~ The Wanderer explaining the Hellkins' nature to Katrine |
Akumi, also reffered to as Hellkin or Chthonic Footsoldiers, are the unremitting backbone of the Chthonic Empire and the main antagonistic species of the Deadskullable canonicity. A ruthless, calculating armed force, the Hellkin impose Engar's will within and beyond the Empire's borders. Even at lower rankings in the Chthonic Military, footsoldiers make habits out of harassing captives and overseeing mass burnings being carried out. Hellkins serve as an extension of Zombros' presence, encouraging compliance in their occupants. They will often take advantage of their superior equipment and sanquinity.
One of the five base sub races of the Chthonic species, no Akuma is left unmarked by Hell's warping energy and technology. The race as a whole has been reengineered and bred to the Council's liking. Hellkin Footsodiers are the first of Hell's inhabitants encountered by Katrine. They were created by HeresJosh and Powermonger2003.
Types[]
Hellkin Governor[]
The wealthiest and highest grade of the Akumi caste, Hellkin governors are those few appointed with the management of operations in their respective regions. They can be distinguished by their headwear and pearl white overcoats. Directing the capture and corruption of occupied provinces, Governors work surrounded by heavy arms and Stygian Guards. They make few tactical errors on account of their fierce intellect. It's unknown what exactly qualifies a spawn to be assigned to the rank of governor, though the few in Seventh War appear untouched by the genetic modifications that so commonly misshape other members of the Hellkin social grade. For their own protection, they are armed with a shell pistol and director's staff.
Hellkin Fanatic[]
Hell Spawn deformed and corrupted by Hell's energies, throwing themselves into suicidal odds with the bare minimum of equipment. Fanatics serve both a religious and supporting role in the Hellkin hierarchy. The few who outlive the expected lifespan of a Hellkin Fanatic are repositioned as Temple Guards, leading sacrifices and watching over relics of spiritual importance. Several of them are guarding the Pentacle during Katrine's attack on Zombros' Church, where they self-detonate in a last attempt to kill her (though this only damages the Pentacle). Typically, Fanatics are equipped with guard pikes, red-gold armor plating, burst rifles, and incendiary vests.
Hellkin Captain[]
Spawns placed in areas of trust over those lower in Hell's social standing. Captain's lead batteries of Footsoldiers into engagements, directing them into favorable maneuvers against their targets. Unlike the Hellkin Governor, Captains are only identified by their headwear, a peaked cap with the Hell's Star emblem stitched into it's brim. They lead with a calculating efficiency, encouraging detachment and viciousness in their legions. Their movements are shaped and swayed by the will of the Bleeding Sun.
Hellkin Footsoldier[]
The spine and neck of the Chthonic war machine, and the base of the Akumi social hierarchy. Footsoldiers are enforcers of the Race's interests in Hell's borders. Oddly, Hellkin Footsoldiers are entrusted more equipment than any social standing above them, with that equipment including shock rifles, fragmentation grenades, shell pistols, anti-personnel mines, red-black armor plating and vests, trench knives, push daggers, breach charges, and sentry turrets. Even in capital cities, Footsoldiers serve as a policing force of sorts, overseeing the arrest and torture of "disobedients".
Biology[]
In the Seventh War novel, Katrine pries off the mask of a dead Footsoldier, describing it as "hairless and deformed...like someone pressed a lighter against a water bug's face." Beneath layers of cloth and armor plating, Hellkins are bipedal humanoids with light red skin, cockroach-like features, beady orange eyes, and scarring throughout their body, similarly to other breeds of the Chthonic race. They have saurian characteristics. Their limbs and faces are endlessly distorted by Hell's environment.
Unable to survive these effects of Hell through their own biology, Akumi have come to rely on genetic and physical engineering, with many of them dependent on respiration masks and thick layers of armor. Any assignment outside Hell is left to more hardened breeds, mainly Hellkin Fanatic and Rangers. Their uniforms are almost always plastered with the Chthonic Star. A constant reminder of their allegiances, and the consequences of betraying them.
It's unclear how exactly Akumi reproduce. Hellkin Captains have spoken of the importance of "securing the nest", hinting at spawning pools or fertilization. For the most part, Hell Spawns appear asexual, though this could simply be due to a lack of female reproductive partners. In the Deadskullable Manga, Sebastian sets fire to a Hellkin nest, killing everything within it.
