It's been a long time, hasn't it Mario?
~ Gonzo's most famous quote
It's been a while, old friend. I still can't believe you'd betray me like that; sacrificing your own life for those two idiots. Mario and Luigi are on a quest to find the legendary Fire Flower, and I need your help. I took you out of this world; I'm gonna bring you back, and I'll make sure you won't betray me this time!
~ Gonzo lamenting about how he felt when Kermit betrayed him, before reviving him from beyond the graves.
MARIO! WHERE ARE YOU?!
~ Gonzo shouting for Mario as he is looking for Luigi, once again showing his extreme hatred of Mario.

Gonzo is the main antagonist of the Cute Mario Bros. franchise.

He serves as the titular main antagonist in The Blue Terror arc, the unseen overarching antagonist of The First Movie! and Kermit's Revenge, the overarching antagonist of Return of the Ehhs!, and Mario's Rock Band. He is also the main antagonist of The Blue Terror, and The Third Movie. He also appears as a minor character in Mario's Amnesia, though only in Mario's dream.

Gonzo is a vengeful Muppet seeking revenge on Mario and Luigi for embarrassing him. After encountering a strange black liquid that grants him power upon contact, he becomes a formidable foe. He is the arch-enemy of Mario and Luigi, as well as Kermit the Frog's former boss. Despite Bowser's initial role as the main antagonist, Gonzo proves to be even more evil, making him the true main antagonist of the series.

He was voiced by Tyler Zanon (also known as his former YouTube username MarioMario8989), who also voiced Bowser in the same series.

Biography[]

Early Life[]

Gonzo had been a victim and fanboy ever since he was beaten by bullies at school as a normal, harmless kid. He's also a huge fan of Mario and Luigi, meeting them for the first time. Mario then started calling Gonzo "ugly" and punched him after telling him to "Hit the road!" and telling him that nobody likes him. Triggered by this, Gonzo vows to get revenge and began to commit villainous acts.

Some time later, he meets a frog named Kermit who asks him to help his team defeat the Mario Bros. Kermit decides to join Gonzo's team because of what Luigi did to him, and a new life begins for the two of them.

Cute Mario Bros. series[]

Return of the Ehhs![]

He telephones Kermit and inquires if he has destroyed the Mario Brothers, to which Kermit's response is that they are his closest friends and he does not intend to destroy them, to his chagrin.

Following Kermit's betrayal, he recruits Ehh! Guy and You! Guy to eliminate the Mario Brothers. As they attempted to do so, Kermit defeated both Ehh! Guy and You! Guy due to his use of squiggly arms.

The Blue Terror[]

Dressed in a terrifying mask, he entered Mario's house. He removes his mask, revealing his true identity, which scares the brothers from his ugliness. He thinks his schemes are successful, but seems futile, and the brothers attack him and flees. Gonzo goes for a walk, hoping to become stronger than the Mario Brothers. As the walk progresses, he comes across a mysterious black liquid substance on the ground. Upon touching the liquid, he begins to experience a severe effect, becoming both more powerful and evil.

He then went insane and started a rampage in the woods, even killing a newscaster. Gonzo is now looking for Mario and Luigi so he can kill them too. While trying to find them, he discovers a portal and travels back in time from 2008 to 2007, the year where the first episode was made. Gonzo decided to change the future by stole Yoshi away from Mario and Luigi, and taught him to become Gonzo's personal assistant. He commanded Yoshi to eliminate the past versions of Mario and Luigi, but Yoshi quickly realized the truth when Mario explained that he had just raised him moments ago. This revelation caused Yoshi to turn against Gonzo, kicking him back to the present.

Mario and Luigi find themselves at the portal, where they encounter Gonzo standing up in a tree. Just as Gonzo is about to finish them off, Jack steps in, transforms into his mini form, and kicks Gonzo away to protect his two best friends. Despite Jack's powerful attack, Gonzo remains unharmed and manages to overpower Jack. With no one else to stop him, Gonzo unleashes a devastating lightning attack that ends the lives of the Mario Brothers. Unable to bear the loss of his friends, Kermit sacrifices himself by running into Gonzo's attack, saving Mario and Luigi. The brothers mourn the loss of their friend, but their grief quickly turns to anger as they engage in a fierce battle with Gonzo. Despite their efforts, Gonzo proves to be too strong and defeats them, kidnapping them and taking them away in a bag.

Gonzo brings them to his torture chamber, a pool of boiling lava where Mario and Luigi are tied up. Just as they are about to meet their end, Mickey arrives in the nick of time to rescue them. Together, Mario, Luigi, and Mickey join forces to take down Gonzo once and for all. Mickey kicks Gonzo away, Luigi jumps over a bookshelf to deliver a kick, and Mario performs a sledge kick that sends Gonzo plummeting into the lava pool, seemingly incinerating him as he screams in absolute pain. After his defeat, Mario and Luigi took Kermit's corpse and attended his funeral, where all the other visitors began to puke on his corpse upon looking at his corpse.

After Kermit's funeral, it was revealed that Gonzo survived from the lava pool and transformed into a human. As he escapes from the lava pool, he comes up with a new plan.

Mario's Rock Band![]

In this episode, Mario decides to start his own rock band with his friends after Luigi gifts him a set of rock instruments for his birthday. Mario and Bowser take on the role of guitarists, Jack Skellington becomes the lead singer, and Luigi plays the drums. They head outside to perform some rock music in hopes of grabbing people’s attention. However, a group of teenagers criticizes their performance, saying they "suck"—though Mario and Luigi hilariously misinterpret this as being called "cool." While they’re still playing, a mysterious man with glasses suddenly appears from the bushes and introduces himself as the "Musical Producer." At first, the group thinks he's just a random weirdo, but when they ask how he got there, he cryptically replies, "You don't wanna know." He then takes them to his office, where he explains that his company specializes in making terrible rock bands famous.

Later, the Musical Producer reports to his boss—who's lazily reading magazines—about Mario and his band's potential to become "biggerly" famous. He attempts to play a sample of their music using the radio, but the boss keeps pressing the wrong buttons, forcing the Producer to take over and play it himself. After hearing the band's painfully bad performance, the boss, surprisingly, is impressed and agrees to sign them. The Musical Producer returns to the band to announce they’ve been accepted, initially causing confusion, but soon the group celebrates. When Luigi asks when their first real performance will be, the Producer replies: "Today." He hands them an address and departs, leaving the band excited to perform “for all people.”

During their debut performance, the band is once again criticized—this time by two elderly audience members. Nevertheless, the Musical Producer praises their show and asks to speak with Luigi privately in his office Inside, the Producer reveals his true opinions: he believes Luigi is the coolest member of the band—not Mario. He criticizes Mario as "overrated" and egotistical. The Producer showers Luigi with compliments, calling him strong, beloved, and stylish—subtly manipulating him to gain his trust.

After Luigi leaves the office feeling flattered, the Producer remains seated, now displaying a more menacing demeanor. He boasts that now that he has Luigi’s trust, dealing with him will be easy—and that Mario will be "easy piggies." Laughing sinisterly, he removes his glasses, revealing his eyes glowing a dark bluish hue, which foreshadows his true identity.

Back outside the office, the Producer quickly opens the door and announces to the rest of the gang the good news he has to share, though Mario self-criticizes himself and even his own rock band members, saying they "suck major butt." The Producer reassures Mario that he has to understand, "the worse he is, the better — the worse he is, the more attention he'll get," which would mean he'd become popular. Jack Skellington and Bowser question Luigi's disappearance, and the Producer announces that he's coming in right now. Luigi enters from the office, now looking "cool" with sunglasses and a jacket. Luigi (under the Producer's manipulation) becomes an actively self-centered sellout jerk to his friends — even to his brother Mario. When Mario calls him a dork, Luigi chuckles and coldly responds that Mario is the dork here, and Luigi is way cooler than he'll ever be. Mario is confused, but Luigi explains that the Producer "promoted" him, saying he's way better than Mario. Once again, he acts like a jerk to him. Hurt by his words, Mario scolds Luigi, saying that he can hurt a person's feelings, and runs away crying. After Luigi and Bowser have a brief fight, the Producer tells them to stop, reminding everyone that they need to be at the "fancy British restaurant in England" at 7 o'clock.

At the concert, as Mario introduces his rock band, the Producer appears once again, informing him that he has changed the band's name from "The Rockin' Mario Bros" to "The Super Cool Awesome Luigi and Others," much to Mario’s utter dismay. As the gang starts performing, Luigi begins playing the drums perfectly. Angry, Mario calls him out and accuses him of being really rude. Offended, Luigi snaps back, saying Mario is "the one who's being rude" and is "the one who's ruining Luigi's show." Mario tries to explain that the whole band is supposed to be a team effort, not a one-man act. Luigi ends the argument by throwing his drumsticks at Mario and telling him to leave if he doesn't like him so much. Mario leaves, straining their brotherhood.

As Mario and Bowser prepare to leave the concert, the Producer randomly appears outside the door with a chair. He questions where they’re going, and Mario simply replies, “Out the door,” before they walk away. The Producer is left confused, saying that the contract doesn’t mention anything about this.

At home, Mario writes a distressing goodbye note to Luigi while shedding tears, saying Luigi is a way better musician than him, and that “it might be better if I just left and never came back.” Mario leaves the house while it's raining, lamenting that he could never be as good as Luigi, and decides to start living his life on his own, better off without him. Back in the house, Luigi watches the rain from the window, regretting his jerk behavior toward his older brother.

As for the Producer, it is likely that he went to the forest to wait for Mario, foreshadowing events in the third movie of the series.

Cute Mario Bros: The Third Movie[]

(W.I.P)

Other Appearances[]

Cute Mario Mail Time![]

He turned out to be still alive and he became a postman and was no longer a villain like he was before and redeeming himself in the last episode of the Mail Time series. Despite this, however, the Mail Time series is actually non-canon to the main Cute Mario Bros. series. So, this means that Gonzo is canonically and permanently dead, as well as permanently evil in the main CMB series.

Mario's Amnesia[]

Despite his death, he appeared in a 2017 video called Mario's Amnesia when he met Mario in the forest and was friendly towards him. However, it was quickly revealed that Gonzo's return was just part of Mario's dream, thus Gonzo remains permanently evil and deceased.

Appearance[]

Gonzo appears as a blue muppet wearing a two-button shirt with a baby chick on it, which bears a resemblance to the Baby Gonzo Plush. Upon contact with a liquid-black liquid, he appeared to be more sinister than ever. Additionally, he is shirtless, with two unruly white hairs under his eyes, and has sharper teeth with a very long tongue, even though it is made of paper. Upon obtaining the Fire Flower, his physical form still looked the same, but he is now blacker and has a spike beneath his legs.

Personality[]

Former[]

Originally, Gonzo was a harmless and shy muppet who had been a devoted fan of the Mario Brothers for a long time and wished to be friends with them and others in the kingdom. He was a tragic victim of bullying, constantly beaten up by random students who saw him as weak, leading him to accept the label of the "weakest" in the Mushroom Kingdom—everyone picked on him relentlessly.

One day, Gonzo became excited when he spotted Princess Peach congratulating Mario and Luigi for defending the kingdom from Bowser and his army. Hiding in the bushes, he watched them closely and ran up to the brothers as they headed to a V.I.P. party. Unfortunately, the encounter went badly. Mario coldly told Gonzo that someone like him was not welcome and even called him ugly. Heartbroken, Gonzo tried to share his painful experiences, but Mario dismissively told him to leave and said no one liked him.

After Mario punched him, Gonzo was left deeply traumatized and emotionally triggered. This trauma pushed him down a dark path, turning him into a villain determined to get revenge on the Mario Brothers for the way they treated him.

Despite his transformation, Gonzo often showed cowardice when trying to intimidate his enemies. For example, in "Blue Terror," he wore a poorly crafted mask to scare the brothers, but they easily defeated him, forcing him to flee in fear. Deep down, Gonzo remained insecure and wished to become stronger than Mario and Luigi. One day, while walking, Gonzo encountered a mysterious black liquid on the ground. When he touched it, the substance transformed him, altering his appearance completely.

Now more powerful and cruel than before, Gonzo lost several of those redeeming qualities he once had, becoming a far darker version of himself.

Powers and Abilities[]

Gonzo is considered the most powerful out of every antagonist of the CMB series. Gonzo gained physical strength by pummeling Mario and Luigi with little to no effort, causing electricity-based attacks, shooting powerful lightning from his palms. He apparently has an ability to revive the dead.

When he used a fire flower, his nickname became "Fire Flower Gonzo", or "Perfect Gonzo". He is assumed to be more powerful than Fire Flower Mario.

Quotes[]

Kermit: "Destroy" the Mario Brothers? No way, they're my friends, I love them!
Gonzo: What, you haven't destroyed the Mario Brothers yet?!
Kermit: No, I did not destroy the Mario Brothers.
Gonzo: You let me down, Kermit. I'm going to destroy them, on my own. Goodbye...

~ Gonzo's dismay when realizing that Kermit is betraying him.
Gonzo: The power... THE POWER, THERE'S SO MUCH POWER!!! YOU GUYS ARE DONE NOW!!!

Kermit: Yeeeaaay Gonzo, you did it! You've got the Fire Flower, raah!
Gonzo: That's right... I guess I don't need you anymore...
Kermit: Huh?
Gonzo: Thanks for all your help, Kermit! But now I get to kill you a second time!''

~ Gonzo betraying Kermit and attempts to kill him for the second time.

Trivia[]

  • Gonzo is the most evil villain in the Cute Mario Bros. series as he loves to kill, hurt and destroy for fun.
  • Gonzo is similar to Syndrome from The Incredibles, as they both were the biggest fans of the protagonists, until they turned evil and planned their revenge on the heroes.
  • He appeared one time in Puppet Pals when he was associated with the crime of robbery. He was later killed in an explosion.
  • In the intro of Cute Mario Bros. Season 5, Gonzo can be briefly seen in the "B" section. Unlike the other main characters (including Kermit), Gonzo is overlaid on the "B" separately from the others, though he is slightly faded, which makes him a somewhat memorable character.
