civilians join Legion as well as allowing the civilians to leave hoping that the Alliance wouldn't find them before ordering Jan to glass the planet with the remaining civilians who did not join or escape are left to die from the glassing.

After the successful failure of the Alliance to stop the Legionaries, he was able to pay Ra'ak, a member of the Council of the Alliance, a visit by capturing then torment him for his actions of whom he became as of now as well as killing his family and pet. Ra'ak was soon left on a human planet being paralyzed and to be under watch. He then predicts that in time, Ra'ak would soon learn the errors of his ways and recruits many to the Legion and see that he is indeed right and admits a darkness is comming and they will prepard fof it. He then promise that he will conquer the galaxy even if he will have to destroy it to prevent anyone else from claiming it.

He later enters 'Rikatee's tower who was expecting him and have their discussion about their past and reason. 'Rikatee then asked why he came to spare him with a response he wanted him to see how he felt in his eyes, eyes of war that the people of the Alliance will meet their end and declaring his Legion his own people, own family. When 'Rikatee shows disbelief in his ideals, he tells him that he sees the outcome coming here and gives him an ultimatum to leave or die, forcing him to abandon his tower telling him the gods may have pity on his soul before saying he doesn't have a soul and lets out a villainous laugh with Gregory coming out of hiding to find it entertaining. After having tower establish its connection to the Legion's network and learning most of the archives based on unknown Forerunner origin, he soon has contact with Lumier who also opposes the UNSC and welcomes him aboard a frigate. He later made contzct with Krata where anothrr Legion base is established but also had difficulties while also discovering the Forerunner origins. Gharst wishes Krata for the base to be completely finished when it is under Legion control as he is looking forward to it.

Elites of War[]

Gharst begins his preparations for his invasion of Sanghelios to defeat the Sangheili Council after being told by Jan about them making a move against them. They would prepare for the strike force to make the final blow against the Council to end their tyranny. However, when they have indications of the Sephoran Guard making their arrival, they change their plans to wait for the moment for the Alliance to be weaken from their war again the Sephorans. While such, they gather up the Legionaries where they arrived with the high amount of vehicles and weapons that are required to be enough to wage a final war against the Alliance.

During that time as speculated, Sanghelios is under invasion of the hostile UNSC forces under Reed's command as a defiance against the ceasefire between Humanity and Sangheili. With tactics continuing to change, Gharst commissioned Jan to have the Legion send out a frigate to escort the Sangheili passengers out of the planet before ordering the fleet to glass Sanghelios while he makes his approach to a colony to invade and conquer. Eventually, he invaded and succeeded in conquering the colony while Sanghelios becomes glassed.

After the events on Sanghelios, he resumed his ongoing war against the Alliance and the UNSC to ensure the Legion will be the dominant force in the galaxy.

Exile Timeline[]

Past[]

During the days of the Covenant similar to the old timeline in the reboot, he was a member of the Covenant in the Human-Covenant War who rose up into a Shipmaster in the Fleet of Particular Justice under Thel's leadership. At one point, he was tasked with securing the Pillar of Autumn and insisted on sending infrantfy to support. As he arrived, the Pillar of Autumn was almost entirely abandoned with some staying behind, including Jacob Keyes. He was then ordered to hunt down escape pods and stranded UNSC personal on the Installation. With some help of an unnamed female UNSC personal he captured and interrogated during his hunt, he gain an advantage to capture Keyes and transferred him and the remaining captives he spared to the Truth and Reconciliation. He would then speak with Keyes which he described as a "hard man to read" but has confidence in him which he compares it to his quality for his company.

Upon the Flood outbreak, Gharst soon refused to take orders from Thel to prevent his crew from getting killed by the Flood which made him a suspect of heresy. Because of his refusal as well as Thel's failure to stop the Master Chief from destroying the Halo, he and the other Shipmasters were accused of committing heresy and also himself accused assaulting on a high councilor. He was eventually arrested and confined in a cell at High Charity. At one point, his guard attacked him in a sadistic manner of watching him suffer.

He would then heard the news of Thel being stripped of his rank but gain the title of Arbiter and how he defeated Sesa and his rebellion and capturing the Monitor, Guilty Spark while he have would have a hatred towards him for the situation he is in. Despite this, he had nothing else to fear as he waits for his rendezvous with death.

Elites of War: Exile[]

During his confinement at the detention cell, he makes a conversation with a fellow Sangheili prisoner, Rima 'Guramee, was a weapons master who committed heresy in favor of trying to save his race as they both made their discussion about why both of them are here and the state of the Covenant and the San'Shyuum. This conversation eventually provokes their guard to almost kill Gharst. Gharst was able to knock him out however, and disguises himself as the guard. He explains that he would be able to escape High Charity to seek shelter by the time the Sangheili become devoid of patrol and granted Rima's permission to come with him after he tells him about his cousin who would help. On his way, he would stay hidden from a duo of Sangheili soldiers, Kuz and Nad'Fu who both talked about their opinions about the Jiralahanae and them replacing their leadership before making their leave. Gharst soon makes his attempt to find more about Rima before he gets caught by Akera, yet mistakes him for the guard. He tricks Akera about "Rak 'Latomee" giving him info about himself. Akera soon learn the info about Gharst and goes to the detention facility where he would mistake the guard for the real deal only for Gharst to assassinate him. He then gives Akera's armor to Rima and finishes off the guard for his failure.

As the two explored through the city, they discussion about the facts during the war against humanity and the reason for fighting them and how the Covenant could fall if humans continue to rise up against their Great Journey. They get through a passage to a Sangheili quarter where they find a storage chamber to take shelter where he finds not only Covenant weapons but also UNSC weapons. After telling how this would be use for war, it was not enough due to not enough ammunition and small numbers to gain more time to strike against the San'Shyuum. Rima became concern, arguing that he could get himself killed while having an army of murderers to his side but he assured that sacrifice is necessary and in need of outcasts for necessary help. They soon get into an argument over his ideals of the ideas of the war, but reminded that he needed an asset from a weapon master and given enough complex of the authority where there are others being held prisoner who are humans due to free Covenant fugitives was abandoned. While he made a lie to him, he intended that humans could be useful for his advantage.

Gharst soon reaches to the another detention center under guide from Rima to Kema, the warden, where he would find and persuaded the two ODSTs, despite their differences from the Covenant, as well as Kema, to his cause to regroup with Rima only to find Rima and the weapons gone. Gharst learns that Rima did this as the separatists plan to attack the San'shyuum during tonight's ceremony then witness a live net about Master Chief's arrival and the beginning of the Great Schism. He was then rescued by ONI as well as offered a pardon, a crew and a set of missions for him to do ONI's work. Though despite this, he has plans of his own.

Years after High Charity's fall and the end of the Human-Covenant War, Gharst and his forces arrived to a Forerunner installation where he learns the secrets of the rings and the Forerunner shield world Requiem. He would then capture the monitor while persuading him to his side. Even when he is tasked on killing Jul. he intends on claiming Requiem from Jul's forces by capturing one of Jul's Sangheili members before allowing himself to get captured for interrogation where he was interrogated to explain his past at High Charity. Following this, this is likely that he is unable to take Requiem due to Jul known crown as the Didact's hand and remaining in control of Requiem from the following weeks and later on the planet's own destruction by being consumed into its sun months later.

Despite this, he would eventually rose up in becoming leader of the Legion to spread their hegemonic influence in their galaxy.

Elites of War: Ranged Day[]

At some point, he made an agreement with Atriox in allowing the Legion to join the Banished for their conquest and power. Despite this cooperation, this is shown to give them some hard times due to low morale and system failures plaguing every ship in the level but one Legionary, Field Marshal Ghan, remained having the skills sharped with a day to the range for target practice.

Appearance[]

In the Original Timeline, he wears a mix of black and yellow Zealot harness as leader of the Legionary Coalition as well as the similar one in Chronicles but it is a Field Marshal harness. In the Exile Timeline, he originally wears his golden Shipmaster harness during his days of the Covenant, then a custom gold and black Shipmaster harness at one point before changing back to his original one.

Personality[]

As leader of the Legion in both Original and Exile Timelines, Gharst is known to be very charismatic, intelligent, cunning and honorable when it comes to welcome those who join them and has a necessary agenda to justify the actions of one other by giving them choices to choose to make the right or wrong decisions. He is also very poetic when he comes to literature that he speaks of most notably the rendezvous. Despite this, he does show a sign of aggression, sadism and wrath when it comes to his distaste on the Alliance especially on others who wronged anyone worth to join the Legion with one example that he considered a planet under the Alliance as a pile of rock that deserve to burn from the glassing and extremely hateful for what the council did to him back in the Original Timeline with another example in the Exile Timeline that he shows hate on Thel for his actions of failure and being put to a cell after being considered a heretic.

Quotes[]

He left civilians to enemy's mercy. Running while the shells filled the sky and rained down upon them! And for what? To save twelve bureaucratic bastards who would rather see their soldiers die covering their own retreat?!
~ Gharst exposing Swagger to Recko.
Lies! We have intercepted communications from twelve frigates ready to strike upon your command. Instead, you used them to transport gold, platinum and works of art off the planet. Twelve-thousand men ready to aid were left to transport mere trinkets!
~ Gharst after Swagger tried to lie his way out of his exposition.
BATONEE: You...were like a brother to me.
GHARST: I'm no brother to you, parasite. You should've listen to your warriors and now they are all at my mercy.
BATONEE: Why?
GHARST: Your life was mine. Now I take it back. If it makes it easier, you are the last one. This blade went through all...all of them.

GHARST: Yes I am.
BATONEE:You...monster.
~ Gharst and Batonee while injuring Batonee before executing him.
Colonists of Ute'k Mardee. Your leader is pathetic excuse of a being now lies dead in a pool of his own blood. Your fleet is under my command. Your warriors are in disarray and my soldiers march through your cities. You have a choice. Let us cut down our business in peace. You'll leave this wretched world but dare to intervene and I will glass this piece of rock until there is nothing left to glass. The choice is yours.
~ Gharst making his announcement as a choice to the colonists before invading the colony.
You have been spared from the oppression of the Alliance. Thousands of those like you might be free like forces of nature. However, you might be free of rotting but your spirit, your will, has been bent by the monstrosities of the Alliance. You have a choice. You can walk away from here and hope that the Alliance won't find you, torture you and make you their slaves again. Or you can join us. Join us and you won't have to fear them. Join us and you will have your opportunity to strike back and get what you deserved. Power. Resources. Join me and we will burn them all!
~ Gharst during his second announcement after Ute'k Mardee is cleared of Alliance-rule.
GHARST: Get up! GET UP! I'm not done with you!
RA'AK: Why?! So you can humiliate me once more? You have no honor! YOU ARE NO SANGHEILI! YOU ARE A TRAITOR!
GHARST: Honor? And what of it? What has it brought you? It is a dying concept and you are paying for upholding it!
~ Gharst torturing Ra'ak
GHARST: I have devoted my life serving your damned lies! I have sacrificed everything to pleased you. And you...you brand me a heretic for saving my men?!
RA'AK: It was during the war. How could you judge me when I was simply following orders?! I HAD NO CHOICE!
GHARST: There is always a choice! You chose to murder! You chose to see their corpses fall to burn! But that was not enough. You made me watched. You made me watched a seven-thousand of my- ...My men were slaughtered. How their corpses pile in front of me. How their last image was of me standing. DOING NOTHING! But how could I when I had a rifle pointed at my head, my jaws broken and my eyes opened? Forcefully opened! I couldn't even scream to them. I couldn't even reach out.
~ Gharst and Ra'ak as Gharst explains how he feels of what Ra'ak did to bring so much torture for his injuries and the death of his men.
I will prepare you for the future even if I have to destroy you first. I won't let them have you.
~ Gharst's speech to conquer the galaxy.
GHARST; This is your last chance. Get out of my sight or I might have my soldiers shoot.
RIKATEE: May the Gods have pity on your soul.
GHARST: I have no soul.
~ Gharst kicking Rikatee out of his tower by force before laughing evilly.
GHARST:It is nearly over. Perhaps any last words before we depart?
STORM COVENANT MEMBER: You shall burn for this, Traitor!
GHARST: Perhaps. But not today.
~ Gharst hearing the last words from the Storm Covenant member.
You have dishonored your bitter. You delivered a threat and failed to execute it. You're a disgrace to all Sangheili. While you are under my command, I would have you flogged by Jackals and Grunts! I would love nothing more than keeping my word and end your miserable existence. Give me a reason not to.
~ Gharst informing the Guard of his failed promise while waiting for his reason in defense.
I see you have difficulty giving me a reason. Afterall, your honor has been lost and you're already dead in spirit. Let me ease your pain and help your body begin its Great Journey.
~ Gharst about to execute the Guard.
Unlike you, I keep my promises.
