The Gravemind is a major antagonist and a boss in the Halo 3 fan-made campaign mod Halo 3: New Covenant. It is the leader of the Flood at Installation 02's research station.
It is voiced by Kaboose1066.
Biography[]
Past[]
This Gravemind was known to be a Precursor entity similar to the Primordial who survived the Forerunner-Precursor War and evolved into a Gravemind during the Forerunner-Flood War. After the war, it survived the firing of the Halo Array in a Forerunner Keyship where it was drifting in space for some time until it crashed onto an arctic area on the surface of Installation 02 in the year 213. With the remaining Flood forces under its command, the Gravemind sets up an assault on a research station which results to went offline and run on low power due to much damage but was proven successful after taking it over. It soon captures and tortures 767 to the brink of killing him, giving it access to the Sentinels to be fully under its control. However, due to the weather outside the station, the Flood have no means to continue their spread but remain in dormant in order to survive.
In the year 2552, a Covenant force led by the Warlord make their way to the research station, alerting the Flood to their presence. The Gravemind commands its forces to attack them and have them converted into more of the Flood. Though some of the Covenant forces fall to the Flood, the Warlord was successful of retrieving a shield generator and made his escape while the rest of the Covenant force stay on Installation 02 to begin their operations somewhere else.
Halo 3: New Covenant[]
Months after the Human-Covenant War, The Gravemind would be aware of the next incoming force this time by the UNSC with Thel as their escort on searching for a bypass module as a potential weakness to weaken the shields used by the Warlord with a shield generator. As Thel and his squad enter, they encounter a carcass of a Flood combat form and let out a roar though logic plague. It's voice was then heard asking them if they come to die or to negotiate which Thel refuses and the Gravemind summons the Flood and the corrupted Sentinels to ambush them. It then uses its logic plague to corrupt the marines into fighting each other and Thel, forcing him to shoot at the marines to put them out of their misery as he resists the logic plague influence and promises that it will never see another day.
The Gravemind send waves of its forces to stop Thel throughout the facility before and after he retrieved the bypass module and gives it to the UNSC. Eventually, Thel makes his way to the heart of the hive where he encounters and fights the Gravemind as well as more of its forces to support it. Despite its efforts, it sustains enough damage and wails in pain. Thel gains his chance as he runs to the creature, slicing a hole in it's throat with his energy sword and shoves a plasma grenade which explodes, killing the Gravemind for good. With the Gravemind deceased, the remnants of its Flood forces retreated and presumably died off by starving to death.
Trivia[]
- When the third mission was out, some noticed on how it is out of character for the Gravemind to not remember Thel and recite poetry. Eventually this Gravemind was confirmed to be a different Precursor entity rather than being the same one such as the Primordial himself.
- Strangely, it doesn't use its logic plague to convince 767 to joining it and instead tortures him to death to take control of the Sentinels for itself. This can be implied that its logic plague may not be strong enough to corrupt an AI to its will but instead uses it on the marines to drive them insane though Thel resisted the logic plague,
