Grometheus the Fear-Bringer is a major antagonist in MoringMark's Owl House webcomics.
Like in the original show, it is a shapeshifting monster with the ability to see into it's enemies minds and transform itself into their greatest fears.
History[]
Past[]
Grom's origins are unknown, though Viney suggested that it could be prey to another creature, and that it's shapeshifting was a defense mechanism. Hundreds of years in the Boiling Isles' past, the town of Bonesborough was attacked by pirates. In order to stop them, a witch named Enna cursed herself with Grometheus to scare the pirates away. The plan worked, but Enna was seen as a monster and promptly shunned. Now with no home, Enna was forced to steal elixirs to subdue the curse. Over the years, these elixirs became less and less effective.
At some point, Grometheus came face to face with Emperor Belos. After defeating it with explosives, he took a sample of it to upgrade himself into an immortal and unstoppable shapeshifter. After the fight, Grometheus briefly transformed back into Enna.
Eventually, Grometheus was trapped underneath Hexside, and once every year it would emerge. Durring the Belos era, a student was always chosen to fight it, having to face their greatest fears. It's possible that, like in the original show, many students who had to fight Grometheus died. Like in the original show, Luz Noceda and Amity Blight fought it at one point, which was a major catalyst for their eventual relationship.
In the post-Belos era, the students would now be chosen to fight Grom by selecting paper out of a hat. The students would always rig the chosing, resulting in one of the teachers having to fight Grom. Typically this burden would fall on a teacher named Mr. Ironguts, and Milan accounts to him fighting a snake, a needle, a cthulhu, and his own mother-in-law.
Grom Factor[]
In the present day, Ayzee Noceda-Blight volunteered to fight Grometheus in order to prove herself. She attempted to kill it using a weapon developed by Edric Blight, though it was destroyed before it could be used. Using its psychic powers to see into Ayzee's mind, Grometheus transformed itself into Ayzee's mothers and insulted her, trying to emotionally break her. Several witches in the crowd tried to fight Grom off, but none were strong enough. Ironically, Ayzee's mothers actually did show up and froze Grometheus with an ice glyph.
Grom couldn't be contained for long, and it soon broke out of the ice and imprisoned several witches in pods, dooming them spend the rest of their lives living out their worst nightmares. With the help of Amity, Ayzee and Milan went to the center of Grometheus with the intention of destroying it with a glyph. However, Milan couldn't bring herself to kill Grom, as it would take Enna along with it. Thus, she used a spell to get half of Enna's curse, making herself another host for Grom.

In the months that passed, Milan had somewhat adjusted to living with her curse. However, she was unable to touch anyone, as Grom would shapeshift into that person's fears. At least, that is what Milan thought, as Grom didn't engage when Milan was touched by Muddy, her pet Griffin. but did engage when she was touched by Ayzee. Wanting to know more, Milan used magic to enter her own mind and confront Grom. In her mind, Milan came face to face with a small creature, presumably Grrometheus' offspring. Believing Grom would hunt the creatrure, Milan took it and ran from Grometheus. Grometheus chased her down, but was more concerned with its offspring than killing Milan. When Milan woke, she still did not have any answers on what Grom was.
Trivia[]
- The pods that Grometheus used to hold it's victims look very similar to the detention pit used in the original show, suggesting that they may come from the same type of magic.
