Gretchen is the titular main villainess of Scooby-Doo! and the Green Chrysler. She's a hell-possessed, and sentient green and white 1959 Chrysler New Yorker. Despite being a car, Gretchen is often referred to as a female and seems to have the mannerisms of a mean-spirited girlfriend when it comes to her new owners. The sound effects for were were provided by Jill Talley.
Description[]
In the original manga and anime film, Gretchen kills anybody who poses a threat to her new owner named Dennis Raven. The relationship between the two becoming more and more disturbing as the car's corruption took control, turning him away from everyone including his parents Augustus and Miranda Raven. In the end, Gretchen's owner was killed and she seemed to express a moment of genuine grief over his death before attempting to kill the other two heroes of the film named Shaggy Rogers and Velma Dinkley.
The film also shows her killing both an assembly line inspector and the manager Mr. Boss (voiced by Jeff Bennett) of his do-it-yourself auto-repair garage by crushing them against the steering wheel with her seat, the former due to dropping cigar ash on her seat. In the book, the inspector does not appear and the garage owner Mr. Boss is run-down when Gretchen drives into his home. Another scene occurs when Dennis's girlfriend Velma Dinkley begins to choke on a tuna fish sandwich and Gretchen attempts to entrap her within the cab by locking the doors and such.
However, they fought back against her and did great damage to the car, however, Gretchen continuously repaired herself and the heroes were forced to crush her completely as Gretchen is eventually taken to a junkyard and compressed into a small cube. As the heroes watch, however, a small strand of metal in the cube suddenly springs outward, implying that Gretchen is still alive, ending the movie.
In the original manga, Shaggy Rogers is led to believe that Gretchen has made a return when he reads of the death of the surviving Teen Ninjas gang member getting run-down at a drive-in theater by a green car, implying that Gretchen has survived her presumed destruction. Shaggy fears that the evil green car is out looking for him, Velma, Fred Jones, Daphne Blake, Scooby-Doo, and everyone else who stood against her.
Manga[]
In the original manga, Gretchen Christine is accompanied by the spirit of her previous owner, Maurice Del Rey's late brother and retired American World War 2 veteran Nathan Del Rey, whose role is greatly nonexistent in the anime film adaptation, who aids her in the murders of the Teen Ninjas gang, particularly taunting the Teen Ninjas gang leaders Chad Dickson and Cree Lincoln as he kills them.
Before his suicide by exhaust fumes inside Gretchen, his six-year-old daughter, Lisa Del Rey, choked to death on a small tuna fish sandwich while sitting in that same car, and his wife, Marjorie "Marge" Del Rey (Melissa Del Rey in the film adaption), after being broken by the tragedy of their first and only daughter, soon died from carbon monoxide poisoning in the similar suicidal fashion as her callous husband, Nathan Del Rey, later had.
He is also implied to have been responsible for somehow causing the deaths of Dennis and his mother Miranda Raven (nee Weatherly) as they attempted to flee in another car. When confronted, Nathan Del Rey and Gretchen came with Dennis's father Augustus Raven dead. Following Gretchen's defeat, Maurice Del Rey seems to be taken out in the process.
