No Burgundian atomic bomb can reach the Ruhr. If one reaches the Ruhr, my name is not Göring. You can call me Meyer.
~ Hermann Göring

Hermann Göring, is a major antagonist in the Hearts of Iron IV mod The New Order: Last Days of Europe. He is the leader of the Militarist faction of the Nazi Party and the villainous protagonist in the German campaign if he successfully wins the German Civil War and becomes the Führer of Nazi Germany succeeding Adolf Hitler upon his death.

Biography[]

Early-life[]

Hermann Göring was born in 1893 in Bavaria. His father was a colonial administrator in Südwestafrika. During the First World War he became an accomplished fighter ace, leading the Red Baron's unit following his death.

Rise to prominence[]

Göring was an early follower of the NSDAP, joining in 1922. He was of considerable wealth and helped fund the party in its early days. Following the failed Beer Hall Putsch, Göring became addicted to morphine he received for injuries he sustained during the coup. Following the Nazi rise to power, Göring held many different positions, including Head of the Luftwaffe, President of the Reichstag, Plenipotentiary of the Four Year Plan, and Head of the Gestapo (which he turned over to Heinrich Himmler).

World War II[]

During WWII, Göring was in command of the Luftwaffe. He was the architect of the early aerial campaigns against Poland, France, and Britain. Under his leadership the Luftwaffe became the undisputed master of the skies over Europe. During the invasion of the Soviet Union, Göring's Luftwaffe contributed to the complete collapse of the USSR as well. As the war drew to a close Göring began working to get out of his morphine addiction. Göring was very supportive of the Luftwaffe's advancements in jet technology, leading to Germany pioneering in jet research in the future.

Post-World War II[]

Following the end of the Second World War, Göring grew tired of the lack of use for his Luftwaffe and began a terror bombing of Russia beyond the Urals to prevent any major opposition to Nazi Germany from forming. When this wasn't enough he began to do the same to Central and West Africa, reducing those territories to anarchy and chaos. Göring's constant bombings were forced to slow down following the Reich's economic collapse. Göring is believed that the collapse stemmed from a distinct lack of conquest from the German Reich. While the economy eventually somewhat stabilized, Göring's created a faction within along with Ferdinand Schörner within the NSDAP that believed that the solution for solving the economic woes was to conquer and loot other nations. This approach has been seen as a serious threat to the delicate peace between the United States and Germany, and is seen as possibly being able to cause a nuclear apocalypse due to recklessness. Göring does not care however, he believes that his plan is infallible as long as Germany keeps conquering other nations throughout the world.

In-game[]

Like with Reinhard Heydrich, Albert Speer and Martin Bormann, Göring can be nominated as Hitler's potential successor. While Göring is more likely to win the German Civil War than Heydrich is, as he will not have to worry about an alliance dedicated to stopping him from forming or Hans Speidel declaring war on him, he is still less likely to win than Speer or Bormann.

Should Göring win the civil war, however, his plans will consist of preparing for invasions of other parts of the world. These "War Plans" (0 - reconquering the territories neighboring the Reich; A - conquering the rest of Western Europe except the SS State of Burgundy; B - conquering Russia and the Triumvirate; and C - conquering the United States of America, the Empire of Japan, and Burgundy) are also accompanied by robbing the conquered economies to keep the German economy floating. Should Göring find himself unable to begin a new conquest or be forced into a ceasefire, he will face a coup by Ferdinand Schörner and a possible economic collapse due to Germany's economy being so heavily based on conquest. As his war plans will inevitably either lead to the world entering a thermonuclear war (while it is possible, although very difficult, for the player to defeat Burgundy without cheating if they are fast enough - and they will get a special event for doing so - the same is not true for Japan or the United States, who will always retaliate with nuclear weapons) or him being couped, him winning the German Civil War is considered a bad ending.

Although Göring is not meant to be able to conquer any of the three nations that War Plan C is about conquering, should Göring do so (either by cheating or using the "Göring's Wild Ride" submod), the game will create Reichskommissariats from Burgundy and the United States, although only the ones created from the United States have content. Japan, however, will instead be carved up into provisional military governments.

Trivia[]

  • In the game files, an unused super event exists that would have had Göring declare himself Kaiser. Presumably, this was meant to be a reference how he was offered the Hungarian crown in 1944 in real-life.
