Jason Vaugn is the main antagonist of Turning Red: Secrets of the Panda and a posthumous antagonist in its sequel, Turning Red: The Panda Conspiracy. He is a corrupt government agent who acts as the head of the PCA (Panda Control Agency). He is tasked with hunting down the giant red pandas (Meilin Lee and her family) to protect the city, but it is later revealed that he only cares about himself. He is also a highly devoted follower of Xióngmāo shāshǒu.
Biography[]
Prior to the events of the story, he joined the PCA, acting as the second-in-command to Mike Smith. However, due to not liking the way the PCA were doing anything, as well as only caring about the profit, he decides to overthrow Mike by tricking the government into thinking Mike had committed treason.
Jason Vaugn is introduced meeting Mei's friends outside the school, where he introduces himself and tells them that he and his men are tasked with eliminating the red pandas. He asks them for Mei's location, knowing that they're friends with her, acting civil at first. He reveals his true nature, however, as he yanks Miriam towards him and calls her out for lying to him. He leaves after Priya tells her too, not wanting to ruin his own reputation.
In his next scene, he uses his corrupted red panda spirits to knock down Mei and her friends before advancing on them. He shoots Miriam in the shoulder before telling them that he's making the city safe from the red pandas, and reveals he knows someone named Xia Lee. Before he can answer Mei's question regarding who Xia is, she is knocked out by Catherine Moore with her cane.
He is later seen interrogating Jin at the Lee family's house regarding Mei's location as Jin is tied to a chair. He assumes Jin is bluffing when the latter states he doesn't know where Mei is, but is informed by one of his agents that he isn't, as the agent saw Mei and Ming at the museum earlier that day, meaning Jin couldn't have known where they were.
He later confronts Mei's friends a second time at the school, telling them that he simply wants to ask for information. He takes them into an empty classroom, where he asks them for Mei's location a second time. When they refuse to tell him, however, he threatens Abby with a knife, forcing her to comply and tell her Mei's location. After he leaves them, he informs one of his agents (named simply as 'H') that Mei is hiding at Tyler's house.
After arriving at Tyler's house, he tells Tyler's dad that he and his men are looking for Mei, making up a story that she was responsible for many recent disappearances. He threatens to shoot Tyler's dad when he tells him that Mei had left the house, but leaves when his men tell him that they found no sign of her, while threatening to kill Tyler if he found out his dad was lying.
After Tyler's dad tells him Mei's at the school, Jason gets his men to confront her there. While he's at the school, he talks to one of his agents (Howard Mitchell, AKA "H"), who informs him they've found no sign of Mei at the school. Unbeknownst to either of them, however, Mei is hiding in one of the classrooms. However, he manages to spot Mei's location after he sees Xia walk out of the classroom, and asks Mei where she went, which Mei refuses to answer as she knows he wants them both killed. He decides to leave the classroom after deciding not to kill Mei as he didn't want to damage his reputation.
A few hours later, he breaks into the Lee family house while they're enjoying their dinner, and threatens them, hoping one of them would reveal Mei's location. After his agents find no sign of her, he starts to leave the house but goes back to the table and captures Mei, who accidentally reveals her own location. He takes Mei to the Museum and down a hidden elevator, which takes them down to the museum's storage room. He then leads Mei over to a hidden part of the room where a freight train is waiting and locks Mei in one of the containers.
During the train journey, he hears Xia and Howard fighting on top and climbs out of his carriage onto the roof of the train, running up to confront Xia while Howard deals with Mei, who had just gotten free and regained her panda spirit. He fights against Xia and proves himself a skilled fighter as he manages to gain the upper hand against her (who was in her red panda form at the time). He gets off the train once it arrives at its destination (a container yard in Ottawa) and orders the containers to be unloaded onto trucks before heading off, not knowing Mei and Xia are following them.
He then arrives at a warehouse, where he reveals that he's planning on selling the red pandas rather than kill them, and that the deaths of the pandas were faked by himself. He is confronted by Xia and Mei, who expose him for his crimes, which enrages him as he sends out dozens of corrupted panda spirits to attack the place, killing several innocent people (including his own men) in the process, while also engaged in a duel with Xia.
As Mei and Xia manage to escape the chaos, he follows them outside, leading to a car chase from Ottawa Back to Toronto, but Xia and Mei manage to lose him behind some traffic.
He confronts the duo a second time after kidnapping Mei's friends and family, where he reveals his family past and how they made a deal with a demon to take down Sun Yee. While doing this, he tries to take down one of the giant red pandas, but is knocked to the ground by Xia before he could take a shot.
He fights against Mei and Xia in a blind rage, and tries to take both Mei and Xia down and tells them they won't take his victory and glory away from him. During the fight, he tries to charge at Xia and Mei, but they manage to dodge out of the way and make him crash through one of the windows, sending him falling to his death.
Personality[]
Jason is introduced as an honest, well-meaning man who genuinely wants to keep the city safe. However, his true personality often slips through, showing him to be a sadistic killer who will do whatever he wants to achieve his goals. He is also shown to be intolerant to failure, as shown when his auction goes awry due to Xia and Mei's interference, and also displays a power-hungry side (such as when he overthrew Mike Smith simply to take over the PCA). He is also quite prone to rage, as he often attacks others when things don't go his way, and also has a large dislike for the giant red pandas (Mei and her family) and tries to wipe them out, showing that he's also a complete xenophobe. He also has little care for others, as he doesn't get upset when Howard Mitchell is killed, and accuses his own of betraying him once his true nature is exposed, and also displays little care that people are being killed during the auction. The auction also shows that he cares more about the profit than anything else, as he tries to sell the red pandas off for money.
Powers and Abilities[]
Magic: He is shown to be able to command and control corrupted red panda spirits, which act as enforcers to him.
Fighting skill: He is quite a skilled fighter, able to fight against the giant red pandas alone despite being not having the same strength as them, relying instead on his own agility
Marksmanship: He is fairly good with a gun, as shown when he tries shooting at Mei, her friends, and her family at multiple points in the movie.
Driving: During the chase, he displays some impressive driving skills, such as pulling a 180-degree drift turn to face Xia after he overtakes her and avoiding oncoming traffic while driving in reverse without looking back behind him.
Manipulation: He is a master manipulator, able to convince others to reveal the locations of the giant red pandas. He even manages to manipulate the government so that he can overthrow Mike Smith.
Trivia[]
- The vehicle he uses is based heavily on a Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Black Series.
- Jason bears similarities to both Harold Attinger from Transformers: Age of Extinction, and Eli Mills from Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. The former due to trying to wipe out the red pandas (similar to how Attinger wants to wipe out the Transformers), and the latter for trying to sell off the red pandas as weapons at an illegal auction (much like how Mills does the dinosaurs). Also, like Attinger, he is the corrupt commander of a black-ops government organisation.
