Grunty Boy

Grunty Boi is a recurring antagonist in MandJTV's YouTube videos. He is a Team Rocket grunt who used to try and ruin Michael's life before befriending him.

He frequently shows up unannounced at Michael's studio because he needs help with something or he wants to talk to him about the video's sponsor.

He is portrayed by Michael himself.

Appearance[]

Grunty Boi looks exactly like Michael. Currently he wears a Team Rocket grunt uniform. But instead of a red R on the chest area, his shirt has the letters GB on it, short for his name.

In earlier videos, he didn’t have a beard (as Micheal didn’t have one either) and he wore a backwards black baseball cap and his shirt had a big red R on his chest. In later videos, he wore a black shirt with a red R on the side of his chest.

He is aware of his resemblance to Michael as he comments on it in Team Rocket vs Team Rainbow Rocket.[2]

Personality[]

Grunty Boi is extremely mischievous. He has an obsession with Michael. He has taunted Michael by doing things such as telling him unsettling facts to scare him such as reminding Michael that he KO’d the first shiny he ever found and he will never get it back,[3] and even showing up invited to Michael’s birthday party and stealing the cake.[4]

Grunty Boi only likes when the regular Michael is in the studio and not one of Michael personalities (which is funny and ironic because he is also portrayed by Michael like the Personalities). Whenever this happens, Michael usually stays in character and doesn't break character and that annoys Grunty Boi. Especially when Michael portrays his Team Sky leader persona or his disgraced Indigo Plateau champion persona Orange since they are rude to him.

Despite him and Michael’s differences, they both share a number of things in common such as their dislike of Miltank[2] and Drowzee[5] and not leveling up Pokémon too early so that they will know stronger moves at an earlier level[6].

Grunty Boi is passionate about Team Rocket. Being very proud to be part of the gang as he takes a lot of pride in it. He is also very loyal to Giovanni.

Speaking of pride, Grunty Boi thinks of himself very highly. To the point of rating every team he has used a 10/10 just because they were used by him while the actual Michael thinks differently.[7][8]

Grunty Boi likes the mobile gacha game Raid: Shadow Legends. In videos from 2020 - 2022, whenever Michael was sponsored by the game, Grunty Boi would interrupt the video to talk with Michael about it. Believing him and Michael share a mutual interest for the game. In more recent years however, another gacha game Honkai Impact 3rd seems to have replaced the spot in Grunty Boi’s heart where Raid: Shadow Legends once stood since he has talked about that game instead in newer videos.

  • In Pokémon Let’s Go but I’m Team Rocket him shouting “Jessie!!!” at the character of the same name is a reference to Breaking Bad when Walter White yells at Jesse Pinkman.
  • In Team Rocket vs Team Rainbow Rocket Faba says that the Ultra Wormholes have gathered the toughest and meanest villains across many other worlds. Since Grunty Boi was yoinked through an Ultra Wormhole, that means he is the toughest and meanest villain in his world.
  • Despite not knowing Alola at first in Team Rocket vs Team Rainbow Rocket since he mistook Alola for Hoenn and didn’t know Alolan Marowak, he somehow knew Alolan Sandshrew/Sandslash, Alolan Grimer/Alolan Muk, Alolan Ninetales and Crabominable.
  • Grunty Boi’s “Giovanni’s never been soft, he’s always very hard” comment in Pokémon, but I’m Team Rocket implies that Giovanni suffers erectile disfunction. How Grunty Boi would know this is unclear.
  • Grunty Boi was disgusted by a Drowzee in Pokémon, but I’m Team Rocket despite the fact he not only used one in Pokémon Let’s Go but I’m Team Rocket and Team Rocket vs Rainbow Rocket, but also attempted to shiny hunt it in the former as well. This is because Michael developed a disdain for Drowzee when John made a joke about him sleeping with one in a video that came out after those two videos. He later used one in Pokémon Soul Silver, but I’m Team Rocket.
