One of my previous treasures which i have found.. A cup of golden liquid and if you drink out of it.. You are as powerful as anyone can be.
~ Harlow threatening the others to turn himself into The Bloodbird
They call me.. The Bloodbird! Now.. all this time of planning my revenge.. I am going to destroy you and rule this world starting from this island!
~ The Bloodbird revealing his need to become a deity, gain power and kill his foes

Harlow, also falsely known by his identity Mr. Harry, and known as a monster called the Bloodbird, is the main antagonist of the 2025 animated fanfilm Rio 3, a feature made by HuxRen123.

He is seemingly a friend of Carla, the daughter of the main protagonist Blu, who becomes his second archenemy, after Nigel. Firstly a false ally, Harlow reveals his true identity and masterplan of finding a treasure, reviving his own father with it and getting his revenge on Blu and Nigel.

He is voiced by Alan Tudyk, who also voiced The Duke of Weselton from the Frozen franchise.

History[]

Harlow used to be a treaasure hunter and mercenary for hire, living his life with his father looking after him. However, on the plane which crashed after Nigel's defeat which Marcel has used once, one of the smuggled birds was his father whom he loved unconditionally. As Nigel was defeated by Blu and the plane crashed, Harlow's father unfortunately died, as Harlow responded to it by becoming a greater villain and vowing to avenge him and conquer the world for his legacy and honor. He also intended to go to the Paradise Island, which is ruled by the tyrannical King Marvelo, in order to find a treasure stone which could revive his father and also give him infinite power so he could be seen as a god and he could also kill Blu more easily out of vengeance. He also changed his identity to gain a false name. Since he changed his name to Mr. Harry, the heroes couldn't suspect him as a criminal.

As Mr. Harry, the cunning mercenary and con artist was at first seen pretending to be nice to Carla, as the two become close friends for a while and he claims that he needs her and her family's help to find his way home from the Amazon forest land. Harry seemed to be Blu's loyal ally, although remaining quiet and less effective throughout their entire voyage. However, when all of the animals needed were put into the sanctuary which is secretly run by the former famous rapper turned thug and mob boss Big Snoop, who experiments on birds there, knows their entire language, can talk to them and enjoys letting them suffer and even sometimes abusing them freely. Harry helps the crew escape and joins Blu and Nigel's journey to a shelter at Paradise Island, despite the dangers on the island awaiting.

During the night, Harry and the protagonists rest the night inside the heart of the forest, deep inside. Harry and Ella prepare everyone for their sleep as they both pretend to guard their camp. However, Big Snoop comes anyway, and catches them in a large net with Cliff and Hedge's help. After that, the good guys (excluding Blu, who is now talking elsewhere to Nigel) and Gabi find themselves already on the island, while caught inside the net. Harry comes to "help them", but when Blu's family ask him to help them out as he is supposed to, Mr. Harry reveals himself as the crime lord Harlow, telling them that with his walkie talkie, he found ways to contact Big Snoop, Hedge and Cliff and train them so they will help him understand Blu and help get rid of Blu and his entire family, so he himself could betray them when needed and find the treasure. He explains to the protagonist captives the backstory about his father whom he loved very much, and he even claimed to be Nigel's fan back when Nigel was evil, just like him. Harlow confesses everything to the captives and orders Big Snoop to take them away in their cage and sacrifice them to King Marvelo, whom happily accepts this offer. While Harlow revealed his intentions, Ella also came to reveal she's in his plot and that she is Harlow's daughter and a con artist just like him. However, after Snoop took the captives away, Ella feels remorse and asks her father why he is trying to kill them despite her not agreeing to Harlow murdering them. Harlow reminds her who's incharge and tries to use fear tactics to keep her on his side. However, Blu and Nigel come to confront Harlow, and as the two fight against Harlow, Ella changes sides and helps Blu and Nigel eliminate Harlow as a threat, thus she redeems herself. Harlow however doesn't accept failure, so he drinks out of a golden magic cup and turns himself into the monstrous beast and warrior called "The Bloodbird". He smashes Blu and causes him to fly straight into the tomb in which the treasure is hidden. After relocating, then fighting and seemingly winning Blu, he successfully takes the treasure, but what he didn't know all of this time, is that the use of that treasure has a high cost, and it's not supposed to help him. Blu revealed Harlow these consequences when he recovered from injury. The treasure burnt Harlow, causing him to vanish to the underworld.

Personality[]

Harlow seems at first to be a poor elder who is trying to go home, and he seemingly helps Blu and his crew find shelter from the cruel thugs who try to hunt them down. Harlow seems to be a clever guy, with lots of advice to give the others. He also seems to be protective towards everyone, even Nigel. However, all this was a facade. In actual personality, Harlow is cunning, cruel, bloodthirsty and power hungry. He wants to be seen as a god like figure by everyone else, further hinting us that he wants to take over the entire world. Harlow was also cruel and abusive towards his own daughter Ella, who redeemed herself as the two became enemies instead of family. Harlow enjoys tormenting Blu, showing his sadistic need for vengeance and even committing acts of terrorism. However, he does seem to love his father more than anything else, vowing to avenge his death by killing Blu and his group of allies.

Trivia[]

  • He is the first Rio main antagonist to die near the end.
  • Harlow's walkie talkie was already a hint which foreshadowed Mr Harry/Harlow's true nature.
  • Besides outranking Nigel, the main villain of the franchise entirely, Nigel is the very reason why Harlow hates Blu; when Nigel was firstly defeated and the plane crashed, one of the birds inside cages who died were Harlow's father and there is no indication of the father being a true villain.
